1
Hi, welcome to Slow English with Brian.
2
I'm Brian.
3
In this video, we are going to talk about daily routines.
4
When I teach English, many students ask me, what is a routine?
5
And what is a daily routine?
6
I tell them that a daily routine is something that we do every day or almost every day.
7
In my life, I have a routine where I wake up at 7.30 a.m every day
8
and cycle on a cycling machine for one hour.
9
I do that every day.
10
So that is a routine that I have.
11
After I finish cycling, I go to the gym six days per week.
12
It is almost a daily routine, but I don't go on one day.
13
So it's not a daily routine.
14
It's just a routine that I do a lot.
15
Usually I exercise at the gym for 45 minutes.
16
Then I go home.
17
All of that exercising, the cycling and the gym, is my morning routine.
18
What do you do every morning or almost every morning?
19
Tell me in the comments what your morning routine is.
20
I read every comment.
21
After I finish exercising, I come home and my wife and I eat lunch together.
22
I am a very lucky man because she is very good at cooking.
23
Then, we spend time with our daughter.
24
And we do that until about 1 or 2 p.m.
25
Then, we spend time with our daughter and we do that until about 1 or 2 p.m.
26
Then we take a nap every day.
27
In America where I grew up people didn't take naps very much
28
but here in Vietnam people like to take naps and I like it too.
29
That is my routine around noon or it is my early afternoon routine.
30
Please tell me your early afternoon routine in the comments.
31
In the later afternoon, my wife and I teach English together.
32
We usually finish teaching English at about 8 to 9 p.m.
33
Then we have dinner, get ready for bed, and go to sleep.
34
That is my evening routine.
35
Please tell me your evening routine in the comments.
36
Before I end this video,
37
let's talk about how to pronounce the word routine.
38
Some students let their tongue move a lot when they say er.
39
So, instead of saying routine, they say routine.
40
In English, especially American English like mine, we don't have the rrr sound.
41
So, when you say routine, do this with your tongue.
42
Take your tongue and move it up and back.
43
Rrr, rrr, rrr, like that.
44
Routine.
45
It doesn't wiggle.
46
It just goes up and back.
47
Er, routine.
48
I look forward to seeing you in the next video.

Why practice speaking with this video?

In "My Daily Routine in English," Brian provides an engaging platform for English speaking practice. This video is specifically designed for beginners, offering slow and clear speech that helps learners grasp new vocabulary and sentence structures effectively. Speaking practice through such videos is essential as it enhances listening comprehension while allowing learners to mimic and internalize proper pronunciation and intonation. By engaging with Brian's routine, you can relate the content to your daily life, making language learning both practical and relevant. Utilizing the shadowspeaks technique—where you repeat phrases while listening—can further cement your understanding and fluency as you practice.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, several key structures emerge that can greatly benefit learners:

  • Daily Routine Descriptions: Brian's use of phrases such as "I wake up at 7:30 a.m." and "I go to the gym six days per week" provides a clear model for how to express daily activities in the simple present tense. This structure is foundational in English and is frequently used to describe routines and habits.
  • Time Expressions: Phrases like "after I finish cycling" and "usually finish teaching" are excellent tools to incorporate into your own speaking, helping you sequence events in time and describe habitual actions.
  • Personalization: Brian asks viewers to share their routines, demonstrating how to invite conversation using phrases like "What do you do every morning?" This not only fosters interaction but also encourages learners to personalize their practice.

Common Pronunciation Traps

Pronunciation can be challenging, especially with words that have subtle differences in sound. One notable example from the video is the word routine. Many students may find themselves mispronouncing it as "rootine" instead of the correct "routine." To improve English pronunciation, Brian suggests practicing the movement of your tongue to achieve the correct sound. Focus on keeping the tongue up and back, which mirrors the American English pronunciation style. Additionally, practicing with a shadowing app can offer instant feedback and help refine your skills as you hear the correct pronunciation in context.

Incorporating these practices into your daily regimen can significantly enhance your ability to speak confidently and clearly in English. Watching and mimicking videos like Brian's not only aids in learning English with YouTube but also makes the process enjoyable and relatable. Make sure to practice consistently, and don't hesitate to share your progress!

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
