Test 1, Section 1.
2
You will hear a woman being interviewed by a market researcher in a health club, about her membership of the club.
3
First, you have some time to look at questions 1 to 5.
4
You will see that there is an example which has been done for you.
5
On this occasion only, the conversation relating to this will be played first.
6
Oh, excuse me.
7
I wonder if you'd have the time to take part in some market research?
8
Erm, what's it about?
9
About this club and your experiences and opinions about being a member.
10
It'll take less than five minutes.
11
Oh, OK then, as long as it's quick.
12
Can I start by taking your name?
13
It's Selena Thompson.
14
Is that T-H-O-M-P-S-O-N?
15
Yes.
16
Great.
17
Thanks.
18
The woman's name is Thompson, with a P.
19
So, Thompson has been written in the space.
20
Now we shall begin.
21
You should answer the questions as you listen, because you will not hear the recording a second time.
22
Listen carefully and answer questions one to five.
23
Excuse me, I wonder if you'd have the time to take part in some market research.
24
Um, what's it about?
25
About this club and your experiences and opinions about being a member.
26
It'll take less than five minutes.
27
Oh, OK then, as long as it's quick.
28
Can I start by taking your name?
29
It's Selina Thompson.
30
Is that T-H-O-M-P-S-O-N?
31
Yes.
32
Great.
33
Thanks.
34
And what do you do for a living?
35
Well, I'm an accountant, but I'm between jobs at the moment.
36
I understand, but that's the job I'll put down on the form.
37
And would you mind my asking which age group you fall into?
38
Below 30, 31 to 50 and above?
39
Over 50, I think we can safely say.
40
Great, thanks.
41
And which type of membership do you have?
42
Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean.
43
Do you mean how long of...
44
No, is it a single person membership?
45
Oh right, no, it's a family membership.
46
Thanks.
47
And how long have you been a member?
48
Ooh, let me see.
49
I was certainly here five years ago, and it was probably two to three years more than that.
50
Shall I put down eight?
51
Oh, I remember now.
52
It's nine, definitely.
53
Sorry.
54
No problem.
55
I've got that.
56
And the last question in this first part is, what brought you to the club?
57
Sorry?
58
How did you find out about the club?
59
Did you see any ads?
60
Well, I did actually, but I have to say I wasn't really attracted to the club because of that.
61
It was through word of mouth.
62
So you were recommended by a friend?
63
Actually, my doctor.
64
I'd been suffering from high blood pressure and he said the club was very supportive of people with that condition, so I signed up.
65
Great, thanks.
66
Before you hear the rest of the conversation, you have some time to look at questions 6 to 10.
67
Now listen and answer questions 6 to 10.
68
Now, for the second part of the form, I want to ask a bit more about your experience of the club.
69
Sure.
70
How often would you say you use the club?
71
It varies enormously, depending on how busy I am. Of course.
72
But on average per month?
73
I'd say it averages out at twice a week.
74
OK, so eight on average.
75
Yeah, and four of those are aqua aerobics classes.
76
That leads me to the next question.
77
Would you say the swimming pool is the facility you make most use of?
78
Fair to say that, yep.
79
Right, thanks.
80
And are there any facilities you don't use?
81
One area I realise I've never used is the tennis courts, and there's one simple reason for that.
82
You don't play tennis?
83
Actually, I'm not bad at it.
84
It's that I'm not happy having to pay extra for that privilege.
85
Right, I've made a note of that.
86
Thanks.
87
Now, in the last section, are there any suggestions or recommendations you have for improvements to the club?
88
Only about health and fitness?
89
Anything at all.
90
Well, I'd like to see more social events.
91
It isn't just a question of getting together for games or classes, but other things, you know.
92
Yes, sure.
93
And another thing that I was thinking, when I had my yoga class in the gym last night, we were all sweltering in the heat,
94
was that I think they should put in, well, you know...
95
Air conditioning.
96
That's exactly what I mean.
97
The rooms are really light and well designed, but they do need proper installations.
98
Sure.
99
Well, I've made a note of that.
100
Good.
101
So, is there anything else you'd like to suggest?
102
About quality of service, for example?
103
Oh, everyone's very nice here.
104
They couldn't be more friendly and helpful.
105
Oh, but I tell you what, it's a shame the restaurant isn't open in the evening on Saturday, and Sunday as well for that matter.
106
So the club should… Open it later on those days.
107
OK, well thank you very much.
108
That's all the questions I have.
109
That is the end of section one.
110
You now have half a minute to check your answers.
111
Test one, section two.
112
You will hear a trainer giving a talk to people who want to learn outdoor survival skills.
113
First, you have some time to look at questions 11 to 16.
114
Now listen and answer questions 11 to 16.
115
Good morning everyone and welcome to our outdoor survival program.
116
As you know, This week you'll be learning some of the basic information
117
and skills you need to look after yourself independently in the outdoors.
118
These first two days will be based here in the classroom,
119
and then we'll be taking a camping trip to put into practice some of the things you've learned.
120
I'm going to start off with the topic of food.
121
And to start with, I'll describe just two methods
122
which we'll be putting into practice at our camp and which make use of natural resources,
123
the steam pit and the bamboo pot.
124
I've got two posters here to make things clearer, and I'll start with the steam pit here.
125
To make this, you'll need some dry sticks, some grass, some loose earth, and some stones.
126
And for this week only, some matches!
127
The first thing you do is to dig a shallow pit in the place you've chosen to do your cooking.
128
Let's say about 25 centimeters deep and 30 centimeters wide.
129
Your sticks have to be a bit wider than the pit
130
because you have to put a line of them along the top from one end of the pit to the other.
131
Before setting light to these, you take some large stones and arrange them on top.
132
Then you start the fire and wait till the wooden platform burns through and the stones fall into the pit.
133
At this point, brush away any pieces of hot ash from the stones.
134
You can use a handful of grass and then take another stick
135
and push it down into the center of the pit between the stones.
136
After that, you cover the whole pit with a thick layer of grass.
137
And then you can put your food on it, wrapped in more pieces of grass, like parcels.
138
Finally, cover the whole thing with earth.
139
You have to pat it firmly to seal the pit.
140
Then all you have to do is take the stick out
141
and pour a bit of water into the opening that it leaves.
142
It should take about four hours for your food to cook
143
as it cooks slowly in the steam that's created inside the pit.
144
Now you have some time to look at questions 17 to 20.
145
Now listen and answer questions 17 to 20. So, simple but effective.
146
The other method you're going to practice this week is the bamboo oven.
147
Now, the steam pit is ideal in certain conditions because the heat is below ground level.
148
For example, if there's a strong wind and you're afraid a fire might spread.
149
But when it's safe to have an open fire, you can use the bamboo oven method.
150
You get a length of bamboo, which as you probably know is hollow, and consists of a number of individual sections with a wall in between.
151
You use a sharp stick to make a hole in each of the dividing walls apart from the end one.
152
Then you lean the bamboo over a fire with the top propped up by a forked stick
153
and the bottom sitting on the ground.
154
You pour enough water in the top to fill the bottom section
155
and then light a fire underneath that section to heat the water.
156
Then you put your food inside the top section
157
and the steam coming up the bamboo through the holes you made cooks it.
158
I'm going to move on now to food itself and talk about some of the wild plants you might cook.
159
I'm going to begin with fungi.
160
That's mushrooms and toads.
161
I'm sure you'll be aware that some of these are edible and they're delicious but some of them are highly poisonous.
162
Now, whether they're poisonous or not, all fungi that you find in the wild should be cooked before eating
163
because that helps to destroy any compounds in them that might be mildly toxic.
164
But be aware that any amount of cooking won't make poisonous varieties any safer to eat.
165
Unless you can definitely identify a fungus, you should never eat it.
166
It's not worth the risk.
167
And you need to be really sure, because some fungi that are poisonous are very similar in appearance to certain edible varieties.
168
They can easily be mistaken for each other.
169
So, having said all that, fungi are delicious when they're freshly picked, and although they are only moderately nutritious,
170
they do contain minerals which the body needs.
171
I'll move on now to leafy plants, which are generally...
172
That is the end of Section 2.
173
You now have half a minute to check your answers.
