쉐도잉 연습: State verbs made simple – a Mini English Lesson - 영상으로 영어 말하기 배우기

레슨 만드는 중...
1
Why do English teachers hate McDonald's?
2
Okay, so maybe we're not hating it but we are definitely not loving it.
3
Some of us might be liking it and I suppose overall we're probably being okay with it.
4
Did you notice anything strange about the verbs in that sentence?
5
I used them all in the continuous form but I shouldn't really have done that because they're state verbs.
6
This means that they should be in the simple form and not the continuous form with ing.
7
And that's why so many English teachers were upset when McDonald's started using their famous slogan, I'm loving it.
8
State verbs are also known as stative or non -action verbs.
9
The clue is in the name.
10
These verbs are not actions and so we don't use them in the continuous form.
11
State verbs fall into four main categories.
12
Thoughts and opinions like agree, know, think and understand.
13
Feelings and emotions like love, hate, prefer and want.
14
Senses and perceptions be, appear and seem.
15
And possessions and measurements have, possess, measure and way.
16
When these verbs describe states and not actions, we don't use them in the continuous form.
17
Simple, right?
18
But the tricky thing is that many of these verbs can also be used to describe actions.
19
And then we can use them in the continuous form because they are action verbs.
20
For example, you could say, I think Pride and Prejudice is one of the best books ever written.
21
And you'd be right, for two reasons.
22
Firstly, because you use the simple form of think.
23
It's an opinion, so a non -action verb.
24
And secondly, because Pride and Prejudice is pure genius.
25
So of course you're right.
26
However, you could also say, I'm thinking about going on a Jane Austen -themed holiday.
27
Write again.
28
Here, thinking is an action.
29
It's something you're doing right now and you haven't decided yet.
30
So you use the continuous form.
31
And obviously, that holiday is absolutely the right choice.
32
I will see you there.
33
Another example is see.
34
When it means understand, use it in the simple form as a state verb.
35
Oh, I see your point.
36
The same goes for when it means perceive, like, do you see that beautiful bird over there?
37
It's a perception, so it's a state verb.
38
However, we also use see in the continuous to refer to plans, like, I'm seeing Olivia Rodrigo in concert next week.
39
Jealous?
40
That's an action, so it's continuous.
41
Seeing in the continuous form is also used for dating or romantic relationships.
42
Once I had a very confusing conversation with a friend who speaks English as a second language.
43
He asked me, are you still seeing Anna?
44
And I replied, no, Anna is my friend, not my girlfriend.
45
We were both really confused until I realized that he meant, do you still see Anna?
46
Do you and Anna still meet regularly?
47
In this case, choosing between the simple and the continuous form actually changes the meaning of the sentence.
48
Another example of when the meaning changes is with the verb be.
49
What's the difference between you're so annoying and you're being so annoying?
50
In the first one, when I use the simple form, I mean you're annoying all the time.
51
It's just your personality.
52
In the second one, in the continuous form, it's a temporary action.
53
You're being annoying right now, but I expect it to stop.
54
Hopefully soon.
55
So remember, state verbs fit into the four categories that we mentioned, but many of these verbs can also be action verbs.
56
It all depends on the context.
57
This is an area of the English language which is evolving and changing quite quickly, maybe because of the influence of companies like McDonald's.
58
The best way to stay up to date is to make sure you watch, read and listen to as much authentic English as possible.
59
So you see lots of examples of this language in context.
60
You will understand how to use state verbs correctly in no time.
61
And stay up to date with the language as it evolves.
62
And who knows?
63
Maybe one day even English teachers will be loving it.

첫째, "I think Pride and Prejudice is one of the best books ever written"에서 "think"는 의견을 나타내는 상태 동사이므로 단순 시제를 사용했습니다. 둘째, "I'm thinking about going on a Jane Austen themed holiday"에서 "thinking"은 현재 진행 중인 행동이므로 진행 시제를 사용했죠. 이렇게 문맥에 따라 동사 형태가 바뀌는 것을 관찰하면, 상태 동사와 행동 동사의 차이를 명확히 느낄 수 있습니다. 셋째, "You're being so annoying!"는 일시적인 행동을 강조하기 때문에 "being"을 사용해 진행 시제로 표현했는데, 이는 상대방의 현재 모습을 부드럽게 비판할 때 자주 쓰이는 표현입니다.

shadowing 연습 루틴

이 비디오를 활용한 shadow speak 연습은 다음과 같이 하세요. 1. 비디오를 5초씩 재생하고 멈추며, 화자의 발음과 억양을 정확히 따라합니다. 특히 "I'm lovin' it"나 "Are you still seeing Anna?"
