Lesson 6 Fossil Fuels What do plants have to do with pollution?
22
Aren't plants good for the Earth?
23
The plants we see around us help keep the air clean.
24
But plants from 300 million years ago are polluting the planet.
25
How is this possible?
26
Let's learn about how plants from long ago can cause pollution today.
27
We require a lot of energy to heat our homes, run our cars, and light our cities.
28
Most of this energy comes from fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas.
29
Fossil fuels may give us the energy we need, but this also creates a lot of air pollution.
30
When fossil fuels are burned, they release harmful gases that mix with our clean air.
31
This is a big problem in urban areas where there are many people.
32
Huge amounts of fossil fuels are burned in big cities.
33
Industrial cities like London, England in the late 1800s had
34
so much smoke in the air that it was hard to see the sun.
35
Many people got sick and had trouble breathing.
36
So what does all this have to do with plants?
37
Well, fossil fuels are formed from plants.
38
Over time, plant remains change into coal, oil, and natural gas.
39
But this process takes millions of years.
40
That means fossil fuels can't be replaced quickly or easily.
41
Today we are using fossil fuels faster than they are being made.
42
One day the earth will run out.
43
Let's conserve our fossil fuels to make sure this doesn't happen.
