1
If you are struggling hard to put your hands above your head, your main focus should be looking at your thoracic spine.
2
Because we sit down a lot and our back is rounded forward, I mean, if you just think about it, round your shoulders forward and then try to put your hands up, you can't do it.
3
And then when you go to push a barbell, what happens is you end up trying to extend
4
and your low back takes all the hits and your overhead press looks like a standing bench press.
5
Now, if we can actually work on thoracic extension and pulling our shoulders back and having more mobility in this thoracic spine,
6
now our scapulas have more runway to be able to drift and give us the range of motion that we're looking for.
7
Now, one of the techniques that we've done for years is the thoracic plate roller.
8
And it gets its name because all you need is a plate and a roller.
9
And it's very simple.
10
The roller is going to apply
11
that counter pressure to my T -spine as I access more and more overhead range of motion.
12
Now, if you are a complete beginner, you will find that this is quite challenging.
13
So pay attention.
14
What you want to do, find that position where that roller is in your scapulas, lift your bum up off the ground,
15
and then proceed to do around 10 reps where you actively try to get closer
16
and closer and closer to touch
17
that floor once you finally get there walk your feet out
18
breathe into it relax try to spend at least two minutes in here
19
and really extend through this entire range as that roller puts
20
that necessary counter pressure to improve that thoracic extension and sure enough
21
when you go to press things over your head you won't be taxing
22
that low back as much all in all excellent technique and definitely worth a save
