1
Hey guys, Nick over here at Randy's.
2
Today I'm going to be tearing down the new ZF 8 -speed power line transmission for you.
3
Getting this up on the bench, it appears this thing is heavy and weighs all over 400 pounds just like the new 10 -speeds do.
4
Also, it seems to be we're not using any dipsticks just like the ZFs and the 10 -speeds are currently not using.
5
Damn, what is it with these manufacturers and these new plastic pans?
6
There must be something I don't know.
7
All right, pan off on the ZF 8 now.
8
Looks like the filter's going to be integral to the pan
9
on these like they are on all zf8 speeds i have to find something else to figure
10
that out taking apart this valve body kind of makes me
11
happy i can see all the bolts appear to be the
12
same length that's not going to be a problem all right
13
now it appears with the valve body out we're running a
14
mechatronic system in these just kind of like the tecans and 8ls
15
and 6l 90s computers solenoids all integrated into one assembly on
16
this valve body digging into this pump cover it appears we're
17
actually going to be able to remove this thing a lot easier than prying
18
and pulling like a 68 cover she pops right out all
19
right looks like on the pump cover on the zf8 they
20
actually had to integrate a big bearing inside here to help hold that big converter they installed into this beast
21
and just a little bit something different we're not used to
22
here at randy's a remote chain driven pump they probably make a tool for this
23
but it appears a good old six cell smack the stator
24
trick gets this out real easy now digging into the meat
25
and potatoes on this transmission we're looking at the b clutches
26
here they seem to be pretty beefy like we're not going
27
to have any issues with these failing in the future
28
but it also seems like we have these anti -drag waverings
29
in here to actually keep the clutches from dragging after they
30
release getting even further into this to our p1 planetary it
31
looks like it resembles all the other zf8 speeds we've seen before we're going to keep digging into this
32
and see what else it looks like the input shaft looks
33
identical we got a reluctor wheel in there she looks identical even our p2 planetaries look just the same
34
so far everything resembles a normal zf8 speed next we're going to be pulling out this heavy c
35
and d clutch drum now
36
that we're going to start to disassemble this drum we're going to get to the e clutch drum
37
and where we're going to start to notice some differences in
38
how they do the eight speeds all right seems like for
39
you guys this is going to be a good thing on your trucks
40
unlike the 8 hp 90 and 95 and the hellcats
41
that took about a thousand horsepower stock before you started tearing
42
up this e -clutch drum they decided to upgrade it
43
and make it still in this setup
44
but what we're going to be starting to work on we're
45
in the process of working on right now it's a new setup of frictions and stills
46
so we can actually start adding some more holding capacity to
47
both of these drums now we're going to start digging into both the c
48
and e clutch drums and looking at the frictions
49
and stills frictions look like they're going to hold quite a bit same with the stills
50
but we know how you guys like more so we're going to find a way to add more
51
as we start to get into the tail housing we're going to notice
52
that it's a lot different than any of the other zf8 speeds we've seen where they integrate the tail housing
53
and the main case all into one
54
so it takes a little bit of different work to get this apart
55
but we got it as we were disassembling this main drum we did notice
56
that it is a lot thicker than all the other zf8 speeds out there on the road
57
that are prone to braking on disassembly
58
so they're trying to make everything hold a lot more torque
59
in these trucks opening up our output carrier we're going to get into our d clutches here
60
and i'm going to be quite honest i am fully surprised
61
on how well they built these units with the zfa speed
62
all torn down i have to tell you i am very
63
impressed cummins decide to throw a transmission behind their power plant to actually hold up
64
but we're going to make some things better for you guys stay tuned for what we have coming down the pipe .
