Shadowing Practice: Behind the Scenes: Diagnostic Angiogram with Dr. Oliveira | Riverside Neuroscience - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Hey, I'm Dr. Renato Oliveira.
2
Today I'm going to take you guys with me behind the scenes of a diagnostic angiogram.
3
This is how we do here at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
4
So first, I change into scrubs and put on my surgical cap and mask.
5
Then I gear up with my lat apron for protection, scrub in, and join the team in the procedure room for us to begin the case.
6
We begin the procedure by inserting a catheter through the patient's arm
7
and then we guide the catheter all the way up to the neck vessels using live imaging, which is basically x-ray, and from there we will inject contrast dye
8
which will light up all the vessels in the brain and the neck.
9
So that way we can diagnose what type of disease the patient has, if it's an aneurysm or a stovascular malformation and narrowing out the brain vessel or the neck vessel.
10
So by using the state-of-the-art computers and machines that we have here at Riverside,
11
we are able to obtain three-dimensional images that will help us diagnosing and planning for the treatment of the diseases.
12
Since it's a minimally invasive procedure, we're able to remove the catheter, finish the procedure and go home on the same day.

Why This Video Is Perfect for English Speaking Practice

If you’re looking to improve English pronunciation and learn real-world language, this behind-the-scenes medical video is a goldmine. The dialogue is clear, conversational, and packed with practical phrases—perfect for shadow speak (repeating aloud while mimicking tone and rhythm). Dr. Oliveira’s explanations are slow enough for beginners but natural enough to sound like everyday speech, making it easy to pick up new vocabulary and flow.

Breaking Down Natural English: 3 Key Phrases

  • “I’m going to take you guys with me behind the scenes”: The casual “you guys” and phrasal verb “take with me” make this sound friendly and approachable. Notice how “behind the scenes” is a common idiom—great for adding flair to your speech.
  • “We begin the procedure by inserting a catheter through the patient's arm”: The structure “begin by [verb-ing]” is essential for explaining steps. The clear, direct wording helps you practice enunciating medical terms (like “catheter”) without losing fluency.
  • “Since it's a minimally invasive procedure, we're able to remove the catheter”: The conjunction “since” smoothly connects a reason to a result. This sentence teaches you how to link ideas naturally, a skill that boosts confidence in everyday conversations.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
