1
Let me ask you a question.
2
How many of you love to win?
3
Raise your hands up, raise your hands up.
4
Man, I'm glad most of you have your hands up.
5
Some of you are way too spiritual to win.
6
You're like, there's not a Christian to win.
7
You know, you first, you first, you first, or whatever.
8
And I'll let you go with that.
9
But 1 Corinthians chapter nine tells us this.
10
Paul asked a question, don't you realize that in a race,
11
Everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize.
12
So let's say it aloud, and you can type this in the chat if you want to.
13
We are to run to win.
14
Run to win.
15
Run to win.
16
Paul didn't say, run to finish.
17
He didn't say, just run for fun.
18
He didn't say, run to try to get the participation trophy.
19
He said to run to win.
20
And to quote the famous theologian,
21
Ricky Bobby, if you ain't first, you're last.
22
It's in the Bible, run to win.
23
If scripture tells us to run to win, why does it feel like so often we're not winning?
24
Why does it feel like even like spiritually, God surely cares about our spiritual life, why does it feel so often like we're not winning spiritually?
25
We try to get close to God, we take two steps forward and it seems like we take three steps back.
26
Why does it feel like we're not winning financially?
27
No matter how hard we try, we just can't get ahead.
28
Why does it feel like for so many people that we're losing relationally?
29
All we want is some intimate and loving and trusting relationships, and yet so often our marriages or our relationship with our children struggle.
30
Why is it that we don't feel like we're overcoming in our minds?
31
We're trying to think Christ-like thoughts, and yet we battle with anxiety or worried all the time.
32
If we're supposed to win, we're supposed to run to win our race, why aren't we winning?
33
And the answer is for so many of you is because you've been trying too long.
34
You've been trying for too long.
35
It's very common, especially among Christians, to live what I call a theology of trying.
36
You'll even hear it in the words.
37
It's like, you know, I'm trying to get close to God, and I'm trying to read my Bible, and I'm trying to be consistent in praying.
38
I'm trying to be patient with my kids, but I just can't do it.
39
I'm trying to stop procrastinating.
40
I'm trying to eat better every single day, but the refrigerator pulls me at night.
41
I'm trying not to make excuses.
42
I'm trying to go to bed at a decent time, but the spirit of Netflix pulls me in.
43
Trying to start exercising, trying to get better with my money.
44
The problem for so many people is you've been trying for too long.
45
And what I wanna do today is I wanna bring a very,
46
very powerful change in perspective, straight from God's Word.
47
And I wanna try to help you change how you think about change.
48
We're talking about the power to change,
49
and we're gonna change how we think about change with the perspective that we see over and over again in God's word.
50
Now, before we look at this very important perspective change, let's review where we've been the last few weeks because we're building precept upon precept.
51
Week number one, we talked about real and lasting change.
52
What is it not?
53
Real and lasting change isn't behavior modification, it's spiritual transformation.
54
If you just change the outward behavior, but you don't let God change the heart, the behavior comes back.
55
Real change is not behavior modification, but real change is spiritual transformation.
56
And so we talked about our identity.
57
Why do you typically do what you do?
58
And the number one reason you do what you do is this.
59
Why do you do what you do?
60
You do what you do because of what you think of you.
61
It's your identity that drives your behavior.
62
And so we've been building on principles.
63
The first week we talked about our spiritual who.
64
Who do you want to be?
65
Not just who do you wanna be, but who is it that God wants you to become?
66
It's your spiritual who.
67
Then we attach to it our spiritual why.
68
Why do you wanna do it?
69
Not just you don't wanna get in shape so you're gonna look good on the beach this summer, or get good with your money so that you're gonna have more money,
70
but you wanna be better physically because your body's the temple of the Holy Spirit
71
and you wanna honor God with your body.
72
Or you wanna be better with your money, not just to be better with your money, but because you wanna be a good steward of that
73
which God entrusts to you so you can be more generous with those around you.
74
There's a spiritual why.
75
We have our spiritual who, our spiritual why, then we have our spiritual what.
76
And we talked about the habits that you wanna create to become the person that God wants you to become.
77
And we answer the question, based on who you want to become, what one habit do you need to start?
78
We have the spiritual who, the spiritual why, the spiritual what, last week we looked at the spiritual what not.
79
These are the habits that you're going to break.
80
Based on who God wants you to become, what one habit do you need to break?
81
Today we're gonna add one more thought, Next week we'll conclude.
82
We've got the spiritual who, the spiritual why, the spiritual what, the spiritual whatnot.
83
Today, we're gonna talk about the spiritual how.
84
How should we think about the power of God to change our lives, and it's gonna be a change in mindset?
85
Why do so many people continue to struggle?
86
Why do we want to change, but we just can't seem to change.
87
Why is it year over year over year over year over year, we have the same desire to be different, and year over year over year, we end up the same?
88
And the answer is because you've been trying for too long.
89
Why aren't you winning?
90
You've been trying for too long.
91
And I came to tell somebody today, here's the change in mindset,
92
I encourage you by the power of God's word to stop trying and start training.
93
To stop trying over and over and over again and to start training to become who God called you to be.
94
And what I wanna do is show you in scripture, whenever Paul wrote to the Corinthians, they would have loved this competitive metaphor.
95
When I said, who loves to win?
96
And somebody, yeah, for the glory of God, I'm gonna kick you, you know where.
97
For those of you like that, they would have understood this competitive metaphor when Paul said run to win, because Corinth was a city in Greece,
98
and every four years, Greece hosted the Olympic Games, and they would love the competition.
99
And then every two years in Corinth, they had what was known as the Isthmian Games.
100
It was like a smaller version of the Olympics, and their sports were very interesting.
101
They had chariot races, and they had boxing, and they had wrestling, and they had poetry contests.
102
Not kidding you.
103
They had wrestling and boxing and chariot races and poetry contests.
104
I don't know what that means, I have no idea.
105
But I'm guessing they're dropping a beat in the streets, busting it out, I don't know, whatever.
106
But they were much better than I am, I promise you that.
107
And so the Corinthians would have been leaning in whenever Paul asked the question,
108
don't you realize that in a race, everyone runs but only one person gets the prize?
109
So run to win.
110
Now, watch what he doesn't say.
111
He doesn't say all athletes are disciplined in their trying.
112
Notice that.
113
What did he say?
114
All athletes are disciplined in their what? In their?
115
Training.
116
In their training.
117
Stop trying and start training.
118
They do it, these athletes, they do it to win a prize that'll fade away.
119
It was literally like reef, like the reef will literally wither up and die.
120
That's what they're gonna do for this reef, of a leafy reef.
121
It's gonna fade away.
122
But we, as followers of Jesus, we do it for an eternal prize.
123
So, because we do it for the glory of God, because we train for something that's gonna last for eternity,
124
Paul said, I run with purpose in every step.
125
I'm not just shadow boxing, I discipline my body like an athlete,
126
training it to do what it should.
127
Stop trying and start training.
128
In the Olympic games, I did some research about how the athletes would train and it was incredibly intense.
129
They would go into this 10 month pre-Olympic training regimen where this very, very strict diet with absolutely no wine,
130
some of you are like, I'm out, okay?
131
And no junk food, the rest of you are like, I'm out.
132
and they would really, really watch what they put in their body.
133
Oddly enough, the runners, when they would race, they would train and they would run nude.
134
Kind of gross, but not sexual in any way.
135
They did it to show the purity of the body, and then they wanted to run with no restrictions on their body so they could actually run their race faster.
136
And so I can only imagine if I'm a runner and everybody's naked, it's gonna give me extreme motivation to get out in front very, very quickly.
137
I'm just saying, that's what I would be doing.
138
And then the wrestlers, they would wrestle in extreme temperatures.
139
And so it would get over 100 degrees in the summertime.
140
They would go out at noon at the heat of the day and wrestle so they would fight against the extreme heat.
141
And then in winter, they would go out and wrestle in the snow to fight against the extreme cold.
142
And according to two different articles that I read, Some would wrestle bulls, some horses, even lions.
143
I would go for the poetry edge and not try to be a wrestler because that's a whole nother level.
144
I got my clothes on and I'm reading poetry.
145
So, when you look at scripture and you wanna become more godly,
146
the Bible never tells you to try to be more godly.
147
The Bible never tells you to try to honor God with your faith.
148
The Bible never tells you to try to be more healthy or try to be more disciplined.
149
Instead, Scripture says, 1 Timothy 4, verse 7, instead, Paul says, train yourself to be godly.
150
Don't try, but train yourself to be godly.
151
And then he says physical training.
152
Hey, that's good and that's helpful, but training for godliness is so much better.
153
When you train for godliness, training for godliness promises benefits not only in this life, but in the one to come.
154
I like what Dallas Willard said.
155
He said, we're not trying to be different people, but we're training to be different people.
156
Somebody say, I'm not trying.
157
I'm in training.
158
Say it again, type it in the comment section.
159
I'm not trying, I'm in training.
160
Okay, so what's the difference?
161
You're like, okay, I gotcha, it's kinda good, I can tweet that, that feels good.
162
What is the difference between trying and training?
163
Let me break it down and make it really, really simple.
164
Stop trying, why?
165
Trying is an attempt to change with minimal commitment.
166
Right?
167
When you're trying, you're often like bringing a half-hearted attempt, and you've already got your excuse clause.
168
I'm trying to pray, which means you might not actually pray.
169
It gives us permission to fail because we've already just said, I'm trying, there's a way out.
170
I'm trying to read my Bible, but you're probably not.
171
I'm trying to be nice, but they weren't.
172
They drove by me and I gave them the driving finger, right? Or whatever.
173
I'm trying not to eat the whole thing, but I just did, Because trying is an attempt to change with minimal commitment.
174
Training on the other hand is a whole different mindset.
175
What is training?
176
Training is a wholehearted commitment to achieve a specific result.
177
It's an all-in commitment designed to bring about a specific result.
178
And you know the difference.
179
When you're trying, you just kinda show up and hope I'm trying to do better this time, I'm trying.
180
So when you're training, let me give you two thoughts.
181
Number one, when you're training, number one, you get the gear, don't you?
182
You get the gear.
183
If you're gonna be a runner, what do you do?
184
You buy the shoes and you buy the more expensive socks
185
that they're just there around your ankles so you'll get the runner's tan
186
and it gets your feet just better and you get the right little shorts
187
so they can see your great legs when you're running
188
and you get the watch and you might get the runner's hat
189
and the runner's glasses that are aerodynamic and you get the water bottle and you get the goo, and if you're really, really good, you get the fanny pack.
190
Because you're running so long, you need whatever's in the runner's fanny pack.
191
If you're training to be organized, you're like a massively organized person, you get the gear, don't you?
192
Some of you are nodding better than I've ever seen you before.
193
You've got the spiritual gift of organization.
194
You've got God's favorite planner, and God's favorite markers, and God's favorite pins,
195
and God's favorite stickers, and the binders and the little inserts and the washi tape.
196
I don't even know what washi tape is, but an organized person told me that everyone who's really organized knows what washi tape is.
197
What do you do?
198
You get the gear.
199
And the second thing when you're training is you create a game plan, don't you?
200
You're in training.
201
Rocky doesn't show up to fight Apollo without training.
202
He's got a game plan.
203
He plays Eye of the Tiger, and he runs with a crowd of people following him up to the top of the Capitol
204
and dances around the top of the Capitol.
205
And then he goes into some kind of snow place or some underground basement and chases chickens.
206
Because he's not trying, he's in training.
207
You get ready.
208
And so if you're in training to change to become the person that God wants you to become, You get a book about it,
209
or you watch five YouTube videos about it, or you get the app that it's about it, or the membership that's with it,
210
or you go and you find a mentor and you learn from them, or you get a trainer, you devote your time to it.
211
Everybody else says, how do you have time to it?
212
I have time for it because I have a priority to do it.
213
I'm not trying, I'm in training.
214
I'll give you an example just to show you, I'm not trying to be good on the streets.
215
I'm in training to be good on the streets.
216
For three years, I've been studying Jiu Jitsu off and on between injuries.
217
And so I have a Jiu Jitsu bag.
218
It's not a normal bag.
219
This one has a little see-through, breathy thing so the stink can get out.
220
It's a jujitsu bag.
221
And in it, I've got the hat from the place I train.
222
I got the T-shirt from the place I train.
223
I've got the rash guard.
224
It's not a regular rash guard.
225
It's a spirit-filled rash guard.
226
Iron sharpens iron, just so you know, I'll lay hands on you in the name of Jesus.
227
I've got the gi, which looks like a bathrobe.
228
I've got all the gear.
229
I've got the place where I train.
230
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
231
Any of you that roll, I got one of five.
232
Life-sherts, rash guards everywhere.
233
Why?
234
Because listen to me, I'm not trying, baby.
235
I'm in training for the glory of God.
236
I got a little bit of cauliflower ear going.
237
And if you notice me limping a little bit, it's because I got a little injury right in here, but I'm not trying, I'm in training.
238
And not only do I have the gear, I got a lot of gear, but I got a plan, I got a plan.
239
I got a couple of the best coaches around.
240
I trained with this dude named Tyler, who was a world champion brown belt, but he's not a brown belt anymore, he's a black belt.
241
But he's not a world champion black belt yet, because he's still in training to become a world champion black belt.
242
Then I got this dude who was the number one wrestler in the nation in high school.
243
Wrestled four years for OU, and is one of the baddest dudes in town.
244
He looks nice, in fact I'll show him to you because he's here at church today.
245
This is Andrew.
246
sitting next to my son, Steven, and sitting next to Jayden on the other side, and he looks nice, but don't let him fool you.
247
He's one of the fiercest guys you'll ever meet, but I'm not trying.
248
I'm in training.
249
Anybody wanna see a little video of me rolling with one of the best?
250
Let me show you.
251
This is me rolling.
252
I'm the guy in the blue shorts with the big feet.
253
I got my Life Search gear on there, right?
254
See my Life Search black thing on there?
255
That's world champion.
256
Oh, look at that, that's mean.
257
Look at him take me down.
258
Oh, oh, oh, watch out, man, watch out.
259
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, watch the tap, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, there it is.
260
Oh, come on, somebody.
261
Oh, that pastor's not trying.
262
I'm in training.
263
And so I don't know about you, but when you know who God wants you to be, you know your identity, you're not trying to become that, you're in training to become it.
264
You're not trying to get close to God, but you're in training to get close to God.
265
So when you're in training, what do you do?
266
You get the gear and you get a plan.
267
You're training to be close to God, you get the gear.
268
You get your YouVersion Bible app.
269
First thing you download, you get the gear.
270
You get your prayer app.
271
You get a book, may I recommend The Power to Change, or any great Christian book.
272
You get your Life Search T-shirt, because you've got the gear, because you're dressing for it.
273
You get a little journal so you can write down what God is showing you.
274
You take notes at church because you're not going to let this truth just come and go.
275
Look at little notes open up.
276
Right there, right there, right there, right there, right there.
277
Oh, people on the front have the notebooks because they're going to write down what God is showing them.
278
You get your worship playlist because you've got to fill your mind with the presence of God.
279
You've got to plan when you're training for godliness.
280
Your plan is to be in church.
281
Every week you're in town.
282
You're in the house of God with the people of God.
283
Hearing the word of God to strengthen you to do the will of God.
284
And you're serving somewhere because we are the people of God
285
and we're served and we all have gifts to serve in the body of Christ.
286
So we're not just going to church, but we are the church.
287
And so you're serving in Life Kids, or you're driving a golf cart, or you're an usher, or you're on the host team, or you're leading in some form or fashion because you've got a plan to do it.
288
And you're praying daily.
289
And you've got your study Bible, you're studying the Bible.
290
When you're trying, you give up if it gets too hard.
291
when you don't feel like it.
292
But when you're training, you don't just act according to your feelings, you act according to your commitment.
293
When you're an athlete, when you're a competitor, when you're a disciple of Jesus fighting for something that matters,
294
when you've got a vision or a goal or a dream, trying apart from training is unthinkable.
295
We're not just trying to be godly, We're training ourselves to serve God in every bit of life.
296
It's a change in our mindset.
297
And so this is what Paul says, don't miss it.
298
He says, so I run with purpose in every step.
299
Purpose, direct me God.
300
Show me your will.
301
Show me who to love.
302
Show me where to give.
303
I've got purpose in every single step.
304
I'm not just shadow boxing.
305
I discipline my body, watch this, like an athlete.
306
It's the who, it's the identity.
307
Like an athlete, training it to do what it should.
308
Is your body your master?
309
Or is the power of God through you stronger than the wrong desires in you?
310
I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should do.
311
I'm not trying.
312
I'm in training.
313
I got the gear.
314
I got a plan.
315
I'm training it.
316
Now, when I'm trying, I'm hoping to be something that I'm not yet.
317
I'm gonna try to do jizitsu.
318
I'm 55 years old, kinda old.
319
Andrew calls me the old man.
320
I'm gonna try to show up and hang in there with those young bucks.
321
I'm gonna try.
322
No, listen, when you're in training, you're getting better at what you already are.
323
I'm a warrior in training.
324
We're not trying, we're in training.
325
So how does this play out?
326
You're not trying to save your marriage.
327
Believe that you're a great marriage in training.
328
What do you do?
329
You get the gear, whatever it is.
330
It's the matching t-shirts.
331
Oh, that's cheesy, but that's what cheesy couples do.
332
And you get in counseling, and you start serving together.
333
And you pray together when you'd rather cuss at each other.
334
but you're a great marriage in training.
335
You're not trying to be a better friend.
336
You're a good friend in training.
337
You're generous and you're running with the right people
338
and you're building them up with the right words and you're showing back up.
339
And even if they don't do the right thing, you don't care because you're telling yourself, tell them a friend loves like a brother, I'm gonna continue to love him.
340
You're not trying to become more popular.
341
I'm trying to build my brand.
342
You are a godly influence in training to lead other people.
343
You are the light shining into the darkness and Jesus is making your light all the brighter.
344
So every week there's a goal and every week there's a question.
345
What's the question for this week?
346
Let me set it up.
347
You aren't trying to become something that you're not.
348
You're in training to become who God already sees that you are.
349
So here's the question.
350
Don't miss this.
351
This is a game changer for some of you.
352
Based on who you wanna become, how are you gonna train?
353
There it is.
354
Based on who you wanna become, how are you gonna train?
355
You're gonna get the gear, you're gonna get a plan, because you're not trying.
356
You're in training.
357
If you don't know the difference of belts in Jiu Jitsu, if you don't know what Jiu Jitsu is, if you watch MMA when they go to the ground, That's Jiu Jitsu for the most part.
358
In the belts, they start white, and then they go blue, and then they go purple, then they go brown, then they go black.
359
And I got the extremes here.
360
I've got white, and I've got black.
361
My coach asked me, what's the hardest belt to get?
362
And the obvious answer is black.
363
And he said, no, the hardest belt to get is white, because most people never start.
364
You gotta start.
365
Then he asked me, what is a black belt?
366
And I said, somebody you run from.
367
Which is true, believe me, believe me.
368
A brown belt, a purple belt, a good blue belt, run.
369
I promise you.
370
What's a black belt?
371
He said, it's a white belt.
372
It never stops training.
373
Never stops training.
374
Here's what you know, like, I'm not trying.
375
Look at my eyes.
376
I'm in training.
377
I'm not trying to reach more people.
378
I'm in training for godliness.
379
I'm training.
380
I wake up every day with a vision, a purpose.
381
I know who God has called me to become.
382
I've got my spiritual why.
383
I've got my spiritual what.
384
Here's the habits.
385
I'm starting to become more who God says I am.
386
I've got the things I'm breaking to get those out of my life
387
so that I can rid myself of the things keeping me from being who God wants me to become.
388
And I know what to do, how to train, to become more of who God already says that I am.
389
I'm trying, I'm in training.
390
Now, just to be fair to Andrew, I wanna show you this video again, and I want you to watch really carefully, because you can see something really, really cool.
391
You're gonna see how good I am.
392
Andrew about breaks my leg right there, takes me down.
393
Now, once you watch, he notices he's in trouble.
394
Watch his face, what's he doing right there?
395
He's smiling, right?
396
Why is he smiling?
397
Why is he smiling?
398
Because he's happy for me. Because that never happens.
399
That never happens.
400
We're talking in three years, that's happened two times.
401
So our record is 3,942 verses two.
402
That's where we stand.
403
And both two times, he was not going his hardest.
404
Why? because he was training me, mentoring me to become more of what I am.
405
So I'm not winning whenever I'm submitting world-class champions
406
that are letting me do that once every year and a half or so.
407
I'm winning when I show up and train.
408
And you're not winning when you hit some goal in the future.
409
You're winning when you show up and train for righteousness today.
410
So I want you to feel it.
411
Just say it, just say it where you are.
412
You can type it in the chat.
413
I'm not trying, just say it.
414
Wipe that word from your vocabulary.
415
I'm not trying, what are you?
416
I'm in training, I'm in training.
417
I'm in training to become who God has created me to be to be.
418
So, based on who you wanna become, what are you gonna do to train?
419
Get the gear, get the plan, show up, and let God empower you to be more of who he already says you are.
420
Because you're not trying to be something else, you're in training to become the person he created you to be.
421
So God, we ask that you would do it today.
422
I pray God today would be a turning point for so many people.
423
God, we wanna change, we've tried to change, but we've failed.
424
God, change our mindset about how we change.
425
God, give us a clear picture of who you want us to be, our spiritual who.
426
God, drive deep into our heart, our spiritual why, why you want us to become this.
427
God, give us our spiritual what?
428
The habits to start, our spiritual what not?
429
The habit to break.
430
God, give us the how.
431
We're not trying, we're in training.
432
I pray God that there would be people there that would just step across that line.
433
I'm not trying, I'm done trying.
434
I'm in training.
435
May have some bad days, may miss a day of training, but when you're in training, you show back up.
436
God, help us to become, help us to train for righteousness.
437
Help us to train for godliness.
438
Help us to train to become who you want us to become.
439
As you keep praying today, nobody looking around.
440
What I want you to hear very clearly, some of you say like, yeah, I'm not anywhere close to righteousness.
441
I'm not close to God.
442
God didn't just try to show you his love, but he demonstrated it.
443
Scripture says that he demonstrated his love for you and for all of us that while we were still sinning, while we were living unrighteously,
444
Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins.
445
Who is Jesus?
446
He is the perfect and sinless Son of God.
447
He's God in the flesh, who lived a life perfect in every single way.
448
He's called the Lamb of God, who is without spot or blemish because he was holy through and through.
449
And because he was perfect, He was the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.
450
He died in our place.
451
And by the goodness of God, God raised him three days later from the dead.
452
So that anyone, this includes you, doesn't matter how bad your life is, doesn't matter how far from God you feel, anyone who calls on that name, the name that is above every name,
453
it is the name of Jesus, the Son of God.
454
Whoever calls on him, your sins will be forgiven, and you would be made completely brand new.
455
Wherever you're watching from today, You may know you're not in a relationship with God.
456
You may feel guilty and dirty about your sin.
457
You may feel ashamed of something that you've done.
458
When you call on his name, God makes you new.
459
The old is gone and everything becomes new.
460
Many of you, you're here today, you're watching.
461
It's not an accident because by the power of God, he's bringing his love to you.
462
You say, I need his forgiveness.
463
I need his grace.
464
We're stepping away from our old life.
465
We're stepping into his love.
466
We're calling on the name of Jesus.
467
When you do, he hears your prayers, he forgives your sins and he makes you new.
468
Today, those who say, I need that, I want that, I need his forgiveness by faith.
469
I give my life to Jesus, that's your prayer.
470
Lift your hands high now, all over the place.
471
Lift them up and say yes.
472
Both of you right there, praise God for you.
473
Start right there.
474
Others today saying, yes, Jesus, I need your forgiveness.
475
Lift your hands high and say yes.
476
Right back over here, right over there as well.
477
Praise God if you come on somebody, let's tell God thank you online.
478
You guys just type it in the comment section, I'm surrendering my life to Jesus.
479
And right now we're not trying to get to know God.
480
We're by faith calling on him.
481
Would you all pray aloud?
482
Pray, Heavenly Father, I give you my life.
483
Forgive all of my sins.
484
Jesus, save me.
485
Fill me with your Holy Spirit so I can know you and serve you and do your will.
486
Show me God who you want me to be.
487
I'll train to be it.
488
I'll show your love in all that I do.
489
Thank you for new life.
490
You have all of mine.
491
In Jesus' name I pray.
492
Church, somebody worship God right now.
493
Give God thanks, give him praise.
494
Come on church, let's tell him thank you for who he is.
495
He's moving in this place, he's moving in this place.
496
Give God praise and glory today.
