Hello and welcome.
2
I am Barrett Longhart, owner of Body Mechanics Orthopedic Massage here in New York City.
3
One of the questions that we get asked a lot is can I talk to my massage therapist before the session?
4
And the answer is a resounding yes.
5
But that consultation is built into the beginning of your massage appointment.
6
What follows is an example of some of the questions that your massage therapist might ask when you book your appointment.
7
It's really important to understand that your consultation might be a little longer or a little shorter than this example.
8
It also might include some physical assessment as well as some movement
9
so that we know that we're on the right track when building our treatment for you.
10
We hope that this video answers some of your questions all right
11
so thank you for coming in i'm going to be your therapist today i was hoping
12
that you could give me a little bit of an idea of what brought you in today okay
13
so my neck has been hurting oh i'm so sorry to hear
14
that how long has that been going on for it started i think it's been years ago
15
but it got worse like i don't know like maybe two months ago oh interesting
16
that sounds like a really long time is it up go up
17
and down or like is there any pattern
18
that you can find to it i can't really figure it out
19
and it's starting to worry me a little bit okay i mean
20
that is naturally to be worried about your pain can you
21
tell me a little bit about the time period where it got worse was anything going on in your life
22
or was there an event that precipitated
23
that yeah it happened i noticed it like a few days after i was working out
24
but i work out a lot so i wasn't really sure
25
if that was it or like i don't know did i sleep funny
26
and you know in the past i had I had noticed some stuff and like,
27
you know, I didn't really know,
28
cause in the past it's also gone like,
29
I felt like there was something pulling in like my chest and like,
30
I didn't know if that was something and, but that went away.
31
And now this neck thing's been going on.
32
And I don't know, is my chest too tight?
33
It can be really hard to figure out.
34
That's actually the purpose of this interview.
35
So we're off to a really good start.
36
Let me just dial it back a few steps.
37
You keep touching your neck when you're doing that or your chest
38
when you're doing that is that the area of the pain
39
or is it primarily more neck
40
or is it shoulder I mean like it's I guess it hurts the most like over here
41
so more in the sort of back posterior area okay perfect
42
and then when it got bad what was the pain level would you say
43
when when the pain changed for you I was pretty sharp oh interesting Okay,
44
so, and are there any other feelings that go with that?
45
Like, what do you mean?
46
Are there, would you describe it,
47
as you mentioned before, like,
48
it was like a pulling sensation.
49
So, if there are words that you could use to describe the kind of pain you're having for me,
50
it can be very helpful for me to understand then what's happening in your body.
51
So like I didn't feel the chest thing this time,
52
but this time it was definitely sharp.
53
It didn't really feel like,
54
I guess it felt tight too,
55
but the tightness was more like, I guess lower.
56
Lower.
57
Okay.
58
And would you describe the onset as like a sudden onset or did it kind of come in slowly and creep in?
59
I noticed that my back was getting tight for like maybe a week or so before it happened.
60
But then just sort of out of the blue after I woke up one day,
61
it was there.
62
Okay.
63
And does the pain travel at all?
64
What do you mean?
65
Does it?
66
So you said that you primarily,
67
it's like in the back of the neck,
68
sort of in this area in the front.
69
Yeah.
70
Does it ever move around to other places?
71
Does it go down the arm or up into the head?
72
No. Okay, that's good news.
73
Sometimes when we see pain traveling,
74
it can mean that there's some more complications happening,
75
but it doesn't sound like you have any of those today.
76
So I'm happy to hear that.
77
When we're talking about the pain,
78
it started out at one place and it went to another place.
79
When it first started, what would you say that was on a scale of one to ten?
80
Ten being the highest.
81
I'd say maybe like a five.
82
Okay.
83
And then when it got worse, what was that?
84
I think maybe like at its worst, maybe like a seven.
85
Okay.
86
And where are you today?
87
It is starting to get a little bit better.
88
So I would say like a four.
89
Oh, excellent.
90
That's great.
91
On that note of getting a little bit better,
92
I want to ask you some questions about like behavioral things.
93
Are there things that you're doing that are working to make it a little bit better for yourself?
94
Yeah.
95
So sometimes I'll take a ball
96
and I'll like just kind of go against the wall
97
and I'll kind of push on some of those areas in my back,
98
you know, like, especially before I work out,
99
you know, I foam roll.
100
And that seems to help,
101
but it only lasts for like,
102
I don't know, like a few hours.
103
So it's hoping that like,
104
if somebody who really knew what they were doing could get in there,
105
they could like dig out whatever's going on there.
106
Possibly.
107
And I'm glad to hear that you have some ability to control it a little bit.
108
Having small things you can do throughout your day to make yourself feel better
109
when you're having pain can be really helpful in decreasing your anxiety
110
and it's a really good step towards making good choices for yourself i'm glad to hear
111
that massage is working for you um on
112
that have you ever had massage before yeah and
113
when you have it what kind of massage do you typically
114
like i like pretty deep pressure pretty deep pressure okay we we will take
115
that into consideration today we'll be choosing the pressure that's most appropriate for you
116
and i'll be encouraging you to give me some feedback about what it feels like to you in the session
117
so that we can kind of walk the balance between what is good and what will work for you.
118
Is there anything that you have been doing that makes it worse?
119
I'm not really sure.
120
I sometimes think because it's really just on this side,
121
I sometimes wonder like, am I doing something in my sleep that's aggravating it?
122
Are you sleeping well?
123
I sleep okay.
124
Okay, that's fine.
125
It is possible to irritate things when you sleep.
126
Obviously, you wouldn't know about it.
127
But, you know, as long as you're moving and getting good sleep,
128
that's really important to your pain as well.
129
Is there anything else that you can tell me that might relate to this in any way?
130
Sometimes knowing what types of exercises
131
that you're doing can be helpful to knowing what sets it off and what makes it better.
132
I mean, the only thing I do wonder also,
133
because I wear a cross body bag.
134
Most of the time I put the strap on the shoulder and I do want,
135
I'm not sure like, is that like,
136
would it help to put it on this one?
137
Have you tried?
138
No. Okay.
139
It's something to try.
140
We won't really know until you do.
141
but modification of behavior is also a really good way to help try to solve problems
142
and even if it doesn't solve the problem it can inform us
143
and you can learn a little bit about what might be causing it even
144
if it doesn't change anything else no not really all right
145
so am i correct in assuming today
146
that your primary goal is pain reduction yeah yeah i really want to take care of whatever
147
that neck thing is okay and are you having any range of motion problems along with that I don't know.
148
I don't think so.
149
Okay.
150
Well, we can do a quick physical assessment after this to sort of confirm
151
that and let you know what's going on there.
152
So I just want to just sort of summarize what you're saying to me.
153
Right now, you're coming in for a massage
154
that is primarily focused about reduction in pain
155
because you had an event a little while ago that sort of triggered a increase in pain,
156
but it's recently gone down.
157
And your primary focus is sort of this neck,
158
chest back of neck area is that right yeah okay perfect
159
so the next step is going to be
160
that I'm just going to discuss with you your treatment options is that okay yeah

Shadowing

Shadowing?
