2
Welcome back to English Unleashed.
3
This is a very short and easy episode for a relaxed Tuesday.
4
So get comfortable, take a slow breath, and enjoy a few minutes of English with me.
5
I'm Tom.
6
Today we are talking about something you may have said to yourself.
7
I will speak English when I feel ready.
8
It sounds like a good plan.
9
Learn more words.
10
Study a little more.
11
Then one day, open your mouth and speak.
12
But when does that day arrive.
13
Let me tell you about a woman called Sarah.
14
Sarah had a small notebook.
15
Every evening she wrote five English words in it.
16
Her writing was beautiful.
17
She used different colors.
18
She added examples.
19
After a year, she had several notebooks.
20
But she had never had a full conversation in English.
21
Then a new neighbor moved into her building.
22
Her name was Kate, and she spoke English.
23
One morning, Sarah saw Kate.
24
She was near the front door.
25
Kate was holding two bags and looking for her keys.
26
Sarah wanted to say, can I help you?
27
She knew every word.
28
Can I help you.
29
Four small words.
30
But then she began to think.
31
What if she answers quickly?
32
What if she asks me something?
33
What if I cannot understand?
34
So Sarah looked down and walked past.
35
Upstairs, she put her bag on the table and she felt sad.
36
She did not need another word in her notebook.
37
She needed a chance to use the words already there.
38
The next morning, she saw Kate again.
39
This time, Kate was carrying a large box.
40
Sarah felt the same worry.
41
Her heart was beating fast.
42
Her hands felt warm.
43
She did not suddenly feel ready, but she said it anyway.
44
Can I help you?
45
Kate smiled.
46
Yes, please.
47
Could you halt the door?
48
Sarah heard door.
49
She looked at the box.
50
She understood.
51
She held the door open.
52
Then Kate said, thank you.
53
And Sarah answered, you're welcome.
54
That was all.
55
No long conversation.
56
No difficult words, just a door, a box, and a little help.
57
Yet, something was different.
58
Before that morning, speaking English was something Sarah planned to do.
59
Now it was something she had done.
60
Later, she opened her notebook book.
61
Under her new words, she wrote one sentence.
62
Today I used my English.
63
Perhaps you need a sentence like that too.
64
You may think your first conversation must be interesting.
65
You may want to sound clever.
66
You may hope to speak for 10 minutes without stopping.
67
But your first step can be much smaller ask where something
68
is say you like someone's jacket ask a simple question about
69
their dog you do not need to tell your whole life story you only need to begin
70
and yes the other person might say something you do not understand.
71
That is possible.
72
You can say, sorry, could you say that again?
73
or a little slower, please.
74
You can also say, I'm learning English.
75
These are useful things to say during a conversation.
76
You can ask for help and still take part.
77
Think about making a cup of tea in someone else's kitchen.
78
You do not know where the cups are.
79
You cannot find a spoon do you stand there silently
80
because you should know everything first probably not you ask where are the cups someone shows you
81
and you continue a conversation can work like that you find your way while you are in it.
82
Some days it feels easy, other days it feels difficult.
83
You may stop, you may forget a word, or you may give a very short answer.
84
But let that be part of the experience.
85
Thank you for spending part of your Tuesday with English Unleashed.
86
I'm Tom.
