Hi.
2
Welcome to BookPal Storyline Online.
3
My name is Isai Morales and I'll be reading Private Iguana, The Case of the Missing Chameleon by Nina Layden.
4
Cute story.
5
I was sitting at my desk when I got the call.
6
Private Iguana here,
7
I said yes I can find missing lizards a chameleon well okay why don't you come over to my office
8
and bring a photo as I hung up I wondered
9
if I should have said okay chameleons are hard to find
10
but she sounded upset
11
and I guess I'm a sucker for a lizard in distress
12
you can call me liz she said as she made herself comfortable in my office
13
here is a recent snapshot of leon he didn't come home
14
for dinner last week i had made his favorite cricket stew
15
i haven't seen him since he was acting a little strange
16
changing colors every minute he's always been the stay -at -home type
17
and well frankly boring i'm afraid he could be in trouble i puffed myself up
18
and said uh don't you worry liz if i can't find leon no one can
19
by the way i asked what color was he
20
when you last saw him quickly i made a pile of
21
posters of leon the missing chameleon not knowing what color he was i figured i'd color each poster differently
22
Too bad Leon didn't have a scar or a tattoo.
23
Then I set out to hang them up wherever I could.
24
I stopped first to check in with Officer Croker, the bullfrog chief of police.
25
Officer Croker, who had a habit of jumping to conclusions, said, A missing chameleon?
26
Well, that's a waste of time.
27
Probably pretending to be a rock.
28
I said, thanks for your help, officer.
29
Maybe I'll go talk to some boulders.
30
So I hit the dirt to see what I could dig up.
31
I plastered the forest with posters.
32
I went over fields, under rocks, and up trees.
33
I talked to turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, and a couple of skinks.
34
It was getting dark.
35
My feet were tired, my tongue was tied, and I had no clues, no tails, no trails, no Leon.
36
Maybe this chameleon had really disappeared for good.
37
But maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place.
38
I decided to head home and start again in the morning.
39
On the way, I saw a firefly -like glow in the distance by the swamp.
40
I had forgotten all about the lizard lounge.
41
It was kind of a slimy place where only the most cold -blooded reptiles hung out.
42
My head was telling me not to go there, but my stomach said, boy,
43
I sure could go for some of those greasy fried grasshoppers and a tall, cold drink.
44
So I put my stomach in charge and followed it.
45
The lizard lounge was buzzing with activity.
46
I scoped out the place, making sure not to ruffle any feathers or step on any tails.
47
I made my way to the back and sat at a table where I could keep an eye on things.
48
The menu was my first order of business.
49
I noticed that the special this week was cricket stew.
50
Hmm, it's probably just a coincidence, I thought to myself.
51
A sweet salamander sashayed over to my table.
52
I'm Sally, your waitress, she said.
53
What's a nice amphibian like you doing in a place like this?
54
I asked her.
55
When I didn't get an answer, I ordered my food.
56
I noticed a sign on the stage that said, This Week Camille and the Gila Girls.
57
I said, Hey Sally, who's this Camille?
58
Sally smiled.
59
I don't know who Camille is.
60
She just appeared out of the blue a few days ago.
61
But boy can she sing.
62
She fits right in with our house band, the Gila Girls.
63
You really should stay for the show.
64
I had nothing better to do and the fried grasshoppers were pretty tasty, so I decided to stay.
65
Soon the place got dark.
66
Everyone stopped what they were doing.
67
All eyes were on the stage.
68
The Gila Girls took their places.
69
Then a spotlight came on.
70
The curtain rustled and out slithered the most unusual chameleon I had ever seen.
71
Something about her was familiar.
72
It was like I'd seen her face somewhere before.
73
I tried to remember, but then she started to sing, and my mind went blank.
74
I was hypnotized.
75
When the show was over, Camille bowed and disappeared behind the curtain.
76
I clapped and whistled as loud as I could.
77
There was no doubt I had just seen a star.
78
I had to get an autograph.
79
Maybe it was instinct.
80
Maybe I was crazy, but here I was, sneaking around backstage at the lizard lounge, looking for her dressing room door.
81
I was so nervous I was shaking.
82
I knocked on her door and when a voice said, yes, come in, I nearly shed my skin.
83
I couldn't believe I was alone with an amazing singer.
84
I stammered, Camille, I wanted to get your autograph.
85
Could you sign this?
86
And I pulled out the first thing I could find from my pocket and handed it to her.
87
Camille looked shocked.
88
She said, how did you know?
89
What did I know, I wondered.
90
I was totally confused.
91
Then I put two and two together.
92
I knew there was something familiar about Camille.
93
By mistake, I had handed her a photo of Leon to sign.
94
Then I realized that Camille was Leon.
95
The missing Camille Leon.
96
I had hit the jackpot.
97
You know, Liz is looking for you,
98
I said she's very upset she misses you Leon took off his wig inside I miss her too
99
but I was worried Liz thought I was too boring I
100
thought she might leave me for someone more exciting I wanted to show her
101
that I had talent that I could be somebody special, maybe even a star.
102
When I heard that the Gila girls needed a new singer, I jumped at the chance to polish my act.
103
Naturally, I blended right in.
104
And so I closed the case of the missing Camille Leon.
105
Last I heard, Leon was the singing sensation of the swamp.
106
Liz watches the show and then returns to the kitchen where she's the new head chef.
107
Her cricket stew is getting rave reviews.
108
It seems that the Lizard Lounge is actually becoming a respectable place.
109
As for me, who knows what the next case will bring.
110
A frog that jumped bail, a turtle running a shell game, a poison snake.
111
Just remember, if you've got a problem, give me a call.
112
The name is Private Iguana.
113
The I stands for I'll Be Waiting. That was great.

  • "I guess I'm a sucker for a lizard in distress": La frase "I guess" (supongo) es muy usada en el inglés coloquial para expresar suposiciones.

Presta atención a:
