1
An idiot in motion will go further than a genius at rest.
2
I recently saw this quote while doomscrolling and it stopped me in my tracks because the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was true.
3
I started thinking about it in terms of audacity
4
and it made even more sense because someone can have a crazy amount of talent
5
but never do much with it if they don't respect or recognize their own worth.
6
I'm sure you've also thought this about some people who may seem to be less talented than you at a certain skill, but are publicly excelling and gaining a lot of recognition for it
7
because they decided to put themselves out there and act on their ambitions.
8
Sometimes you might think things like, I'm way better at singing or drawing or directing or skating or speaking than them,
9
so why am I not getting the same opportunities if not more?
10
And after studying the mindset and thought patterns of a lot of successful actors,
11
musicians, and artists, true long-term growth seems to start from an unwavering self-concept.
12
And by that, I mean having the courage and resilience to continuously trust in your own vision.
13
The author of The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron, also talks about how audacity is more important in succeeding as an artist than talent
14
because taking bold action and sharing your work is what actually turns a dreamer into a creator.
15
And my word of the year has been audacity.
16
It's not about talent, because I realize everybody has a talent.
17
Everybody has potential.
18
Everybody has some type of creative ability.
19
Praise God, that's you.
20
What puts an artist center stage, even Julia said in the book, what puts an artist center stage is not talent.
21
It is audacity.
22
The only thing that I really feel like I have is my talent, my skill, and my audacity.
23
And that is going to be the thing that I'm going to let guide me through this.
24
God, audacity, and my talent.
25
In my lived experience, I've learned that audacity will get you farther than talent alone ever will.
26
A lot of talented people, especially artists or creatives, have huge dreams of creating their best works and sharing them with the world,
27
but end up feeling stuck or overthinking to the point of not creating anything
28
or spreading themselves too thin across too many projects and never finishing any of them.
29
For the longest time, I've had older mentors
30
or even strangers compliment me on how talented I am or how I have a gift of art making, but it took me a long time to understand that growth requires action.
31
And the next step is actually having the audacity to invest in yourself
32
and have the courage to act on your ambitions and dreams.
33
Another way of saying this is being delusional.
34
And if that works for you, that's great.
35
But sometimes trying to be delusional still implies a sense of irrational belief in oneself.
36
So I think a better way of being delusional is simply by recognizing
37
that you can embody the identity of your ideal self starting right now without anybody's permission
38
and without having to wait for the right time.
39
Another reason to operate from a place of audacity is
40
because it helps you persist and create in spite of perfectionism and overthinking.
41
A lot of talented people are held back by the need to make everything perfect before releasing it out into the world.
42
And of course, all good things take time, but it's healthy to be able to create things without the fear of it being a perfect masterpiece.
43
Building up your audacity is like training a muscle that will also help build your tolerance for rejection.
44
You'll start to see failure or setbacks as necessary steps in the process of getting to where you want to be.
45
Any kind of change that you want to see starts in the present moment
46
and that is one of the most empowering things to realize because you can constantly edit and rewire your identity every day.
47
I hope that if anything this video helps to inspire you to trust in your creative vision
48
and to take action even when you don't feel completely ready to believe in your own work.
49
Feel free to write about what's been stopping you from taking the next steps in the comments
50
and I hope you'll join me on this journey of finding the fun and joy in creating again.

What You'll Learn

This video helps you build two key speaking skills: confident self-expression and natural pacing. The speaker’s conversational tone—mixing personal stories with reflective insights—teaches you to convey complex ideas clearly, even when discussing abstract concepts like "audacity." Additionally, you’ll practice structuring thoughts in a relatable way, a critical skill for engaging in real-world English conversations. These skills are perfect for shadow speech practice, as they focus on both content and delivery.

Listen For These Sounds

Pay attention to connected speech patterns, such as linking and reductions. For example, the phrase "an idiot in motion" often links "idiot in" into "idiotin" (with a soft "n" sound). The speaker also reduces "because" to "’cause" and "it is" to "it’s," common in casual English. These nuances are essential for understanding native speakers and sounding natural yourself. When using a shadowing app or shadowing site, slow down the audio to catch these details—they’ll make your speech flow more smoothly.

Say It Like a Native

To mirror the speaker’s rhythm and stress, focus on emphasizing key words like "audacity," "action," and "growth." The speaker uses pauses after impactful phrases (e.g., "stopped me in my tracks") to create emphasis—imitate this to build tension and engagement. Practice the shadowing technique by repeating short segments immediately after the speaker, matching their tone and pace. This helps train your mouth to form sounds naturally and your brain to process language in real time. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s to sound confident, just like the speaker does when discussing their journey. Whether you’re using a shadowing app or practicing with the video directly, consistency will help you master these patterns.

Learning English with videos like this one combines language practice with meaningful content, making it easier to stay motivated. By focusing on the skills and sounds highlighted here, you’ll not only improve your speaking but also gain the confidence to put yourself out there—just like the speaker encourages. Start small, use the shadowing technique daily, and watch your fluency grow.
