1
Well when you are interviewing for a job,
2
first of all always tell the truth.
3
Second, don't say I love the theatre because you happen to know that whoever is interviewing you loves the theatre.
4
Unless you really do and you can give an example.
5
Don't go on an interview unprepared.
6
Be on time and be yourself.
7
Somebody showed me a video recently,
8
I think was on the cut,
9
where they interviewed 10 young women who were interviewed by me
10
and how much care they had put into what they were going to wear for the interview process.
11
And to be honest, I don't ever really notice what people are wearing when I'm in an interview with them.
12
I'm much more interested in finding out what they've read,
13
the movies they're interested in,
14
why they want to be at Vogue or another title within the company.
15
I'm much more interested in finding out more deeply who they are than anything that they have put on that morning.
16
I mean I certainly will notice it but it's not something that I focus on.
17
So I think when you're coming in for an interview with whoever it might be,
18
much more important to be clear in your replies,
19
to be honest in your replies,
20
don't pretend that you're somebody that you're not.
21
I can't tell you how many people have told me they love tennis
22
and they've obviously never been to a tennis match in their life than to be concerned about surface appearances.
23
You need to be direct,
24
you need to be honest,
25
and you need to be very clear about what it is
26
you want to do with your life as much as you can answer the questions that are asked.
27
a creative eye or developing taste.
28
I think that's something that you have within you from a very early age,
29
but it is also something that you can develop through exposure to culture,
30
to the arts, through reading,
31
visiting museums, looking at what's going on in the world around you.
32
I think that there are so many ways to tap into creativity
33
and particularly in today's world when information is so readily available,
34
there are many ways to grow one's eye and to expand one's creative vision.
35
I also think it's very important not to spend the time glued to your phone or glued to your computer.
36
There is nothing as rewarding as seeing something in person.
37
Creative exposure, cultural exposure, I think,
38
is so important to spend as much time on that as you possibly can.
39
And of course, it comes with maturity and it comes with time.
40
It's, when you look back at early collections,
41
for an instance, there may be a kernel of what a designer may have become or a writer may have become.
42
But it isn't all, it's rare that somebody is great from the word go,
43
unless maybe you're an athlete when you have to be good at 14 or 15.
44
But I think you take time to develop talent.
45
You take time to develop a voice.
46
And the more that you're seeing along the way,
47
the more that will feed into whatever it is that you may be creating.
48
In the end, it comes from who you are.
49
If you're working in the world of media or the world of fashion,
50
you are driven by your heart,
51
you're driven by your talent,
52
and you're driven by your instinct.
53
And if you start to question
54
and look at what people are doing to the left of you or to the right of you,
55
you are going to lose that clarity of thought.
56
So it's so, so important to listen to the information,
57
to hear the information but in the end it has to come from who you are.
