Today I'm going to take you guys with me behind the scenes of a diagnostic angiogram.

This is how we do here at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

So first, I change into scrubs and put on my surgical cap and mask.

Then I gear up with my lat apron for protection, scrub in, and join the team in the procedure room for us to begin the case.

We begin the procedure by inserting a catheter through the patient's arm

and then we guide the catheter all the way up to the neck vessels using live imaging, which is basically x-ray, and from there we will inject contrast dye

which will light up all the vessels in the brain and the neck.

So that way we can diagnose what type of disease the patient has, if it's an aneurysm or a stovascular malformation and narrowing out the brain vessel or the neck vessel.

So by using the state-of-the-art computers and machines that we have here at Riverside,

we are able to obtain three-dimensional images that will help us diagnosing and planning for the treatment of the diseases.

Since it's a minimally invasive procedure, we're able to remove the catheter, finish the procedure and go home on the same day.
