Shadowing Practice: 20 Cheat Codes I Wish I Knew at 20 - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
Here's what nobody tells you.
2
The girls with the life you want are not smarter than you and they're not luckier either.
3
They just found a few cheat codes early and started using them sooner rather than later.
4
So here are my 20 cheat codes that helped me get my dream life that will change your life too.
5
Shared while I take you through my first Coachella.
6
Let's go!
7
Lesson one, later is not guaranteed but you know what is?
8
Right now and that's why I have a really strong bias toward action.
9
When these Coachella tickets came up and I saw that Katzai was going to be there, I knew I wanted to go.
10
So I didn't just sit there dwelling on it for days.
11
I remembered that money comes back, but time doesn't.
12
And the more time I spend thinking about it is also time wasted.
13
And especially under 30, there's not really much you can lose.
14
I know you'd be procrastinating all the time, but whatever you need to do or want to do, there's no better time than the present
15
because you may not have tomorrow first stop walmart grocery lesson
16
number two maximize your happiness happiness isn't a reward you earn at the end
17
and my husband sean once told me
18
that he loves how happy i am about everything by default like one time we got caught in the rain
19
and i just started singing rain rain go away come again another day
20
and i feel like most people nowadays
21
feel like they have to think their way into being happy
22
or they have to earn somehow but the way
23
that i found to live a really successful life is
24
because i just don't think about it and i really prioritize my happiness.
25
I don't let myself feel uncomfortable for too long.
26
And that's also why I quit my consulting job after 18 months.
27
And jumped into a passion that I'm happier about
28
and therefore going to be better at and more driven in and thus now also more successful in.
29
Lesson number three, weigh both fears
30
when you're scared to do something you're only weighing the fear of doing it
31
but there's a second fear that almost nobody counts and
32
that is the fear of regret
33
when the fear of your regret is greater than the fear of doing the thing I do the thing
34
and that is how I was willing to start talking to Sean who is now my husband
35
that is how I was willing to start a personal brand
36
and put my face on the internet which is really scary
37
but now I literally get to have dream opportunities I live in the coolest city in the world
38
and I have the coolest friends
39
lesson number four don't wait for everyone to agree when i said
40
that i wanted to be a youtuber a girl i worked with told me in this very dubious voice
41
that i probably won't make it you just have to be really lucky
42
but two years later i had a following
43
and now she's making content too it's just like school 10 years later everyone agrees
44
that they should have worked harder
45
but at the time nobody did do what you believe in
46
because you don't want your unique potential to be held back by peer pressure.
47
Top sign was 10 out of 10.
48
10 out of 10.
49
Beautiful.
50
Lesson number five, being a girl is actually a superpower.
51
I used to scoff at posts about loving being a woman and in the name of efficiency, I wore sweatpants every single day.
52
But then after a while, I realized I didn't feel so good about myself.
53
And then I started to learn makeup.
54
I wore pink for the very first time and it surprisingly just made me very happy.
55
And I discovered maybe that's the magic of being a woman.
56
We're finally back.
57
That we can change our own mood just by putting on an outfit or trying something new with our look.
58
It's difficult sometimes in this society where if you're too pretty, people might think you're dumb and if you're smart, people might not expect that you should care about fashion.
59
But I think that we can be anything we want to be and happiness is proof enough that it's worth our time.
60
Lesson number six, be selfish.
61
Everyone says that to improve yourself and take on new habits, you have to take on a new identity first.
62
Tell yourself you're disciplined before you have any proof.
63
But I disagree.
64
Your identity changes from your actions, not the other way around.
65
My dad taught me to just choose actions that are good for me.
66
When you do that and you put yourself first, then you automatically do stuff that would be considered disciplined.
67
And then you get to call yourself disciplined because you have actual proof.
68
Oh, the cardio has messed up my sweat gland.
69
I literally sweat so easily.
70
Oh my gosh, today is so much hotter than yesterday.
71
Yesterday was peak though.
72
I don't know how we're gonna top that, but we don't need to because every day is different.
73
I'm so grateful I got my most uncomfortable outfit out of the way though because my feet could not survive another day.
74
And I'm just really excited to do more like girly things.
75
Lesson seven, your calendar is your real values list.
76
People always say they value things, but their actions aren't in alignment with what they say.
77
Comment if that sounds like you.
78
And that gap is where the discontent comes from.
79
So if health is at the very top of your list and there's no workout scheduled, and you're weak, then you need to put one in or let yourself off the hook.
80
Either way, the discontent goes away.
81
First time doing hair like this and it worked.
82
I forgot to vlog for a hot sec.
83
Basically, just took the front piece and then started braiding from the back.
84
And I think pieces will fall out more as this gets looser.
85
I threaded it through a rubber band and then tied it into a bow so it would stay.
86
So it wouldn't slip off
87
and I put in some gold hair rings put on my tinted sunscreen it's like a filter oh my gosh
88
and added some accessories thinking of adding my gold necklace stack from yesterday see
89
if it's too much though yay i like it i think it adds a little bit of sparkle
90
and i'm actually
91
so proud of myself most for making all my outfits out of things i already have
92
which means either that i have a lot of clothes or
93
that means i'm decent at fashion because it's all in the styling
94
and pairing things together
95
and i forgot how much joy i have from this in
96
high school i would literally plan my outfits day by day right out the combination of hair
97
and accessories and clothes and shoes
98
and for me now i just think getting ready is like something
99
that happens before the actual thing
100
but i don't know maybe just being a girl means you got to do what makes you happy
101
and this truly makes me happy and so
102
i guess i'll just do more of it yay i put
103
on some sparkles on top of the non -toxic nail polish i got the other day
104
so okay i'm gonna i need to do my makeup now
105
oh my gosh oh my gosh i've improved in makeup
106
so much okay so i did tightline today um usual glitter eyeliner the goldish highlight
107
and oh my gosh i'm
108
so proud of the eyeshadow i never do eyeshadow like this
109
i usually just do one single color i created dimension today
110
i feel like they should teach makeup in school like what whoa shoot lesson eight do one good thing today
111
when i'm in a rut i make myself do one small good thing anyway
112
and every single time it shifts the whole momentum of the day
113
and kicks off what is called the winner's effect in college
114
i was a bench warmer on the basketball team i got put in
115
while we were losing threw up a far three -pointer
116
and it banked in because i made
117
that one shot everyone cheered the whole vibe became positive
118
and we came back and won
119
that game one winning moment turns your whole attitude around okay
120
so let's let's walk through what coachella is like right we
121
got the ferris wheel here this is a health hazard simply not having our masks on right now
122
but it's okay and we got the the rainbow tower apparently you can go in it
123
And now we got our friends there.
124
Yeah, right there, right there.
125
She's still taking photos.
126
Going strong.
127
She's got higher endurance than us.
128
Lesson nine, don't consume experience.
129
You watch a 30 second video, you scroll on by, but that is 30 seconds of your life you scrolled away.
130
You didn't pause that time, you deleted it.
131
So the test isn't whether you were productive, it's whether you will actually remember that time.
132
That's why I almost only watch shows or movies with other people to turn
133
that into a bonding experience
134
and that's why going to a concert set with your besties is something you'll still talk about in five years.
135
Lesson 10, talk to strangers.
136
I sent a LinkedIn message to a YouTuber I admired.
137
Then that YouTuber introduced me to another creator who became one of my best friends
138
and I'm so grateful I've gotten into the habit of just shooting my shot
139
because there's really nothing to lose but everything to gain
140
and the prospect of not gaining all those cool opportunities
141
or those new friendships or that new knowledge that is the scarier thing which ties back to that earlier lesson.
142
I have learned so many helpful things I didn't know I didn't know.
143
Every person you meet is a doorway and the only way in is the first message.
144
Lesson 11.
145
Confidence is not needing the outcome.
146
Three people in one week told me I speak well
147
and that's crazy because I used to be so shy but
148
when they told me that I realized it actually has nothing to do with speaking.
149
It's that I stopped needing anything from the room and I stopped feeling that pressure of doing it well.
150
Maybe I would like to impress people, but I don't need it and where I am right now is fine.
151
So that contentness is what gives off a peaceful, confident aura.
152
Because I don't feel desperate or nervous, that is when I speak better.
153
Lesson 12, who I am, not who am I.
154
My mantra is who I am.
155
In this world of ever -changing trends and influences online, it's really important to feel a passionate pride in who you are
156
and your likes and your interests because without that you have no identity.
157
I am already a certain way and I stick by what I believe in.
158
That's how I center myself when I see what other people have online.
159
Just because I see it doesn't mean I want it.
160
You can't have everything anyway so the beauty is getting to pick.
161
Lesson 13.
162
Care the most about your own success.
163
You should be the person who cares the most about yourself.
164
Not me, not your parents should be the ones telling you that your future matters.
165
My parents didn't push me and I still went after things on my own
166
and that's what makes it much more effective and joyful anyway.
167
Your parents are the closest anyone gets to caring genuinely about your success
168
and you want to care more than even they do.
169
Lesson 14.
170
Yes compounds into luck.
171
Did I ever dream of being on a billboard in Times Square?
172
Absolutely not, but it happened.
173
That wasn't a goal I set, but it was years of putting myself out there
174
and it just looks like a stroke of luck
175
But I was ready for it
176
when it came lesson 15 every small move counts on my channel I've already talked about the butterfly effect
177
Which is that a little change in the past dramatically affects the present
178
Which is why you should focus on all your little habits right now
179
But let me give a real example from this coachella experience right after the justin bieber set the crowd was is insane.
180
I've never seen a sea of that many people in my life and it was barely moving.
181
It was 1 30 a .m and the last shuttle left at 2
182
so my friends and I were super stressed but we tried our absolute best.
183
We inched little by little to the edge and we even jumped over a barricade.
184
All of the little actions and snaking through the crowd made us be able to catch the very last shuttle.
185
We were literally the last people out of everyone who got to leave
186
and the next time the buses would come back would be like 4am.
187
Crazy experience, but just more proof that every little action you take truly adds up.
188
Lesson 16.
189
Quitting can be the power move.
190
Leaving something prestigious may feel like betrayal, so we stay in things because we already put the time in.
191
Hence the sunk cost fallacy.
192
But Alyssa Liu walked away from a figure skating at 16, even when she was at the top, then came back on her own terms and won the world championships and Olympic gold.
193
I left consulting in 2023, and I built this channel instead, which led to my dream life.
194
Today's is my favorite outfit, actually.
195
It's not just because comfy, but I feel like this is just my style.
196
I love this style.
197
I don't know what it is.
198
Sporty, kind of street wear -ish.
199
Now, I'm just going to add in some silver hair loops.
200
Hopefully, it's not too much
201
because I already have silver rings oh my gosh that's wild okay we got one side yo this looks sick
202
oh my gosh i love it lesson 17 i can is not i want for years i thought
203
that being an engineer was what i wanted i was good at it
204
and i went to caltech and being good at something felt like the answer
205
but being able to carry something is not a reason to keep carrying it i proved i can
206
and now i can use those same analytical
207
and problem solving skills into the things i want to comment down below
208
which look of the three
209
that i should do regularly in one of my videos lesson 18 judge your path as
210
if the exit didn't exist in 2024 when youtube felt real hard a friend startup with real packing wanted me.
211
And I almost said yes and quit YouTube for good.
212
Then I admitted to myself that the pull was fear, not interest.
213
I said no and a big relief washed over me.
214
So when a door opens on a hard day, ask if you'd still want to leave without it.
215
Lesson 19.
216
Decide what rich means to you.
217
Most people never ask what rich actually means to them.
218
Not the influencer version, but yours.
219
For me, it's two things.
220
It's my health and the time to take care of it.
221
And it's having the people I love around me.
222
Everything else is secondary.
223
When you pick a couple of things that matter, you stop trying to afford everything because you can't have everything anyway.
224
And doesn't that give better peace of mind?
225
Lesson number 20.
226
You can't have a good life if it's not yours.
227
The people with the life you want just found these cheat codes earlier, but none of it works if the life isn't yours.
228
Why am I so happy?
229
Because I stay strong to what I want.
230
Most people never stop to ask why they want what they want.
231
You can't have a good life if it's not yours.
232
Bye bye Coachella.
233
I think it's so fun.
234
I think it's like this is a dream come true.
235
It made me feel very alive.
236
I did feel very alive.
237
Super visceral.
238
I did feel alive.
239
I think it's a great balance of like music.
240
Like we saw six people we really like in the full sets of them too
241
and we got actually pretty good like views for all of
242

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "20 Cheat Codes I Wish I Knew at 20" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
