1
What's my advice for new content creators starting out this year?
2
Firstly, life becomes a lot easier when you have some sort of monetization vehicle attached to your content from day one.
3
If you care about making money, it is very unlikely that you'll make money quickly from just doing content.
4
But if you had some kind of business where you were offering a valuable service
5
or product to someone in return for money, and then your content is a lead generation driver for the business, then your content becomes a lot more sustainable
6
because you're making money from day one rather than just plowing money
7
and time and effort into it and not seeing a return.
8
When I started my YouTube channel, I actually had a courses business where I was teaching kids how to get into med school.
9
Even though I was only getting like 10, 20, 30 views on my videos, some small percentage of those were still converting into sales.
10
And so I was almost making money from day one, which is definitely a thing that made the journey feel much more sustainable early on.
11
The second thing is it sounds cliche, but focus on enjoying the process.
12
If you are enjoying it, that is what creates the sustainable energy to make it sustainable over time.
13
And the only way to succeed in content is to do it for long enough to see success.
14
The reason why it's hard is
15
because most people quit way before they see any kind of success
16
because they're just not playing the long game
17
and enjoying it is the surest fire hack for actually being able to play the long game.
18
And the third thing I would say is train the muscle of underthinking.
19
I suspect if you ask that question, if you're watching this, you're probably prone to overthinking.
20
I met someone the other day who's starting a business
21
and has been agonizing for about six months about her very first Instagram post.
22
She has like three followers and she's spent six months agonizing about one post on Instagram.
23
It's almost as if she's like, man, as long as I just get that one post right, then that will be the thing that makes or breaks my career.
24
And it's like, obviously not.
25
Like look at anyone who's big on Instagram.
26
They've got thousands, tens of thousands of posts.
27
You don't even see them because of the algorithm and stuff.
28
So like developing the muscle of under thinking
29
and just doing stuff without thinking too hard about it is a real asset as a content creator, especially when you're just getting started.
