1
You are going to learn that your body is important just as your mind is important.
2
And based on this very basic idea, now it starts.
3
Now somebody maybe asks, OK, now, yes, I want to develop the mind, how should I do it?
4
And then, in the Shaolin Temple traditionally we are teaching Buddhist teachings, Confucianist teachings and Taoist teachings.
5
So three, let's say, teachings aiming in the development of the mind.
6
So you are reading series, you are reading essays, you are reading different texts,
7
maybe some of them describing the life of one of these persons, Buddha or maybe Lao Tzu or maybe Confucius.
8
By putting yourself into the skin of those personalities, you maybe, maybe or maybe not,
9
get a glimpse of, ah, okay, so this is how they were living.
10
This is the virtues that they inhabited in themselves, why they are behaving in this, this and that way.
11
These were some type of virtues that they were abiding to, that they kept as a guideline in their daily life.
12
That is like where the theory part in a way tries to already offer you something.
13
Offer you something because at the end of the day it's still up to you to decide
14
whether you take what you have observed there as something that you think is useful for you, or if you just say, I cannot relate to it,
15
I don't know what it means, so it's not relevant for me.
16
This is like in terms of theoretical aspects.
17
And then at the same time we have the physical practice, which means it is the Kung Fu training, It is the Tai Chi training and it is the Qi Gong training.
18
And practical means because by doing some type of practice, you get answers.
19
Sometimes it's answers you didn't ask,
20
but nevertheless the important part is that through the practice there is some type of information and some type of knowledge
21
being transmitted to you along the way of practice
22
that will never ever come in this lifetime if you would only read books.
23
The knowledge from the practical,
24
the knowledge from the theoretical, this afterwards you take.
25
What it means is you You have a field of knowledge,
26
you have an area that now at any time wherever you are going in this lifetime you are able to access it.
27
And when are these times to access it?
28
It is times when you are being placed in a situation where you need to take a decision, for example.
29
No matter from which country you are coming from, no matter from which culture somebody is coming from.
30
This whole life is based on the decisions you are taking.
31
Some people take that type of decision which leads to a consequence,
32
other people maybe take better decisions which leads to another consequence.
33
Ultimately it's about the decisions.
34
But how come sometimes are confronted with the same situation but they take completely different approaches,
35
they take completely different decisions.
36
It is because one of them has more or the other one has less access to knowledge,
37
to experience than the other one.
38
So what all All of this theoretical learning,
39
practical learning, what all of this is supposed to offer to you is just a whole bandwidth of solutions,
40
which we think is very good to have walking through this lifetime,
41
not only as a martial artist, it doesn't matter from where you come from.
42
The more possibilities you can access, the better for you.
43
Today's video is sponsored by MulliganBrothers.com where you can now get the all-new Memento Mori poster
44
that is behind me with 10% off using code STOIC at checkout and please join the waiting list for the new journal.
45
It is dropping very soon.
46
But before that, here are my personal favorite rules from Master She Hung Yi from the Shaolin Temple Europe.
47
Let's dive into the video.
48
Sometimes in order for you to develop something,
49
some type of experience, some type of situations are necessary.
50
So that means this idea of sometimes it needs something really, really emotional. that triggers you inside.
51
Then a change comes.
52
Sometimes it's exactly what makes you cry, exactly what makes you confront yourself and what is super uncomfortable.
53
Exactly these moments sometimes are the ones you should be thankful for
54
because they carry the potential to unlock something very fundamental inside of you.
55
Let's say like this.
56
It is impossible for a human being to walk through this lifetime
57
without making things that the first time they do it directly go right.
58
What I mean is everybody will do something which will go wrong, no matter in which type of field.
59
But after it went wrong the first time, the question is how are you going to continue?
60
If you are starting to be wise,
61
intelligent, you are observing the situation.
62
Why did you make it wrong?
63
What was the mistake?
64
What went wrong in it?
65
If you are confronted the second time with the same situation and you make it wrong again, so apparently you didn't learn something.
66
And in the way how Confucius expresses this is, making something wrong the first time is not a mistake.
67
It is your chance to correct it.
68
But making the same situation over and over wrong again and wrong again,
69
because you are of the unwillingness to learn something from it. That is the mistake.
70
That something goes wrong the first time, this is not the mistake.
71
If you don't learn from it, if you don't observe the situation,
72
take the knowledge out in order to make a better outcome for the future,
73
If this is not your trial, if this is not what you're aiming for, then it's a mistake.
74
So in a way, it is the same that nowadays we are already expressing with the term of
75
that's why you need challenges.
76
You will fail definitely a few times.
77
The question is what will you take out of these failures?
78
And in the way of people, for example, yes, it can happen that you made in the past,
79
took some decisions, took some actions that have shaped your present life right now
80
and also will have an impact on the future.
81
But we cannot undo the past.
82
Therefore the question is, what will you take out of this lesson that you have?
83
You did one thing wrong in the past.
84
Now it's following me, following you, your whole life long.
85
My first conclusion is, I need to better take care about what I am involving in.
86
Message number one.
87
Now some things you cannot undo, yet there is still the possibility to rebalance things.
88
And there are different ways how you can approach it.
89
For example, by doing a lot of charity work.
90
You did wrong to many people in the past.
91
Now, do something good for many people where you are excluded.
92
Let's say, charity work.
93
Invest some of your time to take care of people that they can benefit from your work energy, let's say.
94
These are very practical ways that in our tradition we also sometimes make use of.
95
Charity work, donating.
96
This is where all of this comes from. Because it takes something.
97
It takes something from you in order to live this way of life.
98
Everybody talks about letting go of the self, letting go of the illusion of the ego.
99
How?
100
For example like this.
101
Do something that is not for the benefit of yourself.
102
Invest your lifetime, a few hours, a few days, every week,
103
every month and do something where other people are benefiting from your work.
104
This is what I think is a practical way how that maybe guilt that some people still feel nowadays can be reduced.
105
Before you were taking now it's time to give.
106
When things are rebalanced then you can continue on another path again.
107
But before anyone continues, you need to rebalance.
108
You want to know what is spiritual.
109
You don't approach spirituality.
110
You want to know what is spiritual, figure out what is the physical.
111
then you will get to there.
112
You want to know what is left?
113
Don't approach left.
114
Figure out what is right.
115
And in such a way,
116
this is also like something counterintuitive.
117
But that is one of the methods.
118
This is why you want freedom, we want freedom, yes.
119
But how do we live?
120
Structured rules, walls, all of this.
121
That doesn't look like this would be free.
122
Yes, you want freedom?
123
Face the structure, face the hard discipline.
124
Because if inside this hard structured form, you are able to have the freedom.
125
You feel free inside this hard form.
126
That is the freedom.
127
But to always directly approach what you want is the wrong way.
128
Why?
129
Because it is one-sided.
130
Because it is only one-sided.
131
You want success, you directly try to to approach success,
132
but it's impossible to have this success if you do not know what that failure is before.
133
So now the question is, how do you make this both?
134
How can you have this wide view of incorporating everything that is involved in it?
135
You need to find a way how to always embrace everything that is involved into it.
136
And that's why we say relaxation and tension, they both belong together.
137
That's why there's no way.
138
I need to know both of them.
139
This is not about if you want or not.
140
You need both of them.
141
Of course we want to have spiritual development.
142
But how do we get there?
143
by figuring out what is at the moment really accessible to me, my body.
144
Because there this is nothing about imagining, this is nothing about fantasizing.
145
Your body is something that is available to you 24 hours every day.
146
So therefore, because it is so close to me, I can learn from it.
147
So we go from the physical to the spiritual.
148
And yes, this is where I would say the...
149
It's one part of what is existing in this type of teachings.
150
What I know is
151
when people receive some type of knowledge,
152
that knowledge can be very, very powerful.
153
There is knowledge out there that just gives you the ability suddenly to see for yourself what you are capable of.
154
Now the question for me is, if I would like to run any type of system,
155
if I would like to establish some type of structure,
156
I don't want that everybody inside the structure does what he thinks he wants to do.
157
It just would not work.
158
So now the problem is, in the moment where you are receiving some type of knowledge and you for yourself can understand your potential,
159
I think it's not wanted.
160
So based on that, it was unwanted after some time that the real knowledge,
161
that the real methods are being shared to too many people, not just in China, but worldwide.
162
I think it's still nowadays like this.
163
There is some type of knowledge people don't want that it's getting out there.
164
Why?
165
Because after you have this type of knowledge, after you practice and develop yourself, you cannot be controlled anymore.
166
You cannot be influenced so easily anymore.
167
Why?
168
Because you see for yourself what you can do and what you can't do.
169
You don't need to listen for anybody to tell you what you are able of and what you are not capable of.
170
This is what it means to bring out the potential of someone. Which potential?
171
The potential to express yourself.
172
If you don't realize that potential inside of yourself, what you can and what you can't, other people will tell you.
173
Other people will put you in that category where they think you would be useful for.
174
But this is not what I think is the intention and the purpose of you living this life.
175
I think for all of us living this life means you
176
have the right in a way to self-express yourself as long as you don't harm other people along this way.
177
So this complete knowledge and at the same time the methods that were strengthening,
178
hardening and making your body become a weapon, this combination is deadly for any system.
179
You are a good fighter and you are intelligent and wise.
180
You know what you are mentally and physically capable of
181
and your body is at the same time strong is the worst combination.
182
Nobody can tell you something.
183
So and this is why it's a big jump right now.
184
But there is the time where the practice of the martial arts was forbidden.
185
And now based on that I don't want to go too deep into it because sometimes these These are legends,
186
sometimes they are fairy tales, I don't know.
187
But some movements of the traditional martial arts styles, for example, sometimes you see that it looks like a farmer's job.
188
Because it is said that this type of fighting techniques were hidden inside the farmer's job
189
because they couldn't publicly practice their Kung Fu.
190
They needed to hide their training in, let's say, daily activities where nobody could witness this.
191
I cannot tell you if it's a legend or not.
192
It's out of question that there are practices still existing nowadays that definitely have some similarities.
193
And yes, but the main idea is that there was a time where all of this practical approach was forbidden.
194
And yes, and that was at the same time also the point where I think it happened
195
that the majority of knowledge that once was hidden inside those walls started to spread into the world.
196
And this is why you don't find it anymore where you think it is.
197
It may be slowly, it's coming back again.
198
But it's still out there right now.
199
And like I initially also said, what is another mission of this monastery?
200
It's the same like it is 1,500 years ago.
201
2. Collecting knowledge, this time it just means we have to recollect it because it's lost. And number 2.
202
Educating the youth.
203
Educating the youth now it's our novices,
204
the master students and the disciples and everybody who in a way is now in contact with this temple. And what goal?
205
Give the power back.
206
Give the power back that people have.
207
Is that humans have the same issues in every country, regardless of nation and culture.
208
There are some things that are just connected to being human.
209
At the same time I realize that some nations,
210
some cultures are very much embedded also in the way of how they were brought up,
211
meaning with a very specific type of looking at the world.
212
Another part of this world has other ways of looking at the same problem.
213
Everybody is looking for the solution of their issues.
214
And sometimes there is not only one answer.
215
Sometimes the answer from them is correct and the answer from them is correct.
216
because sometimes the answer and the solution is based on the person itself.
217
I make it maybe a little bit more clear.
218
In Buddhism exists for example this idea of reincarnation.
219
In other traditions you don't have reincarnation.
220
Either you have paradise or you have hell.
221
So now somebody might be asking, so who is talking the truth now?
222
The Christians or the Buddhists?
223
So what of them?
224
Either reincarnation or hell and heaven?
225
What if both of it would be possible?
226
What if the person who his whole life long believed and grew up in this belief system?
227
There will be heaven and hell.
228
Okay, you go to heaven and hell.
229
And if somebody died with the last thought of reincarnation, is possible.
230
Why he can't get to that state of being reincarnated?
231
Who says there can only be one of those two things?
232
Because potential for me means if a human can sink it, it's there.
233
And if somebody creates something in the mind between heaven and hell, it's there.
234
If somebody creates in his mind reincarnation, it's already existing in the mind as well.
235
And so from this example I can just see that what nowadays is happening is that a lot of eastern insights,
236
eastern methods for example, on the one side, being more and more exposed in the western world.
237
And then it seems like the Western world now is trying to counter with some insights
238
that the Western science and the Western culture maybe has developed.
239
And I just think both of them are right.
240
It would be good to see the connection between...
241
The connection, how both of these insights can be brought together.
242
Because it just gives you a bigger view.
243
And eventually we're talking about the same stuff.
244
And not against each other.
245
So, and in that sense, very, very glad and very thankful if there are people that are maybe famous out there,
246
if they also sometimes share the methods, even so they are coming maybe from another area.
247
It only tells me, okay, maybe he got it.
248
Maybe he understood that it's the same, it's just, I just speak another language.
249
With the way of how I speak, I can reach a certain group of people.
250
With the way of how another person explains it, for example Joe Rogan, the way how he talks, he reaches another group of people.
251
But what is it that is reaching them?
252
A message.
253
And this is the important part.
254
I don't care how the message is reaching them.
255
I want the message to get out.
256
In the recent times, for example, when I looked at different interviews, there is one word which like starts to, maybe it seems like it,
257
but it pops up more often, which is the warrior.
258
It pops up a little bit quite often and of course you can be a mental warrior meaning you're always strict,
259
you're always strong in the mind, you keep going.
260
Yes of course this is something that you need but at the same time taking it a little bit more literal, a little bit more martial,
261
it also means a warrior that you at the same time have the physical abilities to interfere.
262
A warrior is sent.
263
A warrior has or feels the obligation if something is out of balance out there, I'm gonna fix it.
264
Or you try.
265
And if you try and you fail, you try harder next time.
266
But you don't give up on that statement that you're giving to yourself.
267
So in that sense, and especially that the Shaolin warriors are embedded in the field of martial arts,
268
the full picture is you need to have a capable body.
269
But if I would express it like this too often, maybe there will be a group of people that say,
270
yeah, but I can't anymore because of this, this and this issue.
271
So how can I still participate in the Shaolin teaching?
272
You can, of course.
273
That's why I'm telling this the whole time that it's not about this martial aspect.
274
But if you want to have a glimpse into how in the past Shaolin warriors were living,
275
why they were called like this, it's possible to find it out.
276
And that means you are using methods to bring something out of the body that the average person does not have.
277
It's not only that you are physically able.
278
It is something very strange.
279
It is something that inside of you, you access something different in you.
280
There is a famous saying which is called Guishou Foshin.
281
Demon's hand, Buddha's heart.
282
It's an old Shaolin saying.
283
Develop the demon hand while at the same time maintain the Buddha's heart.
284
Demon and Buddha, you might say they are both very two different sides.
285
Yeah, you need both.
286
You need both.
287
Demon hand, demon heart, no good.
288
Then you are going to become a threat for this world.
289
demon hand, Buddha heart, to be able to access something and then decide upon your heart whether to use it or not.
290
I think this is what we're looking for.
291
And the physical abilities is important of course but there's more to it.
