Création de la leçon...
1
Hey guys, welcome to my channel and welcome to my Porsche.
2
Today we're going to talk about vocabulary associated with driving cars
3
and I'm going to teach you words that describe the inside of the car and outside of the car.
4
So first of all, when I'm in my car, I want to start it.
5
And I started by putting my key into the ignition
6
and in this particular model i also need to press the
7
brake pedal with the brake pedal you stop the car
8
so i press the brake pedal put my key into the ignition and start the car
9
this thing is called the steering wheel and i use it to turn left
10
and to turn right this thing here is called the stick shift
11
and i use it to either park my car to drive
12
or to drive backwards the thing is this car has automatic transmission this means
13
that the speed changes automatically so what i do here i press the brake pedal again
14
and i put this stick shift into the drive mode
15
and this way when i take my leg off the brake pedal the car starts moving
16
but we're not going to move because we're going to talk about other things
17
that we can see here in the car moved a little
18
so to prevent this kind of moving there is also another brake
19
that this car has it's called emergency brake
20
and in Porsches it's right here on the left
21
but in some cars there's an additional handle that you can engage
22
and this is called emergency brake candle now everything that's right here is called the dashboard and it has different gauges.
23
So it has diesel gauge for example because this car runs on diesel.
24
It has speedometer that shows the speed.
25
It also has the screen and all the buttons so you can turn on the air conditioning, you can turn on the radio,
26
you can turn on whatever you're connecting maybe an iPhone or whatever.
27
Another thing that we have here this glass in front of me is called windshield in the US.
28
And if it's raining, there are wipers.
29
I can also use wipers just to clean my windshield.
30
This mirror is called rear view mirror and I also have a rear view camera.
31
So whenever I'm driving backwards, I can use either the rear view mirror or the rear view camera.
32
When you have a glass It's actually called a moon roof in your car.
33
So, I don't know, well, we can guess where this word is coming from.
34
Moon roof is that, is when you just lay down
35
and enjoy the moon just by being in your car and looking upwards.
36
So this is called moon roof.
37
Let's talk about something non-technical.
38
So this is a cup holder.
39
We actually have two cup holders, but we use it for hand sanitizer and for bubble gum.
40
We also have a so-called glove compartment glove compartment.
41
Again, we don't have any gloves there.
42
We have a CD, we have a face cream, and we have some documents that relate to this Porsche.
43
By the way, some Americans say Porsche, which I think is really wrong because the car is produced in Germany, and in Germany you say Porsche.
44
If you press in the middle of the steering wheel, and I'm only going to do it once because we're in a residential neighborhood.
45
Here we go.
46
This is called horn.
47
Whenever you're driving, please make sure you're wearing a seatbelt.
48
So you can wear a seatbelt.
49
The process of putting the seatbelt on is called tightening the seatbelt.
50
So with this button, you activate emergency lights and all the lights start blinking.
51
And then if you want to open the window, you press the button that is called window power and the window goes down.
52
In the same way, it goes up.
53
This thing is called a visor.
54
A visor protects driver's eyes from direct sunlight.
55
And this one also has a mirror and a light.
56
So if we want to start driving I need to press the gas pedal.
57
By the way this is the passenger seat this is the driver's seat.
58
Now let's talk a little about what we have outside of our car.
59
So here we have our door and we have the door handle that helps us open and close the door.
60
This is our side
61
mirror so if you're a driver
62
and you look at the side mirror you see what's happening
63
on the left side of your car now my car also has a car seat for the baby
64
and it's a rear facing car seat because whenever Emily's here she's facing rear
65
and for all the infants
66
and all the small babies you have to have a rear
67
facing car seat in the US this is my car's trunk
68
and I can open it by pressing this button on the key.
69
Welcome to the trunk.
70
It's actually empty.
71
I like when my car is empty.
72
I like to have a lot of free space here.
73
And I'm closing it.
74
This right here is called a license plate.
75
In California, you're required to have two license plates, one in the back and one in the front.
76
They also give us these stickers that certify that we have paid our taxes and fees this year.
77
Of course every car has four wheels.
78
We have the wheel itself.
79
This is the whole construction but the black rubber thing here is a tire.
80
Sometimes that happened to me actually three times in my life.
81
You have a flat tire so whenever you hit something with your tire
82
and it goes flat Then it's called a flat tire
83
and then you just have to go to a car shop to fix it.
84
Now here we have our gas tank.
85
So I come to the gas station, I fuel my car and I close it.
86
Every car has a lot of lights.
87
So we're going to start with a brake light this light lits whenever the car is braking.
88
We also have indicator lights that lit whenever the headlight is on.
89
I'm going to show you the headlights so they indicate that the car is here.
90
Then we have signal lights that start flashing whenever we're turning right or left.
91
Now here we also have fog lights that lit
92
when the weather conditions are poor for example when it's raining
93
or when it's snowing
94
and you want just this extra attention for people who are driving behind you here we also have exhaust pipes
95
so whenever you're driving whenever the car is activated whatever the car is producing is coming from these pipes
96
and we also have a spare tire it's in the trunk but some cars would have it here underneath.
97
Here in the front of the car we have our hood and the engine is there all the technical details are there.
98
We also have our headlights and here they have two modes.
99
We can have our headlights in the high beam mode
100
when it's very dark outside and we can't see and there is also a low beam mode.
101
In the US for example we're required to have our headlights on on the low beam mode
102
when we're driving in the evening.
103
Now here, we also have, guess the name.
104
I really like the name, because it really reminds me of a grill.
105
This is called the radiator grill.
106
Here we have a front plate and our bumper.
107
This is our fog light, and this is our turn indicator light.
108
And there is another indicator light on the side of our car.
109
Now I'm gonna lock my car with my car key.
110

Why practice speaking with this video?

Practicing English speaking skills through contextual videos, like the one focused on vocabulary related to cars, offers a real-life setting that enhances retention and understanding. By applying the shadowing technique, you can mimic the speaker’s pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm, which is crucial when preparing for situations such as the IELTS speaking practice. Engaging with vocabulary tied to driving not only broadens your lexicon but also prepares you for conversations that may occur during everyday activities, travel, or when sharing experiences with friends and family.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

The video presents several useful structures that can be employed in different speaking scenarios:

  • “I want to start it” - This structure emphasizes the speaker's intention and is useful when expressing desires or intentions.
  • “I press the brake pedal” - This sentence showcases the simple present tense, which is essential for habitual actions. It’s particularly useful when describing regular routines.
  • “This thing is called the...” - This phrase is an excellent example of how to introduce vocabulary. It can help learners describe objects and their functions during conversations, enhancing clarity.
  • “Whenever I'm driving backwards” - This structure highlights the use of present continuous tense in conditional scenarios, useful for expressing ongoing actions related to specific conditions.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice shadow speaking, it's important to pay attention to certain pronunciation challenges presented in the video:

  • “Ignition” - This word can be tricky due to its consonant clusters and the stress on the second syllable. Practice saying it in context to ensure clarity.
  • “Steering wheel” - The “w” sound may be difficult for some learners, particularly those whose first languages lack similar sounds. Focus on the positioning of your lips and tongue.
  • “Emergency brake” - Watch out for the ‘u’ sound in “emergency” as it can be pronounced incorrectly. Listening closely to the speaker will help you capture the nuances of this term.

Incorporating the vocabulary from the video into your practice sessions will not only improve your speaking skills but also enhance your overall English proficiency. Using the shadow speech approach by repeating sentences aloud after the speaker allows for muscle memory in both pronunciation and grammar. Embrace the challenge and enjoy the learning process!
