1
Hey y'all, Austin Kleon here.
2
Today I want to talk to you about a tool I cannot live without.
3
It's a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen.
4
And I've been using this for years.
5
And whenever I get sort of bombed out with my diary habit, I unleash what I call the magic of the brush here.
6
And I sort of wanted to show you how I use it in my diary.
7
So I'm gonna actually just do a diary entry today for you.
8
So These things are really.. these are so so magic.
9
So that the way that these brush pens work is they have a little
10
cartridge just like you'd have with a fountain pen.
11
They kind of look like this and then there's a like synthetic brush on the end of it.
12
And this thing, I think this is like 10 years old and it keeps a really nice point and
13
And one of the things I really like about working with the brush, I'm going to turn a light on here so you can make sure to see me well,
14
is it just gets this really nice kind of fun line.
15
Like if you press hard, you get big fat lines.
16
If you press really lightly, you get little skinny lines.
17
So you can have a lot of fun with this.
18
So when I get kind of bombed out, I just love the loose and playful nature of this.
19
And it's a Monday.
20
Sometimes I write the time.
21
But a lot of times when I start my diary, I don't really know what I'm going to write about for the day.
22
So often I'll just start drawing.
23
Like lately I've been drawing a lot of ghosts.
24
This brush is just so responsive.
25
Sometimes I'll just do a bunch of ghosts until I come up with an idea.
26
Just do-do-do-do-do.
27
I never have anything planned when I sit down with my diary.
28
I just kind of like sit down with it and just kind of let it go.
29
And this might be too messy for some people,
30
but for me there's just something really loose and freeing about the brush.
31
And this is something I learned from my hero Linda Barry, who you probably hear me talk a lot about.
32
But the big deal today is that my son Owen is turned nine years old. So, alright.
33
Owen is nine.
34
And I am feeling the feelings.
35
because it is true i am feeling the feelings today
36
and then sometimes i'll just do like there's something about you know miss linda tells us
37
that if you just kind of keep your
38
brush or your pen in motion new ideas come and
39
so i just have so much fun with this brush
40
and i don't worry about writing too much or anything like
41
that the other thing that miss linda tells us is that if you write really slowly, interesting things will come.
42
So I was somebody when I was younger, I thought free writing, you had to like write really fast and just let it all like kind of out.
43
But there's something about just going really really slowly like even
44
if you just start making an s sometimes the word will appear
45
that you need but I just you know if you just kind of concentrate on making the letters
46
and breathe in and do what Miss Linda tells us.
47
You just kind of slow down.
48
But there's just something magic about the rush.
49
There's something about slowing down and just letting things come
50
and I just I just love it it just it just really frees me up
51
so this Pentel brush pen
52
and you can do all kinds of things with this let
53
me let me find you like another entry sometimes I'll do
54
these kind of wild pages where I make like little comics
55
sometimes oh this is a drawing I'll copy a drawing from
56
my from my my six-year-old this is my idea for Muppets at Walden there's just there's a
57
but yeah I do a lot of my comics this way
58
so I heard my diaries this way
59
and I'll draw a lot of comics in there and and
60
and the words come along with them
61
but there's just something magic about the brush
62
so to tell you a little bit more about the pen like
63
so I have three of these bad boys
64
and I've never had any problems with them and they come with this little cartridge.
65
Now these cartridges do they sort of go away real quickly, like they get used up really fast.
66
So I was on YouTube the other day and I found out that if you buy a,
67
if you buy a blunt tip syringe, you can get these like anywhere really.
68
It's actually hard to buy them in person.
69
You just got to go online.
70
And a pot of ink.
71
You can actually refill these bad boys yourself.
72
So you literally just kind of like stick the...
73
Stick it in there like that.
74
And you want to use a syringe because there's nothing really this thin that will fit in these little cartridges.
75
Then you just stick the syringe in there.
76
And you can fill the cartridge back up.
77
I didn't get enough ink.
78
Just like that.
79
And then you have like a brand new cartridge
80
and then you can just unscrew the pen and just stick it right back in there.
81
And then any excess ink you just kind of squeeze back out.
82
The other really fun thing that I wanted to show you is that I discovered the other day
83
is if you have a syringe full of ink, check this out, it basically becomes a,
84
I don't know if this will work now, it becomes an airbrush.
85
So you can do these kind of crazy little ink effects here.
86
You got to be a little careful because it can get messy real quick.
87
So yeah, so I don't know when this turned into a craft channel, but anyway.
88
So the Pilot Pocket Brush Pen.
89
Love this thing.
90
and I'll put a link to it in my newsletter and below the video.
91
Anyway, happy writing and drawing and I hope this wasn't too dorky
92
and maybe it was a little bit of fun for you.
93
Bye!

To enhance your English speaking practice using Austin's techniques, follow this step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose Your Material: Start with a video or audio similar to Austin's that reflects conversational English. Utilizing shadowing apps can help you find suitable content.
  2. Initial Listening: Listen to the selected material without focusing on writing. This will help you familiarize yourself with the speaker's tone and pronunciation.
  3. Repeat After the Speaker: Use the shadow speak technique by repeating phrases immediately after the speaker. This can improve your English speaking rhythm and intonation.
  4. Focus on Difficult Phrases: Pay particular attention to phrases listed above. Practice them repeatedly until you're comfortable articulating them naturally.
  5. Slow Down: Just like Austin suggests with his brush pen technique, slow down your speaking. Concentrate on the pronunciation of each word. This will not only help you with clarity but also enhance your confidence.
  6. Write Your Thoughts: Reflect on your shadowing experience. Consider journaling your thoughts in English, allowing your creativity to flow just as Austin does in his diary.

By implementing these techniques, you'll not only improve your language skills for IELTS speaking practice but also develop a creative approach that makes learning enjoyable. Embrace the magic of the process, just as Austin emphasizes in his talk.
