1
Most English learners never become fluent in English not because they're lazy
2
and not because they're bad at English and even not because English is difficult.
3
In fact, The reason is much more surprising than that.
4
A few years ago, I discovered something that completely changed.
5
the way I think about language learning.
6
At first I thought it couldn't possibly be true.
7
Because if it was true,
8
it would mean that millions of people are learning English in one of the least effective ways imaginable.
9
So I started digging deeper and what I found shocked me.
10
But before I show you what I discovered, let me ask you a question.
11
Why is it that some people spend years studying English, yet freeze the moment a real conversation begins.
12
while others seem to become fluent much faster even though they study less.
13
The answer has almost nothing to do with talent and everything to do with one mistake.
14
A mistake? that nearly every English learner makes including me.
15
And once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it.
16
So What's the mistake?
17
To answer that, let me show you something interesting.
18
Imagine two English learners.
19
The first learner spends one hour every day memorizing vocabulary.
20
studying grammar doing exercises and taking notes.
21
The second learner spends that same hour watching English videos,
22
listening to stories, and consuming content that they mostly understand six months later Who do you think speaks better English?
23
Most people would say the first learner.
24
After all, they're studying harder.
25
They're working harder and they're taking English seriously.
26
But in many cases, the exact opposite happens.
27
And that's where things get interesting.
28
because The human brain.
29
doesn't learn language the way most people think it does.
30
Let me give you an example.
31
If I show you this and I say Apple you will understand instantly.
32
No translation needed.
33
Now imagine: I take a bite, say I'm eating an apple.
34
Again, You understand and then I take the apple from the bench so There is nothing here.
35
And I say, there isn't an apple.
36
Still.
37
You understand.
38
What's fascinating is that nobody explained grammar to you.
39
Nobody gave you a vocabulary list, nobody translated anything and yet your brain understood the message.
40
And that's the key word.
41
message.
42
because your brain is not designed to learn language.
43
It's designed to understand messages.
44
And that might be a small difference.
45
But it's actually the difference between people who become Fluent?
46
And people who stay stuck for years In fact, there is one statistic that completely changed my perspective on language learning.
47
When I first heard it, I thought it couldn't be true.
48
Ready?
49
To speak and understand 95 % of every day spoken English.
50
you need to know roughly 2000 of the most common words and structures in English.
51
Think about that for a second not 50 ,000 not 20 ,000 Only 2000 of the most common words and structures.
52
and that means idioms, phrasal verbs and also collocations in English.
53
So if fluency is not about learning.
54
endless vocabulary lists.
55
THEN.
56
What is it about?
57
And this is where most learners make their biggest mistake.
58
They focus on collecting words instead of understanding messages.
59
And honestly, when I realized it, everything started making sense.
60
The learners who improved the fastest weren't the ones who were the smartest or the ones who were talented.
61
And definitely not the ones who spent all day studying.
62
They were doing something else.
63
something that most learners don't do nearly enough.
64
They were getting massive amounts of understandable English every single day.
65
And that brings us to the method that completely changed the game for me.
66
And that is called comprehensible input.
67
When you understand messages repeatedly, your brain starts noticing patterns.
68
You start recognizing grammar naturally,
69
You start recognizing vocabulary naturally and you start recognizing pronunciation naturally.
70
Without trying to memorize every rule, without trying to translate, and without constantly stopping to study.
71
In other words, You start Acquiring English instead of learning English.
72
And that changes everything.
73
And at this point, some people might be thinking: "Okay, that sounds nice, but Where's the proof? fair question.
74
Because if comprehensible input is so effective, then why aren't language schools teaching English in this way?
75
Well, here is something interesting.
76
One of the most influential researchers in language acquisition Professor Stefan Krushen spent decades on studying how people learn a language.
77
And his conclusion was surprisingly simple.
78
We acquire a language.
79
when we understand messages.
80
not when we try to study grammar rules, not when we fill out grammar worksheets,
81
and not when we try to memorize words in English, just when we understand messages.
82
Think about that.
83
Every fluent speaker you've ever met spent thousands of hours reading and listening to English content before they start speaking.
84
not spending thousands of hours on learning grammar.
85
Thousands of hours? understanding messages.
86
So what should you do if you forget everything from this video.
87
try to remember these three steps.
88
Step one: spend around 20 to 30 minutes on consuming English that is understandable.
89
Not English that is too easy and not English that makes you look up every word.
90
Just English that you mostly understand.
91
You could use stories, podcasts, videos, movies, or simply you can watch my videos on YouTube.
92
In other words, anything that keeps you engaged because consistency is more important than intensity.
93
Step two, Focus on understanding messages, not on every single word.
94
A lot of members when watching videos, listening to podcasts and so on,
95
they pause after each word to translate and try to memorize that word.
96
Don't do that.
97
Allow your brain to follow the story.
98
The words that matter will repeat again and again.
99
and you will understand them.
100
And gradually, they'll become a part of your vocabulary.
101
And step three: use English.
102
Not perfectly, but regularly.
103
try to shadow sentences, talk to yourself, watch English comprehensible videos on YouTube,
104
or you can simply watch English TV shows.
105
Remember, You don't become fluent in English by waiting until you're ready.
106
you become fluent in English, by starting to use whatever you've acquired.
107
And if you do these three steps, consistently.
108
Month after month your English will improve not tomorrow night, Not next week, but It will improve.
