Welcome to Storyline Online Brought to you by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation I'm Uzo Aduba and today I'm going to read Otters vs. Badgers written and illustrated by Anya Glazer Before our story begins, there are a few things you should know.
2
Firstly, the otters live on one side of the river.
3
Secondly, the badgers live on the other side of the river.
4
Thirdly, and MOST importantly . . .
5
OTTERS AND BADGERS DO NOT GET ALONG.
6
Head otter Head badger It's just the way things had always been.
7
The badgers started it!
8
Tunneling under OUR land.
9
Badgers and otters couldn't even share the river without a fight.
10
It's the otters' fault!
11
Always splashing about - we never have any peace!
12
And it was only getting worse.
13
So, to avoid any more trouble, the leaders decided the two groups must never meet.
14
No badgers and no otters must EVER cross the river.
15
Stay away! Good riddance to them.
16
And that would be that.
17
But our story really begins with an otter named Francie.
18
The important things you need to know about Francie are: Firstly, she lives on the otter side of the river.
19
Secondly, she's a little shy.
20
Thirdly, and especially: she bakes the best cakes anywhere along the river.
21
All the otters said so.
22
This lemon meringue square is spectacular.
23
Oh, but did you try last week’s caramel shortbread?
24
My top cookie would be chocolate chip, then apple cinnamon . . .
25
Francie was happiest dreaming up recipes, finding new flavors, tasting, and testing . . .
26
. . . always in pursuit of the perfect bake.
27
And one day, when she was searching for just the right ingredient for her next creation, she went a little farther . . .
28
. . . than she meant to.
29
HEY! Before the badgers could catch her, Francie ran back to the otter side of the river and the safety of her kitchen.
30
You won’t get away with this!
31
But the badgers were just a few steps behind.
32
Head badger will want to know about this.
33
We saw her right there!
34
Ooh, a muffin!
35
You know, this is pretty good!
36
When the badgers turned up on the otter side, they demanded to see the otter with the muffins who had been stealing their berries.
37
She was sneaking onto OUR land!
38
She must pay!
39
But the otters stood firm.
40
Our Francie wouldn’t mean any harm.
41
It must have been a mistake!
42
Go back to your badger hole!
43
Can anyone else smell cake?
44
Meanwhile, back in her kitchen, Francie measured and mixed, and stretched and shaped.
45
Because no matter what trouble might be brewing . . .
46
. . . Francie always baked.
47
Francie's cookies were her best yet.
48
That zingy berry flavor is just divine.
49
What's that extra something?
50
Goodness, that was delicious.
51
Hang on! These are made with OUR berries.
52
Those are OUR berries, so we should get ALL the cookies.
53
No way! Those are otter-made cookies.
54
Well then you don't get any more berries.
55
Badgers don't even eat berries! Badgers eat worms!
56
WORM BREATH!
57
Typical ignorant otters!
58
THAT'S NOT TRUE!
59
But although she never meant for her baking to start another argument . . .
60
. . . unfortunately, it did.
61
Giant hairy slugs!
62
Lazy monochrome bears!
63
Worm breath!
64
Stripy-faced fur balls!
65
Frog feet! Rotter otter!
66
STOP! Suddenly, all eyes were on Francie.
67
Why can’t we just share it all?
68
And everyone listened to what she had to say.
69
There’s plenty of space, and berries for all of us.
70
I suppose that’s true.
71
And if we all try and get along . . .
72
We’ve never done that before.
73
Then everyone can have cookies.
74
I do want more cookies . . .
75
We could give it a try?
76
So now, this is where the otters AND the badgers live.
77
Together. On both sides of the river.
78
They still argue sometimes .
79
You’re wrong!
80
Digging is not better than fishing!
81
Yes it is ! And I’ll tell you why . . .
82
But there is one thing they ALWAYS agree on . . .
83
Francie bakes the best cookies along the whole river.
84
You know what I like about the book?
85
I like how in the beginning the badgers and the otters think that they're so different and that they can't get along, but when they come together, they realize they have something in common and that they can live together happily.
