1
I love your shoes.
2
Thank you.
3
It's so surreal with you guys sitting right in front of me.
4
Welcome back to Pick It For Shows Podcast and welcome back to another episode.
5
I cannot explain how excited right now because it feels totally surreal that these two are sitting right in front of me.
6
Let's welcome Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.
7
At the beginning of the movie, Andy was fired.
8
So I'm wondering, have you ever lost a job opportunity in real life, Anne?
9
What was it like and how did you handle that?
10
Oh, yes.
11
I have lost a job that I really kind of wanted.
12
And I thought, oh, I'd be really good in this.
13
And it was to Jessica Lange.
14
Jessica Lange, she was going to do the Patti, oh you know, the singer, oh god I've lost my brain.
15
Patsy Cline?
16
Patsy Cline.
17
And Carol Rice, a friend of mine, was directing it.
18
He directed the French Tenants Woman and he gave her that role.
19
We were friends and I said okay,
20
fine, but give me your house in London to live in while you go to America and make that.
21
I was making out of Africa out of London so he gave me his house.
22
So I got a house out of it.
23
I lost a job.
24
Right, and how about Anne?
25
I have yet to be fired.
26
Wow.
27
It hasn't happened yet at least at least as far as I know.
28
No wait I take it back.
29
No I was fired.
30
I was 100% fired.
31
I just blocked it out.
32
No, it was awful because it was a part that I loved
33
and I was attached to it for three years and I developed the part for three years.
34
And then I found out he was, and I called the director because I thought we got a green light and I'm like, so when should a, it was like a specialty skill and I was like, when should I start rehearsals?
35
And he was very quiet.
36
And then I found out he was meeting other actresses.
37
And I just said, I'm so sorry.
38
What happened?
39
And then what I heard back was that he never actually saw me in the part.
40
And I was like, well, maybe you could have mentioned it once in the last three years when we were talking about it.
41
Oh, wait, I've been fired lots of times.
42
Now think of it.
43
Turn that one around.
44
We've all been there.
45
Yeah, so I remember there was a scene in the movie where Andy was sitting in the car with Miranda and Nigel.
46
And she had this phase like right this is what it's like working with you
47
So I wonder have you ever been stuck working with someone who's a pain and how did you handle that situation?
48
Not well Yes, but this was back in me we're all so young,
49
but I was working back in the 80s and and I was working with someone I won't...
50
Well, I better not even tell that story now that I've identified what...
51
what decade it was.
52
But I had a problem.
53
It resolved itself.
54
I'm gonna pump you for details later.
55
This is so intriguing.
56
Why can't we do it after the camera's off?
57
We're in a unique position because we don't have to work with people for 20 years at a time.
58
That's true.
59
The longest a job is ever going to be is a few months.
60
And so I usually just kind of talk about the weather and kind of suck it up.
61
If somebody's really egregiously behaved, if they're being unprofessional, if they're late, if they're rude to the crew,
62
I'll find a way to pull them aside and kind of have a nice chat about it.
63
But usually other people resolve it for you.
64
The director, the producer, they see what's going on, they go, oh man, this I got to deal with.
65
Well, one time I asked them, because I was like, I think it's going to be a little bit of an issue, maybe.
66
And they came back to me and said, we actually think that you would be the most effective communicator.
67
Oh, sure. So we did.
68
So yeah, so you just, you know, there's no need to make things unpleasant, more unpleasant than they are.
69
Right.
70
Yeah, but usually if I can ride it out, I'll probably err on that side.
71
Mmm, and I really like this scene where Miranda was on the red carpet with Nigel discussing a PR crisis.
72
So things are kind of going down, but she still has to maintain that bright smile on her face.
73
What's the situation that stuck with you where maybe you're really stressed out, but you still have to handle it with a smile?
74
Oh, press tours.
75
When you jet lagged and you can't remember your own name, never mind a singer from the 70s.
76
I think that stress is so interesting.
77
I think because I started acting when I was very young, there were a lot of things that felt very overwhelming
78
and I didn't necessarily either have the skills to deal with it or that I wasn't developmentally ready to deal with it.
79
So I think that I actually had a stress reaction at things for a long time.
80
And it was one of the things that I love about aging is because you realize, oh, I can make a different choice.
81
I can leave that tendency behind.
82
I don't have to carry that habit with me.
83
So I actually try not to smile through my stress.
84
I try to just acknowledge it and let it go.
85
Because I guarantee someone else out there is having a worse day than me.
86
And so if I can just feel a little sympathy for them, I probably will feel a lot better about play usually pretty glorious position.
87
Right, right.
88
So last question, was it easier to film the sequel compared to the first one
89
or there are any aspects that felt more challenging?
90
Both.
91
It was easier to shoot it and there were aspects that were more challenging.
92
Certainly it was harder for me to wear stilettos for 16 hours a day than it was 20 years ago.
93
But in terms of fitting in with this group we all know each other,
94
love each other and it was just such a gift to be able to have a, first of all, to get a good script ever,
95
but to get to come back together after so much time, it was really lovely.
96
And that's something rare.
97
Yeah.
98
How about Hannah?
99
Oh yeah, I mean I think it's, you know, I keep feeling like we got the band back together
100
And so there are certain moments sometimes when you're working with people you maybe don't know very well, you think, oh gosh, did I make the right call?
101
Am I on the right team?
102
And this one, if any of those feelings popped up, I'm like, yeah, you guys make awesome music together.
103
So just go out there and jam and have fun.
104
Yeah, right.
105
So thank you so much for your time.
106
Thank you.
107
I really enjoyed it.
108
Thank you for your interesting questions.
109
Thank you.
