1
So...
2
I messed up.
3
My final year university dissertation is due in a week and I'm currently on...
4
zero words.
5
So I currently have seven days to write 12 ,000 words.
6
12 ,000!
7
This is a disaster.
8
I would love to say I didn't see this coming but like...
9
I think we all did.
10
It is very much not ideal.
11
I am dumb.
12
I'm stupid.
13
I'm a fool and you know what?
14
I know that so I You don't need to tell me that, I already know that.
15
I guess I should explain.
16
So basically I started reading for my dissertation last summer.
17
I then started doing like proper research in like November kind of time, confirmed my final title in December, had a few meetings with my supervisor,
18
wrote a 3 ,000 word draft which I could then show my supervisor
19
and he could give me feedback on it and the feedback that he gave me was a This is just rubbish.
20
As in like, he said it in a nice way, but the general vibe that I got was like, scrap what you've written so far.
21
So that was like a month ago.
22
I went back to the drawing board and started again from scratch.
23
Even though that sounds bad, I think it was genuinely the most helpful thing to happen
24
because I kind of had to re -evaluate my whole argument and I came up with something so much better.
25
Did a load more extra research, was ready to start writing again, and then the world sort of just fell apart.
26
The coronavirus pandemic happened.
27
And so now, I'm not a university.
28
I'm at home.
29
It's been very disorientating and confusing.
30
I find it so hard to work at home.
31
Like it fully feels like the summer holidays.
32
And it is absolutely not.
33
So to conclude, I am a clown and it is now crunch time, like I very much need to get my head in the books and write this damn essay.
34
And obviously when I'm having a breakdown the first thing I do is.. is turn on the camera, so welcome!
35
Welcome to a chaotic vlog.
36
Let's get this damn dissertation done.
37
On tonight's program, ladies and gentlemen, we have something that's gonna make you sick.
38
You know how when you start a major project like this, they, in the introductory lectures, they always say to you like, "There's always someone who leaves it to the last minute.
39
Don't be that guy." And there's like articles in the tab being like, "This person wrote their dissertation the night before." always think to yourself, like, how could that possibly happen?
40
How could you ever be that guy?
41
I am that guy.
42
That is literally me.
43
I am that guy.
44
I can't believe it.
45
Well, No, I kind of can believe it, but like I'm still disappointed, you know?
46
So anyway, here we are.
47
Let's try and get some dissertation written, huh?
48
I say that if we have a choice, like we literally, there is no choice here.
49
Like I said, I have actually done all my planning already.
50
So in fact, I've done kind of like excessive planning.
51
There is so much planning here.
52
If you've watched this channel, you've heard me bang on about this before, but I make these research logs.
53
So I have source, quote, page numbers, publishing information, and then room to add extra notes.
54
These are all then
55
the colours and notes that I make on the paper once I've printed out
56
because I find it easier to sort of analyse once it's all printed out
57
back into the original document that's on my laptop then break it down so that each colour kind of corresponds to, well in this case they each correspond to a chapter and
58
so I basically have a full plan and all of my research done for every chapter.
59
It's just a case of of writing it.
60
So the issue I'm having is making these ideas that I have, because trust me, I've thought about this a lot, it may not seem that way because of the terrible disorganisation that is going on here.
61
But genuinely, I feel like I've got quite a strong argument to put forward.
62
It's just...
63
executing it.
64
The struggle that I'm currently having is getting those ideas from here
65
down to the paper without them becoming crap in the meantime and that is proving to be quite an issue.
66
I can't I can't lie to you.
67
Okay, so I've actually been kind of productive today.
68
I don't even recognize myself.
69
I've actually got 1750 words written today.
70
Would you Adam and Eve it or Adam and Steve it or Adam and whoever you want it?
71
So even after just one day of really Really working towards it.
72
I actually do feel a lot better about it.
73
So here's hoping that tomorrow is...
74
just as productive.
75
Goodnight friends.
76
Just getting out of my one piece of state regulated exercise.
77
My dog has somehow managed to train himself to always poop right next to the poo bin, so that's very handy.
78
Me submitting my dissertation.
79
Well, hello!
80
It's Sunday today and the update is that it's going f*ing terribly.
81
Basically, you know how yesterday I was feeling quite chuffed
82
and smug and confident in the fact that I had quite a successful day?
83
Well, I read everything back that I wrote yesterday and...
84
I hate it.
85
I absolutely...
86
Hate it! So, yeah.
87
Um, where do we go from here?
88
The essence of what I was saying is right, but the way I was phrasing it and putting it into prose was just...
89
not good.
90
So basically I'm having a mare, a Western super mare.
91
But what I've done is I've started a brand new document next to the one I originally had
92
and I'm just retyping everything from scratch and I am actually finding that it's quite
93
useful because I'm not being protective over what I've already written because it's there and it's saved.
94
So I'm being a lot more experimental and just rewriting things once I already have the idea, sort of, written down in prose anyway and it's actually making a lot more sense.
95
So obviously I will keep you in the loop.
96
At the moment it's not going well, but you know what?
97
It's a marathon, not a sprint.
98
We'll get there.
99
Hello, I'm wrapping up the day now because it's a Sunday, the day of rest.
100
I have actually gone backwards somehow, and I've ended up with less words today than I had yesterday.
101
But I thought I should quickly clarify one thing, and that is that I have basically done extensive planning before this week.
102
And this is just a case of turning my bullet -pointed plan into sentences, like full sentences, and turning it into 12 ,000 words.
103
So at the moment.
104
I'm not doing it all from scratch.
105
I'm just writing it up, but it's still hella stressful.
106
Hey guys, it's me.
107
Still.
108
I know that in the context of this video, not a lot of time has passed, but actually It's the evening,
109
it is Monday evening, basically today I just had to get something done, I had to be productive today and try
110
Emphasis on try to get myself back on track because I was behind on being behind.
111
So this morning I locked away my camera, my phone, anything that could possibly distract me.
112
I blocked all social media on my laptop from 9 :00 until 6 :00 and I've been so Freakin productive.
113
Thank the Lord.
114
So far today.
115
I've actually written 4 ,000 words
116
which is a relief more than anything like I needed a day like this to get myself somewhere.
117
I am satisfied with how much I've done today but still stressed.
118
I just feel like a damn fool.
119
I feel so stupid for leaving it this late and...
120
It's not smart, it's not clever, it's not cool, it is stupid.
121
It's a dumb thing to have done, but here we are.
122
So I just had some dinner, had some time away from my laptop, and it's now 8pm.
123
and I'm gonna try and do a little bit extra tonight to hopefully hopefully get to the halfway point.
124
We shall see.
125
Whoa!
126
We're halfway there!
127
Whoa!
128
I'm...
129
Still.. kind of scared.
130
I am in bed now to rest my weary head, but I'm going to be sleeping well tonight and deservedly so because
131
Today was a good day, so.. a little pat on the back for me.
132
Getting some sleep is definitely the most important thing right now because I am going brain dead.
133
So I will catch up with you party people in the morning!
134
Day 4 in the Big Brother house.
135
Jack is still having a bloody nightmare.
136
So good morning.
137
It's Tuesday today and today needs to be a productive day because yesterday was actually quite successful.
138
So if I can somehow replicate that today, Thank you, Jesus.
139
In an ideal dream world, today I will write another 4 ,000 words.
140
Whether that happens or not, that's a bit beyond me.
141
But you know what, we're trying and that's fine.
142
No, actually we need a bit more than that.
143
I am kind of in need of a miracle.
144
at this stage, but I'm holding out hope.
145
I've managed like 1 ,500 words, so not the worst, but not the best either.
146
It's kind of funny actually because
147
when I f - actually nothing about this is funny but
148
when I first started researching for my dissertation I was like wow imagine if this got published, like how cool would that be?
149
Now I'm like Imagine if I finish this in time.
150
How cool would that be?
151
You know, as time goes on, priorities just change and expectations get Lower.
152
Okay, so I have actually made it to 8 ,250 words, which If you saw that coming, you are the only one.
153
I am surprised, but this is pretty good progress.
154
My brain hurts, but it is like half past ten, so I'm going to put some music on,
155
go through the thesis that I've written so far and reference.
156
So I'm going to go through and add in all of my footnotes.
157
and in -text citations, which sounds riveting because it doesn't really require too much brain power.
158
And that is pretty much all I'm capable of doing right now.
159
Normally I would leave doing my referencing and bibliography to the last minute, but it kind of was the last minute.
160
Like, this whole thing is last minute.
161
So I had to do it a bit in advance so
162
that I wasn't doing it at 3 p .m on deadline day.
163
I've got a little friend who's come to join me.
164
Yeah, I felt that.
165
I then carried on working until like 3 :00 a .m.
166
I was just getting all my referencing done, which is so confusing and complex.
167
We used the MHRA system, which was just boggling my brain.
168
Okay, it is 3 :00 a .m.
169
Even the dog has left me, so...
170
It's not good, it's bad.
171
Oh my God.
172
Just the worst.
173
Hello and happy April Fool's Day.
174
It is April and I'm a fool so there we go.
175
I have probably said this every day in this video so far, but today really needs to be a productive day.
176
There's a chance, albeit slim, that I could finish my final chapter today.
177
I've got 3 ,500 words left.
178
So if I could write a 3 ,000 word chapter then I just have my conclusion to write tomorrow, which would be...
179
That would be a real development.
180
So let's get going.
181
My final chapter is on a single man, which is actually the book that inspired me to write my dissertation on this topic in the first place.
182
So Hopefully this should be quite a good one to kind of end on.
183
Okay, so just as a little Thursday night update wait Is it Thursday today?
184
No. Oh my god, it's Wednesday Jesus I just scared the shit out of myself.
185
Anyway, basically the update is that I've been working all day
186
But I kind of was in a position where I needed to sort of re -evaluate a few things
187
and go back to the drawing board and Start planning again.
188
I haven't started again from scratch.
189
Don't worry I was writing my third and final chapter
190
which obviously needs to kind of start to wrap things up and I need to use the things I haven't yet, but it just needed a bit of extra planning
191
so I actually think today has been beneficial even though I haven't necessarily got that many words on paper.
192
The deadline is Friday.
193
3pm so we are cutting it a little bit fine, but you know what that's fine because I love me some danger. Do I?
194
No, no I actually don't.
195
That is not true at all.
196
I hate danger, let's cut it out.
197
Yeah, so signing out for Wednesday.
198
because it's Wednesday today and I will see you tomorrow.
199
Hello, today is Thursday.
200
Does anyone actually care at this point
201
or are you sick of me complaining about something
202
which is literally my fault because I am sick of hearing myself talk about my dissertation.
203
I'm done with it, I'm over it, but I have some exciting news.
204
We have actually reached 12 ,000 words.
205
Yeah, I am as shocked as you are, but we've done it.
206
Whether those 12 ,000 words are 12 ,000 good words is another story, but you know what?
207
I'm happy with the story that we've got.
208
In fact, that's not just another story, that's another whole library, and...
209
I don't have my library card today, no thank you.
210
I'm social distancing from that library, no thank you.
211
In fact, I guess you could say that writing your thesis during quarantine is social dis.
212
Didn't sing. Am I right?
213
That's funny.
214
Tell me that's not funny.
215
I'm literally procrastinating from something that I quite desperately need to do.
216
So I've printed off a physical version of my disc, basically because when I edited my book, which by the way, I have a book coming out.
217
So bizarre to even say that out loud.
218
When I was editing that, I was sent a physical copy and I had to make annotations
219
and notes on that and then send it back to my publishers.
220
and if you go over it with a pen or a pencil, over every single word, I feel like you take them in, in a lot more detail.
221
And hopefully that will draw attention to the mistakes that I've made, I guess.
222
And I think this could be pretty vital because earlier when I had a read through it, the first time I read through the whole thing,
223
I realised that throughout the whole disc I had been referring to two characters whose names are Jim and George,
224
as Fred and George, as in the Weasley twins from Harry Potter.
225
So I feel like you would definitely lose marks for referencing
226
characters in Harry Potter rather than the characters in the actual book you're meant to know inside out.
227
I don't know what happened, I don't know what went wrong, but it's fixed now.
228
and made those changes and then I went over it with a different colour
229
and a different colour and a different colour until basically I had identified everything
230
that was wrong with it and the essay was definitely better for it.
231
Then when you can see me wearing the black hoodie that was Friday morning so this is a new day now, this was deadline day and I was just a bundle of stress in the morning
232
so I didn't really film very much aside from these time lapses.
233
So here you can see me just making my final final edits to my draft and improving it.
234
Hopefully, we'll see, I guess.
235
Okay, so I have painstakingly been through every single reference I made sure that it's perfect, which is good because many of them weren't but now they are
236
so it's fine Now I am going to go through my essay for what should be the final time.
237
I mean, it's an hour and a half until the deadline, so like, it is the final time.
238
In fact, realistically, this is probably the last time I will ever read this essay because, once we are done here.
239
I'm never looking at this ever again. So...
240
yeah, that's kind of wild.
241
I'm gonna get on with reading it.
242
Yikes, I definitely should not still be making edits, but I am, oh my god.
243
Okay, here we go.
244
I am logging on.
245
My hand is shaking.
246
This really feels like a big deal.
247
I really hope I can find where we're supposed to submit it, because like now would not be a great time.
248
for that not to be available.
249
Submission point.
250
Imagine if it said here, like, the word count was 10 ,000 words instead of 12 ,000 or something stupid.
251
I need to not jinx that. And...
252
Upload!
253
Oh my god, I just submitted my dissertation!
254
That is so crazy.
255
Well...
256
Now what?
257
Wow, five minutes before the deadline as well.
258
That might be the earliest I've ever submitted an essay.
259
I fully just went back to the first ever thing we were sent about the word account just to make absolutely sure.
260
but it's there.
261
12 ,000.
262
Phew.
263
I mean, I honestly don't know why I was expecting to happen, because like, if it wasn't 12 ,000 words and it actually was 10 ,000, then...
264
I'd just be screwed, but I would know I was screwed which would be worse than not knowing temporarily.
265
Guys, this is honestly just so lame.
266
I should be at the pub right now.
267
I genuinely celebrated that finishing my diss by getting some brain crackers and watching Escape to the Country.
268
It's just sad.
269
What a sad little life Jane.
270
But yeah, you know, just quarantine things.
271
So I am going to wrap up this video here.
272
Thank you so much for watching.
273
Sorry that you had to go through this with me.
274
And by the way, I wouldn't recommend, like if you are watching this video and thinking "I'll do my dissertation last minute like you did" don't.
275
Genuinely, this has been one of the worst weeks ever.
276
I am always, invariably, a last -minute kind of guy, but this is This is taking the piss.
277
The thing is, I have done three years of uni now
278
and I know how my brain works and I do need that adrenaline of a deadline.
279
But the circumstances of like Everything quite dramatically changing in the last month has kind of made that a bit more confusing.
280
But yeah, this was not a good time
281
But I hope you enjoyed it if you're a sadist
282
and you did give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more for me I make loads of videos.
283
In fact now I've got time to make videos, so Hopefully they'll be a bit more optimistic than this one was.
284
For now, my dissertation is done.
285
I've been Jack Edwards Thank you so much for watching and I will see you next time.
286
Bye bye!
287
In case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.
