1
Our fourth finalist is Cassie Hilditch from the Centre for Sleep Research in the School of Psychology Social Work and Social Policy.
2
Her presentation is entitled Waking Up Tired: effects of a nighttime nap on performance and alertness.
3
Thank you, Cassie.
4
Thank you.
5
I want you all to think about how you felt when you first woke up this morning.
6
Did you wake up feeling tired?
7
A little groggy or disoriented, like you needed a strong coffee, a hot shower, and about 30 minutes to start thinking straight?
8
Well, this is what we call sleep inertia.
9
It's when the momentum of sleep continues into wakefulness.
10
And it's during this period that our ability to process information is impaired.
11
So for most of us this occurs while we're shuffling around the house getting ready for work or school.
12
So what's the problem?
13
Well, consider shift workers people who work on call, People who nap on shift, People like emergency service workers, pilots, and doctors.
14
These people may have to make life -changing decisions.
15
problem -solve time -critical situations or simply drive a vehicle soon after waking.
16
And it's in these scenarios that sleep inertia can be a significant safety risk.
17
Now, the current guidelines for napping on shift say that you can sleep for up to half an hour.
18
This way you won't go into a deep sleep and you'll avoid sleep inertia.
19
but this advice is based on studies conducted in the afternoon.
20
and we don't really know what might happen after a half
21
an hour nap at night say at 4 :00 a .m when we're most sleepy.
22
So what did we do?
23
Well, we took 21 healthy adult subjects and confined them to the sleep laboratory for one night.
24
and deprived them of sleep to simulate a night shift.
25
We gave one group a 30 minute nap ending at 4 :00 a .m.
26
and the other group were kept awake for the whole night.
27
We then tested the performance of both groups at 4 :00 a .m and again every 15 minutes for the next hour.
28
And what did we find?
29
Well, our research showed that performance after the nap was significantly worse than before the nap.
30
and worse than the control group who had had no nap at all.
31
and this performance impairment continued for up to half an hour after the nap.
32
And interestingly, When we ask people to rate how they felt they had performed, They said they performed better after the nap.
33
That is? they were completely unaware of the impact that sleep inertia had had on their performance. So what's the message?
34
Well, this research is informing and challenging current fatigue risk management guidelines for napping on shift.
35
We now know that if you take a 30 minute nap ending at 4am, then you should include an additional 30 minute buffer zone before returning to safety critical duties.
36
We also need to educate workers about the risks of overestimating their performance during this period.
37
Our future research will look at shorter naps to see whether they can provide immediate performance benefits
38
without the side effects of waking up tired.
39
Thank you.

예를 들어, "what did we do?"는 [wɑːt dɪd wi duː]가 아니라 [wɑːt dɪd wi duː]로 연결되어 발음되며, "that is"는 [ðæt ɪz]가 아니라 [ðætɪz]로 축약됩니다.

예를 들어, "Our research showed that performance after the nap was significantly worse than before the nap."에서 "performance after the nap was significantly worse" 부분이 강조되며, 음조가 높아졌다가 낮아집니다.
