5
We're going to take a look at 10 phrasal verbs that have different meanings in both professional and everyday contexts.
6
These are great for improving your vocabulary so you can sound more natural in casual conversation,
7
but also confident using them in business situations.
8
Let's get into it.
9
English made easy with Claire.
10
If you're already familiar with this term phrasal verbs, it refers to when we have a combination of a verb
11
and a preposition or an adverb like give up or run into.
12
They often have multiple meanings, so depending on the context, they can mean different things.
13
As I said, the phrasal verbs we'll look at today have both professional meanings, so what they mean in the context of a workplace,
14
and everyday meanings, which we use in casual conversation.
15
So first up, we have take off.
16
In the professional world, take off refers to a business or a project that starts being successful.
17
For example, our new product really took off after the marketing campaign.
18
It means our product was very successful.
19
Take off can also refer to not working for a period of time.
20
For example, I'm going to take off Friday for my son's birthday.
21
It means I'm not coming to work on Friday.
22
In everyday speech, take off can mean to leave somewhere.
23
For example, I'm going to take off now.
24
See you later.
25
It means I'm going to leave now.
26
Another common use of this phrasal verb refers to when an airplane leaves the ground and goes into the air.
27
For example, the plane took off at 7 p.m.
28
So it means the plane left the ground, left the airport at 7 p.m.
29
Next up, we have break into.
30
In a professional setting, it means to enter a new market or industry.
31
For example, our company is planning to break into the European market next year.
32
In an everyday context, break into means to enter somewhere illegally.
33
For example, the burglars broke into the store and stole several items.
34
Number three, carry out.
35
In the workplace, carry out means to complete or execute a task or plan.
36
We need to carry out a survey to understand customer preferences.
37
So we need to do everything involved with making a survey and collecting the results.
38
In everyday conversations, carry out can be used more literally to mean physically taking something somewhere,
39
like carry out the trash.
40
Can you carry out the bags, please?
41
Number four, pull up.
42
Professionally, pull up is used in a technical sense.
43
To pull up data means to access it on a computer or device.
44
Or again, to pull up a report means to open it on your computer or device to have a look.
45
For example, give me a moment while I pull up the sales figures for this month.
46
You might say this in the context of accessing the sales figures on your computer after a co-worker
47
or your boss requested it.
48
In everyday conversations, pull up can mean stopping a car or vehicle.
49
She pulled up to the house and honked the horn.
50
So just with the simple use of the phrasal verb in this example, we know it means she stopped her car outside the house.
51
Next up, turn down.
52
In a professional setting, turn down can mean to reject or refuse something such as an offer or proposal.
53
So for example, I had to turn down the job offer because it didn't align with my goals.
54
In everyday speech, it can mean to lower the volume or the intensity of something like music or a noise.
55
For example, Could you turn down the music?
56
It's too loud.
57
Next up, we have work out.
58
In the professional world, work out can mean that something is successful or that a plan or solution is figured out.
59
For example, we're still working out the details of the agreement.
60
So we're still planning the details.
61
Or I'm so happy the deal worked out.
62
I'm happy it was successful.
63
In an everyday context, workout means to exercise or physically train.
64
For example, I'm going to the gym to work out after work.
65
Number seven, cut back on.
66
In a professional setting, cut back on means to reduce something like expenses, staff, or resources typically for financial or efficiency reasons.
67
So for example, we need to cut back on our marketing budget this quarter.
68
In everyday speech, to cut back on means to reduce the consumption or use of something,
69
especially something personal like food or habits.
70
For example, I've been trying to cut back on sugar to eat healthier.
71
Number eight, go through.
72
In the workplace, go through means to examine, review or analyze something carefully.
73
For example, I need to go through these reports before the meeting tomorrow.
74
I need to look at them and review them.
75
In everyday conversation, go through can also mean to experience or endure something,
76
like a difficult time or process.
77
She's been going through a tough time lately with her job.
78
Run into.
79
In a professional setting, run into can mean to encounter a problem or an unexpected situation.
80
For example, we ran into some issues with the new software rollout.
81
We experienced issues we weren't expecting.
82
The use of this phrasal verb in this context also softens the blow if it was a pretty big issue.
83
You might not want to admit to your boss, We had a lot of issues, but we ran into some issues.
84
Not expected, but we can solve them.
85
In everyday speech, run into usually means to unexpectedly meet someone.
86
For example, I ran into an old friend at the grocery store today.
87
Our final phrasal verb today, catch up.
88
In a professional context, catch up means to get up to speed on something you may have missed
89
or need to update yourself on.
90
For example, I need to catch up on the latest industry trends.
91
You can also catch someone up on something they missed.
92
So your boss might ask you, can you catch Rachel up on the new guidelines?
93
In everyday speech, catch up can simply mean to reconnect with someone or share recent updates.
94
