Pratica di Shadowing: It Only Takes Two Weeks - Impara a parlare inglese con i video

1
I'm just going to get right to the point
2
because I want to keep this video short and then I'll explain my point.
3
The point is this.
4
If you're in a classroom.
5
And there are people in your class.
6
And you feel like.
7
You are behind those people.
8
You feel like there is no way that you could become as good as they are.
9
then the point is that it only takes two weeks.
10
Two weeks.
11
You could do it in two weeks.
12
And so let me explain this because this was actually a comment
13
that someone made in a room I was in many years ago.
14
There was this math professor who I didn't really know and he was talking to a student who I didn't really know.
15
And the conversation went something like this.
16
The student was feeling like, you know, they were behind and the professor was saying, well, you know, when students feel that way,
17
you know, I always tell them, you know, really only two weeks behind.
18
You might think that you can't catch up to them.
19
You might think that you can't be as good as they are.
20
You might think that you can't improve your mathematics to get to the level where they are
21
because they're succeeding and maybe you're not.
22
But the reality is it only takes two weeks.
23
And so I left the room and I thought about it.
24
And it didn't make any sense.
25
I mean, how is this guy going to know that it only takes two weeks?
26
Because different people are at different levels.
27
So how does this comment make any sense at all?
28
You know, people say things all the time.
29
So why is this true?
30
And so here's the rationale.
31
When you are in a classroom in college, and I'll just use the US as an example, but it's probably true in most places in the world.
32
If you're in a classroom, there's usually some requirement that is needed for you to be there.
33
For example, in the US, when you go to college, you take some entrance exam and they place you in a class.
34
They say, OK, you can go into college algebra.
35
OK, you're really good at math.
36
We can put you in calculus.
37
There's a placement test and people always criticize these tests and they criticize the system and that's fine.
38
You can criticize it
39
But there exists some sort of placement where people are put into classrooms doesn't have to be perfect
40
But there is a system and so by some sense Everyone in that class is somehow supposed to be equal, but we all know that's not true, right?
41
Different people have different abilities Different talents different intellects,
42
but the system puts us all in this place And so the rationale is that if you work hard enough,
43
within two weeks, you should be able to catch up.
44
And I agree.
45
I think it's possible.
46
I think it's possible now.
47
After years of just reflecting on the statement and thinking it was just bogus, I think you can do it.
48
Because think about it.
49
Everyone is roughly equal.
50
If I think of all the students that I've had in all the classes I've ever taught, and I think about some of the worst students,
51
like the students that they were just really bad, and had some that had really, really bad issues with math, some that were just not very good,
52
and then I look at the best students.
53
could these students who were really bad actually catch up
54
and you know get the same grade on the test as
55
one of the good students absolutely yes absolutely definitely 100 i know
56
because i would make the tests i know that
57
if they knew x y
58
and z they could get a 100 on the test you know
59
and i would go over stuff in class and i would teach everything and explain everything so in theory
60
if they could learn everything I was teaching they could get a 100% every single time.
61
They just actually had to learn it which takes a lot of effort and a lot of time.
62
And for some people learning those things is actually going to take more time because they're so behind.
63
But you could do it in two weeks you could definitely do it in fact it might even take a week.
64
The real question is you know how bad do you want it?
65
Especially if you're in a situation where your math is really bad.
66
Let's use let's use algebra as an example.
67
Let's say you're really bad at algebra and you're trying to get better
68
and you're in a class and you're not doing well.
69
Right.
70
And there's people in your class that are doing well.
71
Well, maybe they had algebra before in high school.
72
Maybe they, you know, they saw it before.
73
Maybe their parents are math teachers, whatever.
74
The only thing you can do in situations like that is just work harder and really just grind.
75
You have to grind and grind and grind and you can do it.
76
So I just wanted to make this short video to indicate that I think it's possible.
77
I really do.
78
I think that if you're in a classroom and you're in a bad situation and you're not doing well,
79
you can pull yourself out of that situation if you work really hard and you just have to grind.
80
One idea is to just do every single homework problem multiple times.
81
This is what I did.
82
I was obsessed.
83
I would do so many math problems.
84
And that's all I did.
85
On weekends, too.
86
People would go to school, they'd do their homework, they'd finish it, they'd go out with their friends.
87
No, I didn't do that.
88
I didn't do that.
89
I just stayed home on weekends and studied.
90
Studied every afternoon after class.
91
It's about how bad you want it. So it's possible.
92
So if you're in a class and you're failing and you're thinking, oh, can I still pass?
93
Don't think that way.
94
It's not about passing.
95
It's about getting 100.
96
Aim to be the best.
97
Aim to score a perfect score because if you aim high and you miss, you're probably still going to do pretty well.
98
Two weeks, right?
99
Two weeks is all it takes.
100
You really can do it.
101
You really can do it.
102
And I thought about this guy's comment for years because I was thinking two weeks.
103
It doesn't make sense from the perspective of, okay, you might have this friend who's in another math class.
104
Like, say you're in algebra and your friend is in calculus three.
105
No, you're not going to be able to catch up to him in two weeks, right?
106
But if you're in the same class
107
and you're comparing yourself to another student in your class and that student is getting As and you're getting Fs,
108
you can actually rise from the ashes and do better and get an A on the next test.
109
I've seen people do it.
110
They completely change their study habits.
111
They go from not taking notes, skipping class, to going to class every day, asking questions, doing all the homework,
112
going to office hours, asking questions multiple times.
113
Don't be afraid to be annoying.
114
A lot of students, I feel like they're lost in class and they're scared to ask questions.
115
I used to be that way.
116
Don't be like me, right?
117
It's funny, I'm telling you not to be like I was, but it's good advice because that's something that I should have done.
118
Do I have regrets?
119
No, because I don't believe in regrets.
120
Regrets accomplish nothing.
121
All you can do is change the present and hope that it affects your future.
122
Because that's all we have control over is the present.
123
So it's possible.
124
It's possible.
125
Pick yourself up and work harder.
126
You could do it.
127
I mean, you could do it.
128
It's mathematics and it applies to other subjects as well, but I have more experience with math, so I'm speaking only here of mathematics.
129
In mathematics, you know, if you're in an algebra class or a trig class, and let's say you're using this book here, Fundamentals of Algebra and Trig by Swachowski, great book.
130
You know, pick up the book.
131
Do all the problems from this section.
132
Do all the homework.
133
Go over all of your notes.
134
You're gonna get better.
135
You're gonna get better.
136
It's possible.
137
It just takes extra work, and it's about how bad do you want it.
138
It really comes down to that.
139
So you should know that deep down inside you can do it.
140
It's just a matter of do you want to do it.
141
A lot of times I think that people think they can't do it, And I believe they can.
142
It's just, do they really want to?
143
Do you really want to spend that much time doing math?
144
I mean, there's other things in life that are important too, right?
145
But if it matters to you, you can make the effort and you can succeed.
146
And that's all I wanted to say in this video.
147
I believe in the two-week rule.
148
Two weeks.
149
In two weeks, you can catch up to a classmate if you rock it.
150
I think that mathematician who said that, I remember his name, but I won't mention it and I talked to him once briefly and that's no comment.
151
I didn't really know him, so but he was right.
152
I believe what he said, he was a smart man and he was right.
153
If you want to learn mathematics, I do have courses.
154

155
They're actually on the Udemy site.

157
and it's possible.
158
It's possible.
159
It really is.
160
I want to emphasize that I believe that you can do it.
161
If you are failing your class, just from teaching so many years, it took me a long time to believe this guy.
162
I was like, two weeks?
163
But he was talking about people in the same class.
164
So if you're in the same class with someone and you're comparing yourself and you want to get the grades they're getting, I really think it's possible to catch up in two weeks.
165
I think that's more than enough time.
166
A week, maybe.
167
Two weeks, I think that's a lot more realistic.
168
To catch up to them and do as well as they're doing, I think it's possible.
169
Anyways, until next time, good luck, take care, and keep doing mathematics.

  • "I'm just going to get right to the point": Espressione utile per iniziare direttamente il discorso. In italiano: "Voglio passare subito al punto". Usa questa frase per essere chiaro e conciso nelle conversazioni.
  • "You might think that you can't catch up": Struttura con "might" per esprimere una supposizione. "Might" è meno forte di "may" e si usa per parlare di possibilità dubbie. Ecco un esempio: "She might be late" (Lei potrebbe arrivare tardi).
  • "It only takes two weeks": Costruzione con "it takes" per indicare il tempo necessario. Ricorda che "it takes + tempo + to + verbo" è una formula base: "It takes me an hour to cook dinner" (Mi ci vuole un'ora per cucinare la cena).

Trappole comuni di pronuncia

Nel video, alcuni termini possono creare difficoltà. Ecco le più comuni:

  • "Catch up": La pronuncia di "catch" (kætʃ) e "up" (ʌp) insieme può sembrare "kætʃʌp" (come la salsa ketchup!). Presta attenzione a non confondere i suoni: "catch up" significa "riprendere il passo".
Usa "bogus" per esprimere dubbio: "That idea is bogus" (Quell'idea è senza senso).
