1
Two short stories.
2
Never swim too far out to sea.
3
Two days ago, I decided to walk to the beach, so I put on my headphones and left the house.
4
I was walking happily and I was listening to my favourite music.
5
It was a perfect day for the beach.
6
The sun was shining and the birds were singing in the sky.
7
But while I was walking down to the sea, I hit my foot on a big rock and then I fell over and hurt my knee.
8
Some people came to help me and I thanked them for their help.
9
Then I decided to swim and I took off my headphones and put them in my bag.
10
And then I jumped into the water.
11
The water was nice and cool.
12
But while I was swimming happily, I saw a grey shark next to me.
13
I thought he wanted to eat me.
14
I screamed for help but no one heard me so I quickly started swimming back to the shore.
15
When I finally reached the shore again I felt much better.
16
I wasn't scared anymore.
17
I was safe.
18
After that I decided never to swim so far out ever again. Who ate my chicken?
19
Last week, I decided to invite some friends to my house for dinner.
20
I bought lots of delicious food, including some very tasty roast chicken.
21
At about 5 o'clock, I started to cook the dinner.
22
I was really very happy that day because I was cooking in the kitchen.
23
The sun was shining and it was a hot afternoon
24
so i opened the back door for some fresh air suddenly the telephone rang
25
and i went to answer it but when i came back to the kitchen the roast chicken wasn't on the stove anymore
26
i felt very upset where was my roast chicken i looked out of the window and saw that a big cat
27
was sitting on my garden wall
28
and it was eating my chicken the cat had a hungry
29
look in its greedy little eyes i got very mad
30
so i filled a pot with water
31
and i went quietly outside the cat wasn't looking in my direction
32
because it was eating the chicken
33
so hungrily it didn't hear me coming outside i was walking slowly
34
because i wanted to surprise the cat and empty the water over its head
35
it was a mean idea but the chicken was very expensive and the cat took it from me I was walking quietly,
36
but at the last moment the cat heard me and escaped.
37
It ran away and I never saw it again after that.
38
After this I learnt my lesson and I always kept my kitchen doors and windows closed.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "Short Stories using Past Simple vs Past Continuous" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
