The Big Bang should have created equal amounts of matter and antimatter.

When the two meet, they annihilate each other and transform back into pure energy.

But if there had been equal amounts of matter and antimatter, we'd see a universe made 50% out of antimatter or nothing but a sea of radiation.

So where did it all go?

If there were regions with antimatter stars and galaxies, they would clash against regions of matter,

So some scientists think there must have been an imbalance at the beginning, for every billion particles of antimatter, a billion and one of matter.

If they really were created in equal amounts, then the laws of physics must treat matter and antimatter differently.

We've seen hints of this, matter-antimatter pairs of baryons, the building blocks of protons and neutrons decay in slightly different ways.

But such tiny differences aren't enough to explain where the antimatter went.

That's why scientists are willing to pay over 60 trillion dollars to produce a single gram of antimatter.

The more we probe their tiny asymmetries, the closer we get to learning how anything exists at all.
