Mackenzie over here.
2
How's fight week going so far for you as champion?
3
Fight week has been amazing.
4
It's definitely a little bit different.
5
Doing the face-offs with the belt in my hand, I'm kind of like, how do I shake her hand?
6
But yeah, I mean, it's been, besides like all the interviews, that hasn't changed too much.
7
But just getting used to having the belt over my shoulder most of the time during fight week.
8
But it's been fun.
9
Yeah, and I saw you had that face-off with her yesterday, and we had the chance to speak with her a little while ago.
10
She was in here.
11
But I guess what was your read?
12
Was there anything that you could take away from that moment, you know, us facing off with her for the first time?
13
No, I mean, just – I mean, that was the first time I've ever met her, so I've never even seen her in person.
14
But, yeah, I mean, I think she looks happy.
15
She looks confident.
16
And I think we both look like we were there to be – to throw down.
17
Yeah, it's been kind of an interesting little build-up.
18
She was in here, like I said earlier, and she seems to think that you don't like her.
19
And I don't know, do you not like her?
20
Is that true?
21
I don't like her or dislike her.
22
I don't know her.
23
So, but I mean, yeah, I think it's really cool how she has the most, is tied with the most finishes.
24
I mean, there's a lot of stuff I'm learning about her this week.
25
not because I have anything against her.
26
I think she definitely maybe had her eyes more on me than I did on her, but just because she was in the 125 division, she wasn't even in our division,
27
and then she came down, and then I was just focused on me and Wei Li at the time and ahead of me, not really who's fighting behind me.
28
So I never really paid attention, but not that I don't like her or do like her or anything like that.
29
I don't know her, but I really respect her journey in the UFC.
30
She was on the Ultimate Fighter, and I was able to take part in the Ultimate Fighter with Team Bisping in DC.
31
So what the girls and the guys go through, I give a lot of respect to it.
32
And you can see how – I don't know if she won, but I think she won.
33
But to get up here and be fighting for the title shot is nice.
34
But I think she's the one who doesn't like me.
35
She actually did confirm that in her interview earlier.
36
Yeah.
37
Now that you've had time – because there was that little period of time, right, where it seemed a little uncertain who your first challenger was going to be.
38
We didn't really know what was going on with Wei Li.
39
Now that she is in front of you, you feel like she's a worthy title challenger level opponent for you now that you've studied her?
40
Well, when they had mentioned maybe the winner of Amanda Lemos and Jillian would be my next title fight.
41
So I think Amanda, because I had a loss to her, and then Jillian, I know she was on a four-fight win streak.
42
So, I mean, for the strawweight division, you guys know how it is
43
if you have like a good like two two back-to-back wins even three you can cut
44
that line pretty easily you know and um her having four four straight wins
45
and now five straight wins you know i was like yeah this makes sense
46
but definitely i was happy especially her being a grappler um
47
i think that's a good matchup yeah i think that's what's
48
exciting a lot of people about this fight right is
49
that she's known for her jiu-jitsu and you obviously are too um i'm sure
50
if i asked you the question of who had the better grappling you would say you but
51
if you're at like a 10 what would you give her
52
like numbers you know on a scale of one to 10 um for mma i mean like what i think eight
53
nine close but you feel pretty confident
54
if the fight hits the mat there'll be a pretty clear discrepancy about who's better in
55
that area um i mean no
56
because i i mean it's five minutes you know each round
57
is only five minutes I mean five minutes isn't a lot of time to work especially
58
when she's good and she knows what she's doing I don't know what belt she is
59
but if she's a black belt well I mean there's other girls
60
that are black belts to like Vian and stuff like that
61
but so she's someone who's aggressive and goes forward
62
and she looks for the attack you know she I think
63
she's gonna try to progress in the in the fight she's not gonna just get a takedown
64
and and just stay safe I think she'll try to catch her back
65
and she's not someone who I want to fall in a bad position with.
66
So, I mean, if she knows how to stay safe
67
and I know how to stay safe and we both know how to attack and, you know, we only have two minutes left because it took two and a half minutes just to get to the ground, you know, because they're still punching and cage and all this,
68
you know, I mean, it's an MMA fight, you know, I don't think people could see that much, especially when I've seen some of her submissions now with the UFC posting this week,
69
like armbar, she attacks from the bottom, she attacks from the top.
70
So, I mean, an armbar is an armbar, but I mean, you still have titles and you still have, you know, the accolades that the person brings to the fight.
71
And she has been submitted.
72
She was armbar.
73
I think she, I know some of her fights in jujitsu, she got leg locked, you know,
74
so there are definitely, definitely weaknesses or holes there, you know, I haven't been submitted or things like that.
75
I mean, so I don't think in this fight, you'll see like, oh wow, I'm doing something totally crazy that she doesn't do.
76
But I do have some tricks up my sleeve.
77
Thank you, good luck.
78
Mackenzie right here.
79
Five years ago, you did an interview with us and you said
80
that you felt women had to do more work to gain the respect in MMA compared to the men.
81
Now that you have that belt in front of you, do you feel like you've finally gotten the respect maybe from the fans that watch MMA?
82
No, they're still the same.
83
I mean, it's still the whole like bathroom breaks and you know what I mean?
84
It's just, I mean, what they want is like trash talkers, you know?
85
And the woman, I think most of the woman, it's like we kind of bring the more, I don't know, elegant side or chic or, you know what I mean?
86
That part to MMA, although we can, I think that's cool that we can like turn it on and turn it off, you know, and we can be like, humil...
87
I've come from martial arts, so since I'm three, you win and you can lose in the same tournament, in a jiu-jitsu tournament on the same day.
88
So a win and a loss doesn't make you better than someone else or things like that.
89
It's the consistency over the whole year that makes you the number one in the world, not if you just won on one day.
90
The fans, they're crazy.
91
Of course, I think women, we're starting to bring more and more exciting fights just because of the level.
92
It's getting better and better.
93
but I mean what they really want is trash talking like the Ronda Rousey's
94
and the rivalries and things like that and you see
95
that even with the guys if the guys are like more humble
96
or more quieter then you know the fans are kind of talking
97
but at the same time there are fans you know so
98
if they hate it if they like it that's what we need.
99
You know, we fight for the fans.
100
And, but yeah, I think if we can keep showing exciting fights, you see like Rose Namajunas, you know, knocking out Wei Li and all these crazy things,
101
that's where we keep getting the respect that we want.
102
So we just got to train hard and try to have good matches.
103
Did those comments, like you said, like fans saying, like, oh, bathroom break when the women's fights, did that ever bother you in your career
104
or did you just kind of push that off to the side and so like they don't know what they're talking about?
105
I don't know that's I mean yeah that's like not
106
that they don't know what they're talking about I mean it's still like a I don't know like a taste
107
or it's their opinion but I mean it definitely bothers me more
108
when they say like I don't know that I'm gonna get beat up
109
or things like that or that they don't see my actual technique
110
but if they say they know the fight's not exciting or something like that I'm not too
111
I'm not too worried about it.
112
Hi, over here.
113
To your left, there you go.
114
Obviously, coming into the UFC was such a storied jiu-jitsu resume, right?
115
Did winning the title finally allow you to separate Mackenzie Turner, the jiu-jitsu champion, from the MMA fighter?
116
Yeah, for sure.
117
I mean, definitely me winning.
118
That was like one of the biggest representatives, representations, and I don't know, kind of give back that I could do for my sport,
119
my martial art for Jiu-Jitsu in my community.
120
But that was just, it's really good to be able to solidify myself as an MMA fighter because, I mean, I feel like I won the fight, my title, mostly with my striking.
121
Obviously, my Jiu-Jitsu is what makes people scared, and that gives me such a good hand in the fight.
122
You know, people kind of back off on how they fight me, and they fight differently.
123
So that obviously is a big reason of what got me here.
124
but I mean just feeling comfortable with the striking
125
and being able to adapt with whatever they throw at me
126
so I mean I became a champion in a completely different sport now
127
so um I definitely represent jiu-jitsu but I think that's separated now
128
and I'm a champion in MMA yeah and taking on someone
129
that likes to do like she aims to go to the ground as well does
130
that make the fight a little more exciting for you
131
and do you think maybe look you want to go to the ground with me great
132
but I'm to show you there's levels to this too oh yeah for sure i mean not
133
that yeah like levels to this
134
but i mean it's just i don't i don't know
135
if she's fought someone who like doesn't want to go to the ground with her you know um
136
so i mean we're gonna be definitely engaging that's why i think this fight is gonna be
137
so exciting because i think there will be scrambles
138
and there will be um you know grappling exchanges
139
and i'm super excited about that because it kind of this whole camp i trained
140
so much my jiu-jitsu and it was just really comforting to be back kind of
141
to if I was going to go fight at the World Championships, you know, like I used to 15 years ago.
142
So I think it will be fun, and yeah, it will be a good fight.
143
All right, last one for me.
144
Now that you're champion, when you became champion, when you won the title, right, did you look back at your journey and maybe go, you know, I've had to adapt, I've had to grow, I've had to change things here and there.
145
And when you look back, was there a specific fight or maybe even a specific loss that you thought, you know what, that's the one, that's the one that got me to push so hard that I got to this title?
146
I think my fight against Jan Shaunan, that was my main event.
147
Mark Zuckerberg was there, and it was just one judge gave it a draw, and then she won with the minority decision.
148
So it was a fight that I felt that I attacked so much on the ground,
149
and I felt just with the judges and the boxing commission that they didn't have the...
150
I felt like they gave her more respect for defending all the submissions
151
and all the danger that I put her in than how much danger I was actually putting her in.
152
And then since they saw it that way, they didn't kind of look about how me being a grappler, how I was standing and exchanging her,
153
and I hurt her too on the standing.
154
So I felt like I could have like or draw or won that fight with the jiu-jitsu mindset.
155
And so then when I lost that and I saw kind of, I understood the game of MMA, you know, and how, okay, ground and pound is, could be better and,
156
you know, worth more than me putting her in, like, these omopladas and, you know, all these chokes where I can, I'm hearing her, like, you know, like, choking, you know.
157
And I'm like, if this was in jujitsu, this would be, like, so dangerous for, like, I'd get all these advantages and all these things like that.
158
so that really helped me understand the game of MMA
159
and I think that's what helped change my mindset
160
and helped me get to the to the belt
161
and like on my title fight I'm like thinking about damage
162
and damage and damage and not just attacking and wasting energy for knowing
163
that people who are watching they want to see damage.
164
Thank you.
165
Mackenzie over here.
166
So obviously you got to participate on Tough a little bit this season help coach.
167
Is that something you could ever see yourself or want to maybe take a head coaching role on?
168
Oh yeah for sure that was fun.
169
It was really cool to like meet the girls
170
and the guys um and i was lucky
171
because it was the strawweight division so i was able to get the training in
172
but i mean i feel like not that i feel bad
173
but it's like it's a lot of pressure on them they're like it's monday 4 p.m
174
and they're like killing each other
175
and then they have to go fight each other like next week
176
and cut weight so what they put themselves through i'm like this is crazy you know
177
but to be able to be there and kind of try
178
and i don't know be an example for them and just help maybe inspire them a little bit
179
was fun but definitely I would like to get what would would be interesting to be part of it
180
and be one of the coaches and see who I would fight at the end or something like that.
181
And then last one for me obviously all attention on Jillian
182
but is there a clear number one contender after her do you maybe think Wei Li would be
183
that number one contender if she does come back to Charlotte?
184
I don't know I have no idea about I thought Wei Li was gonna be the my first title defense
185
so I really have no idea who they would offer after
186
and I don't have my eyes on anyone either so just chilling.
187
Mackenzie over here
188
when you won the belt your daughter was the happiest person in the world she looks
189
so happy on screen what has she told you ahead of your first title defense?
190
She tells me to train a lot because she wants now she understands that
191
if we win we get another one of these you know
192
it's not like we don't pass it on to someone
193
so she tells me to She's trained a lot to get a whole bunch of these.
194
She thinks it's super cool, so she wants to have them all around the house.
195
Awesome, best of skill.
196
Thank you.
197
Awesome, over here.
198
There's the old expression that a fighter gets 30% better after they gain that first title.
199
Do you feel that that's happened with you?
200
100%.
201
I mean, my first training back, my punches, my kicks, my movement was like, it was just crazy.
202
And I was like, coach, this is so crazy, you know?
203
And it was just, in my opinion, it's the pressure that comes off of you.
204
And then you can really just go into training and evolve and get better.
205
And you just, you don't have pressure on you anymore, you know? you already accomplished
206
that goal that you wanted and so now you just get
207
so much better for sure we've talked about the excitement around
208
women's mma the current state it's in right now there hasn't
209
been a woman as a main event in almost 18 months
210
do you feel any pressure on putting on an exciting performance
211
this saturday i mean i always feel a little bit pressure to put on exciting performance you know just
212
because i'm always putting that on myself i want to have a great fight
213
and I want I like bonuses
214
and I like having like you know fight of the nights
215
and things like that
216
so I mean definitely like I was saying before I would like to help
217
if I can help in any way I mean I'm not a good trash talker
218
so I'm not I can't go that route but
219
if I can you know get especially now in Paramount Plus
220
you get you know people who don't do martial arts who watching
221
and see the fight
222
and say like man what is she doing it the girl looks like a pretzel you know
223
or not or whatever knock out or especially being the champ
224
and being a mother and just you know try to represent
225
that the best way possible so yeah definitely i have
226
that pressure of trying to get exciting matches for helping women's mma
227
and ufc in general thank you mckenzie over here yeah uh ian gary recently said
228
that um the world would be a better place
229
if women were in charge I just want to know being a UFC woman champion just kind of your opinion
230
and if you agree with him um I mean that's
231
so hard I'm I come from like a little bit more
232
traditional um like upbringing you know obviously the woman my family are super strong
233
and independent and they taught me how to be strong woman
234
but I don't know I like the guy protecting and you know
235
leading and doing that stuff and I like to just relax
236
and if I need to go to war with him I will
237
but um yeah I mean I'm a mommy and stuff like
238
that so I think it's very good woman strong woman
239
and we don't depend on guys we can be independent but I like the man taking the lead thank you
240
thank you Mackenzie over here uh first up what was your reaction
241
when you heard that your fight was going to be the co-main event on this card?
242
I mean, I kind of, I imagined that, you know, my title fight was a co-main event.
243
So, yeah, I mean, I thought it was going to be happy.
244
I mean, I liked when I was fight nights because the whole poster was, like, just me and my opponent.
245
But it's cool.
246
I mean, two title fights, being fighting with legend, the guy in the guy's division, like Islam and Ian, And all these guys, for me, it's awesome.
247
And also, what was your reaction when you heard
248
that your fight was going to be held here in Philadelphia
249
for the first UFC event in this city in over seven years?
250
Man, I was super excited, especially just with the whole Rocky story and Philly cheesesteak sandwiches.
251
And, you know, I was really excited to be here.
252
And I haven't had, like, the best results on the East Coast, so I'm really trying to just break that.
253
Not superstition, but, you know, I like to take that stuff out, you know.
254
And so I'm excited to throw it down out here in Philly.
255
Final one for me is when you look at your opponent, what do you think is going to be one of your biggest challenges?
256
I mean, I think the biggest challenge with Jillian would just be,
257
I mean, I think like her not making a mistake.
258
You know, I think she's just going to like give her heart, you know, like she's trying to accomplish something that she wants so bad.
259
So I think just the biggest challenge will be having to control her focus,
260
you know, and try to cut down her confidence throughout the fight.
261
Jillian, right?
262
I feel like you've taken the long route to get here to the title shot.
263
So I guess now that we're only a couple days removed from
264
or ahead of your first title defense or title fight here in the UFC, I guess, how's camp been?
265
How's life been?
266
What are the emotions?
267
I actually have the longest route out of any female to a title fight.
268
So this will be my 21st fight with the UFC.
269
And this camp, it went absolutely phenomenal.
270
Honestly, one of my best.
271
I feel like I'm more confident than ever.
272
And I'm just ready for this opportunity.
273
Do you think that, I mean, like when Mara was doing this and when Charles Oliveira was on these runs too, where it took them so many wins to get the title shot, they got that fan support behind them?
274
Because like, when is it their turn?
275
Have you felt that from the fans too?
276
Because after McKenzie's last win, everyone was saying Tatiana, everyone was saying Whaley
277
and then there was like this kind of slow surge in
278
your name after your performances have you felt kind of the
279
fans getting behind you i guess a little bit yes
280
and no i felt a lot of the canadian fans getting
281
behind me i will say 100 canada has been in full support
282
and i breaking down mckenzie obviously everyone is going to say grappling versus grappling
283
but on the countdown you said you know she's going to have kind of the traditional jujitsu approach
284
and i'm the mma grappler so i I guess when you break down Mackenzie's skill set, I guess, are you impressed?
285
What do you make of her skill set?
286
I mean, I don't want to diminish anything.
287
I feel like she has really good Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
288
It's just this is MMA.
289
So I think that's where I'm going to be able to shine.
290
I think that she's going to bring a lot of fight, but it's going to wear out in the later rounds, and that's where I'm going to shine.
291
Historically, when we see two high-level grapplers, I'm sure you've seen it, it kind of turns into a striking matchup because they cancel each other out.
292
so i guess everyone knows her skills on the ground
293
but what do you make of her striking
294
because this is an mma fight after all the fight does
295
start standing uh i feel like her striking is aggressive she's very defensively open for my strikes as well though
296
but she's definitely going to come at me and throw everything she's got
297
and i saw an interview where you said you don't think she likes you
298
and i asked mckenzie during that yesterday
299
and she's like i've never even met her i don't know where this is coming from
300
so do you actually think that she doesn't
301
or is this something you have to build in your head to kind of maybe?
302
She was making comments all through the camp about how she doesn't know me, she doesn't think my jujitsu is good and all this stuff, and now she's like, oh no,
303
it's not anything, it's not that I don't like her.
304
I'm like, why are we trying to take this back now?
305
Like, you're talking all this shit through camp, Keep that same energy.
306
So would you ever respected it more if she just came up to you and was like, I don't actually like you, like, to your face?
307
Oh, yeah.
308
No, because I don't like her right now, you know?
309
I'm like, we're about to fight each other this week.
310
Good luck.
311
Thank you.
312
Jillian, over here.
313
You know, what's the experience in Philly been like?
314
Have you done any bucket list items in the middle of all this championship fight camp?
315
I haven't had time to do anything at all.
316
I actually flew out to Toronto for a little bit of a media tour on Monday, and my flight got canceled.
317
So I didn't make it to Philly until yesterday, which was a little bit unexpected.
318
So I haven't had time to do anything really.
319
You have any bucket list things you want to do with the belt on Sunday, maybe?
320
I guess I haven't put too much thought into that yet.
321
And one more for me.
322
Din Thomas is somebody who supported you and mentored you for a long time.
323
How much would it mean to bring the belt back to him, and what's the biggest thing he's taught you along the way?
324
It's been since I was 15 years old, Din and I have been working together, so I think it really is our belt more than anything else.
325
He's molded me into the fighter that I am today, so it would mean the world for me to be able to win that for us.
326
Awesome.
327
Best of luck on Saturday.
328
Thank you.
329
Thank you, Julian.
330
You did have a face-off with Mackenzie last night though.
331
Can you just tell us kind of what your takeaways from
332
that were and obviously getting to do it on the famous Rocky steps?
333
I guess on the similar note of I expected her to be a little bit more aggressive.
334
She shook my hand twice and it kind of threw me off where I was like, thought we were talking shit.
335
You told me on Monday when we were in Toronto
336
that you feel that belt's already yours to be able to see it up close during that face-off.
337
Does that just give you a little more of a boost?
338
I guess a little bit, but I feel like it's just another fight to me.
339
It's still just that.
340
It's just going in there and being able to have the opportunity to perform, and I just hope that I'm able to do that.
341
What are your expectations for the press conference tomorrow?
342
I know you said you hope she talks a little trash.
343
Are you thinking it might go a different way now, or how do you think it's going to go?
344
I guess I'm not really sure how it's going to go, but like I said, I'm keeping the same energy.
345
I still don't like her.
346
Jillian over here.
347
UFC put out a stat this week.
348
You're tied with Amanda Nunes for most finishes amongst women in MMA.
349
What would it mean to get that finish this weekend and take that record?
350
Amanda has been my absolute idol through the sport.
351
I feel like there is no woman that is better than her.
352
So to be able to beat one of her records is really like, that's a big step for me.
353
That's really what means a lot.
354
And then what kind of champion do you envision yourself being?
355
Very active with title defenses, interest in two belts.
356
What are your thoughts there?
357
I definitely want to be very active.
358
I feel like I've always been very active through my career.
359
And I don't think champs should move up until they clear out their division.
360
So if I'm able to clear out my division, then I might move up.
361
But at this time, it's staying in 115.
362
And then last one for me.
363
I don't want to get too far ahead of the fight or anything.
364
But other than you right now, is there a clear number one contender in the division?
365
I guess there's always a question mark over Wei Li right now to see where she's at.
366
I think that with another win under her belt, Fatima's coming up, or Sayonara too.
367
I'm like, they're girls who I'm definitely watching and looking at for the years coming up.
368
You were talking about the long road you took to get here, right?
369
And, you know, filled with losses, setbacks and everything.
370
With a loss, a setback, especially watching all the other girls get a shot before you did, even though a lot of fans and yourself, I'm sure, felt you deserved a shot at that point.
371
Any of that ever kind of maybe put a doubt in your mind if you ever actually get to this point?
372
No, it's just a bit about the joy of the ride.
373
I've just been having fun with it the whole time.
374
I feel like one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned
375
was literally as I was taking the steps out of the octagon, when I got TKO'd by Macy Barber, my coach Dean came up to me and he was like, it's over.
376
And it's like, you just have to realize that in those moments, it's over.
377
There's nothing you can do about it.
378
We move on to the next moment and we just keep pushing forward.
379
There you go.
380
And you've known, I mean, we all know you're one of the best grapplers in the UFC, you know, without a doubt.
381
But let's say you get in there
382
so you do go to the ground Let's say you submit someone like Mackenzie Dern with the credentials
383
that she has what does that rank for you?
384
What would that rank for you personally like as a grappler?
385
No, I think
386
that definitely be my one of my top submissions in the
387
UFC Especially there is no one as credentialed in her in the UFC in BJJ as she is
388
so I and she's never been said before So I think to get
389
that like feather in my cap would be great Wait, and last one for me.
390
You went on Saturday.
391
Where would you, if you could, you know, tell Dana, hey, I want to go here.
392
Where would you want your first defensive to be?
393
Obviously, Canada is where I'd love to have it, but if Waley's coming back, I'm down to go to Shanghai.
394
All right.
395
Best of luck.
396
Thank you.
397
Jillian, over here.
398
You're riding your longest win streak coming into your first title shot.
399
What changed in your career to allow you to put all these wins together?
400
I think I just kind of found the right, I guess, mixture that I needed to make me feel confident and prepared walking in.
401
Between my coach, Dean Thomas, and the goat shed, I feel like we just have – we found something good there.
402
Awesome.
403
And obviously, you guys have very high-level MMA grappling.
404
Let's take away the punches, take away the kicks.
405
If this was purely a jiu-jitsu-only match, how do you think you would do against Mackenzie Dern?
406
No, I would give it to her, honestly.
407
I think that if it is pure jiu-jitsu – I haven't trained pure jiu-jitsu since I got into the UFC.
408
I've only been training jujitsu with strikes.
409
So even opening a closed guard, I don't really know how to without punching somebody in the face at this point.
410
So if it was pure jujitsu, I wouldn't be surprised if she had a little bit of an edge.
411
Awesome.
412
Thank you.
413
I just want to know, representing Canada, what it's going to be like to potentially win the belt
414
and be the first champ since GSP and represent both the new generation of men and women in Canada?
415
I feel like every time I hear it, it just feels unreal.
416
To be Canada's first woman champ is just, it's, I'm like, I just don't feel like I'm that cool, you know?
417
I'm just doing this having fun.
418
So to be able to say that I'm like leading the MMA in Canada, I guess I don't think of it as that big, but it's definitely unreal to me.
419
What does it mean to you to have your title fight be on the co-main event of this card?
420
I think being on the co-main event of a card with Islam headlining it, who is the greatest right now, I think it's just a great spot,
421
a great opportunity, and hopefully a lot of eyes are going to be on the show.
422
And when you heard this fight was going to be held here in Philadelphia, what was your initial reaction?
423
My initial reaction was I heard the arena was going to be huge and the fans are crazy, and that's all I'm looking forward to.
424
I love that energy.
