Growing up in a super small town in rural Arkansas meant that if you were different at all, people noticed.
2
And I was different.
3
Hi, my name is Ashley, and this is the story of how my biggest burden became my superpower.
4
And then my burden again.
5
Ever since I was a toddler, I had a hearing impairment that forced me to wear this really awkward device over my left ear.
6
My parents told me I could never take it out, that it would be dangerous if I did.
7
And as I entered tweenhood, I really wanted to.
8
Paging agent Ashley, do you copy?
9
Molly, the class clown, was also the class bully.
10
She would come up and tap on my hearing device.
11
I said, Ashley, come in.
12
We have a breach of security.
13
The class would laugh at her shameless harassment, and the teachers were afraid to stand up to her.
14
They didn't want to get roasted after all.
15
My home life wasn't much better.
16
Mom and Dad were always fighting, and it always seemed like it was about me.
17
How was school today, honey?
18
Is that horrible girl still making fun of you?
19
I was still too busy stabbing my peas with a fork to respond.
20
I really wasn't in the mood.
21
Ashley, I said how was school?
22
Did you hear me?
23
Of course she heard you.
24
She can hear.
25
She's just in one of her moods.
26
I'm sorry.
27
I'm just trying to connect with our daughter.
28
Well, maybe you should give her some space.
29
All your suffocating isn't helping.
30
Ugh!
31
I wish I couldn't hear you both!
32
I yanked the device out of my ear for the first time ever
33
and was met with a piercing ringing sound
34
that I can only imagine feels like what a dog hears when someone blows a dog whistle.
35
Honey, no!
36
Mom and Dad rushed over and shoved the device back in my ear.
37
I nearly passed out from the pain of the noise.
38
When I came to, I was in shock.
39
What was that?
40
That's what happens when you don't listen to us.
41
That device is there to protect you.
42
Don't try that again.
43
Protect me from what, though?
44
Hearing loss?
45
Something felt off.
46
But I didn't dare remove the device again.
47
I didn't have many friends.
48
But my parents got me this harmonica bottle.
49
Despite my hearing issues, blowing into the harmonica cap and playing a tune with every sip brought me joy.
50
I know it's a small thing.
51
But isn't life all about the little moments that make us happy?
52
Check out the link in the description.
53
When I got to high school, Mom forced me to join an extracurricular in the hopes I would make friends.
54
So I joined the soccer team, the only sport I was remotely good at.
55
But I didn't realize
56
Molly was on the team.
57
She would tease me for any mistakes I made.
58
Hey, Trashly, can you turn off your music and focus on scoring a single goal?
59
During our penultimate season game against our biggest rival,
60
I was so scared that I would mess up and Molly would never let me hear the end of it.
61
We were a point away from winning.
62
The defense was tight.
63
I had no idea
64
Molly was planning to pass me the ball.
65
Ashley, get open!
66
She kicked the ball midair and I tried to chest bump it.
67
But instead, I fell flat on my chest, losing us the game.
68
I thought that thing was supposed to help you here.
69
I couldn't take it anymore.
70
I stood up and kicked the soccer ball straight to her head.
71
I heard you loud and clear.
72
Bam!
73
The soccer ball hit her smack in the face.
74
Fuming, she charged at me.
75
She tackled me to the ground, and then I felt her yanking on my hearing device.
76
Give me that thing!
77
Stop!
78
Don't!
79
Help!
80
I need help!
81
But before anyone could save me, she pulled out a device and chucked it across the field.
82
That brutal, painful ringing started reverberating again.
83
It sent shockwaves through my head and my body.
84
I fell to my knees and screamed in agony.
85
And then, silence.
86
Total, utter silence.
87
I opened my eyes, stunned by the scene in front of me.
88
No one was moving.
89
Everyone was frozen in place.
90
The ref had his hand around
91
Molly's wrist, trying to restrain her.
92
But why was no one moving?
93
Uh, hello?
94
Guys?
95
Guys?
96
What is happening?
97
The thing is, I could hear myself screaming, perfectly clear, even without the hearing aid.
98
I scanned the field for my device and found it in the goalpost.
99
I fashioned it back into my ear and was met with that piercing ringing again.
100
But this time, when I opened my eyes, everyone was moving again.
101
Molly was being apprehended by the ref getting dragged off the field.
102
And hovering above me was a boy my age from the opposing team.
103
I thought he was going to say something snarky, but instead he offered me his hand.
104
I'm sorry that happened to you.
105
Oh, weird.
106
Looks like you got your device back.
107
Huh.
108
Anyway, I know what it's like to be bullied.
109
I'm Jasper, by the way.
110
He had these really weird -looking sunglasses secured to his head with a metal wire.
111
I can't take them off, or something about the sun.
112
I don't know.
113
Just stay strong, and don't let it get to you.
114
What they see as your biggest weakness could be your biggest strength.
115
My biggest strength?
116
Okay.
117
There was totally something my parents weren't telling me.
118
I mean, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but something connected to the device seemed to stop time.
119
When I got home, I thought about telling my parents what I had experienced, but I had no idea how they'd react,
120
and I wanted to be sure first.
121
So, I did a little experiment at dinner.
122
Your coach called.
123
Apparently you got into a little tussle with that girl Molly.
124
I'm going to call her mother.
125
Enough is enough.
126
Oh, come on.
127
You think that's what Ashley needs?
128
Her mother interfering? like that's gonna make school easier for her?
129
Would you rather she get tormented every day?
130
I rushed away from the dinner table and locked myself in the bathroom.
131
I couldn't listen to them bicker anymore.
132
I yanked out my earpiece, ready to face that dreadful ringing.
133
When it was over and I opened my eyes, all was silent.
134
The shrill sound of my parents screaming was gone.
135
I was nervous to go back to the kitchen, a million thoughts running through my head.
136
But when I arrived at the dinner table, my parents were right where I left them.
137
My mom's fork waving at dad, spaghetti sauce all over dad's face.
138
Then I realized I couldn't hear the traffic outside, or the baby next door crying, or the wind.
139
I stepped outside to find that I had frozen the entire neighborhood.
140
What if I had caused a catastrophe?
141
I needed to get to the lookout in town to see how far my, uh, quirk extended.
142
My neighbor was frozen on his bicycle and I needed transportation.
143
I snapped a photo of him with my phone so I could put him right back where I found him.
144
Then I picked him up and set him gently on the sidewalk.
145
I hopped on his bike and pedaled to the overlook where I could see all the way out to the water.
146
I looked out onto the horizon, desperately searching for any sign of movement.
147
The river didn't even look like it was flowing.
148
But then I spotted something.
149
A fisherman waiting in the water reeling his fishing rod.
150
I didn't know if I could handle the responsibility of freezing the entire world.
151
I needed to get home and search for answers.
152
But as I turned around, I noticed a row of cars parked.
153
I peered through the windows and saw my classmates making out.
154
Well, frozen mid -makeout.
155
I thought the makeout spot was a total myth.
156
The last thing I needed right now was another reminder of how abnormal I was.
157
I'd never kissed anyone.
158
Then, in one of the cars, I saw a familiar mop of blonde hair against one of the windows.
159
It was Molly.
160
And in the passenger seat was Jasper.
161
What the heck?
162
I had no idea they even knew each other.
163
The guy who saved me from my bully looked like he was mid -arguing with her.
164
Were they dating?
165
Breaking up?
166
I was suddenly filled with rage.
167
I had to do something.
168
I saw a lizard on the ground, picked it up, and dumped it into the crack in the window onto her lap.
169
Then I hid behind a tree, put my hearing device back in, and watched her totally freak out.
170
She jumped out of the car, frantic.
171
Ew, ew, ew!
172
I couldn't help but laugh to myself.
173
I suddenly felt powerful.
174
This wasn't a quirk.
175
It was a strength.
176
Oh, shoot.
177
Totally forgot to return the bike.
178
I sped home, leaving the bike right where I found it.
179
When I got home, my parents were livid.
180
Where were you?
181
We were terrified.
182
We didn't even hear you leave.
183
Sweetie, it's fine.
184
She's home now.
185
You don't have to hover so much.
186
I just went for a bike ride to clear my head, to get away from your arguing.
187
I locked myself in my room, wishing there was a way I could use my powers to make my parents get along.
188
I thought maybe I could, by becoming the social, well -adjusted daughter they'd always wanted.
189
So, I started scheming.
190
First, I would stop time so I could make friends.
191
While I was at my locker, I overheard some cool alternative girls talking about a birthday celebration.
192
The party was fun, but no one got me the electronic baby doll I've wanted since I was a kid.
193
I know, I know I'm grown now, but I've been talking about it forever.
194
It's like my dream gift.
195
I took my earpiece out, suffered through the familiar pain, and sprang into action.
196
I dashed out of school, biked to the nearest toy store, and hunted down the electronic baby doll.
197
Taking a deep breath, I put my earpiece back in, walked up to the group, and smiled.
198
Hey, Brynn!
199
I know yesterday was your birthday and I saw the general invite.
200
I couldn't make it, but here's a little something for you.
201
Oh my god, no way!
202
An electronic baby doll?
203
Yep, she pees and poos.
204
Exactly what I wanted!
205
You're amazing!
206
Give me a hug, dude!
207
I invited Brynn and her crew over to watch a movie.
208
And I could hear
209
Mom and Dad talking about me from the other room.
210
I'm so relieved she's finally made friends.
211
Now if only she could get her grades up.
212
Sure thing, Dad.
213
Okay, time's up.
214
Ashley, walk me through the problem.
215
I was notoriously horrible at algebra, so I thought I'd buy myself some time.
216
The problem?
217
Well, that's easy.
218
I took my earpiece out.
219
Time froze.
220
And then I casually walked over to the smartest girl in the room's desk and copied her notes.
221
I walked back to my seat, put my earpiece back in, and...
222
To isolate the variable, first, subtract 5 from both sides of the equation,
223
simplifying 2x plus 5 minus 5 equals 15 minus 5 to 2x equals 10.
224
Oh, great work!
225
She's a -cheating!
226
Uh -oh, did
227
Molly somehow see me?
228
Someone's feeding her answers through her earpiece.
229
Nope, still just bullying me.
230
But I had an idea for revenge.
231
At our final season -ending soccer game, As Molly was winding up to kick the ball for an easy goal, I froze time.
232
She was halted mid -kick.
233
Then I moved the ball slightly to the right.
234
When I unfroze and she kicked, she fell straight onto her butt, missing the ball completely.
235
Her face turned beet red.
236
Might want to check your eyesight.
237
I swear I had that!
238
And even though it was causing me immense pain to keep freezing time, it was worth it just to see
239
Molly's face when I froze the field, moved the goalpost over ever so slightly, pivoted the goalie, unfroze time, and scored the winning goal!
240
The crowd went wild!
241
All of my teammates lifted me up in celebration, while Molly was pouting off to the side.
242
And after the excitement settled, I saw Jasper making his way toward me.
243
Wow, amazing performance.
244
I didn't know you'd be here.
245
Yeah, my best friend plays on the other team.
246
Hopefully he'll forgive me for talking to the enemy.
247
Hey, do you want to hang out later?
248
I blinked.
249
Uh, seriously?
250
From the corner of my eye, I saw Molly staring daggers at us.
251
You're not dating her?
252
Molly?
253
Ha, no, I'm not dating Molly.
254
I hesitated.
255
I saw...
256
What?
257
What did you see?
258
Never mind.
259
There was an awkward pause, and I needed to do something.
260
So I grabbed my harmonica bottle and took a sip.
261
Then, without thinking, I blew into the cap.
262
A loud, unexpected whistle echoed through the field.
263
Jasper jumped.
264
Did your water bottle just make a sound?
265
For some reason, I decided to play along, acting just as surprised as him.
266
Maybe I wanted to share the excitement.
267
Or maybe I was just really nervous.
268
I blinked down at it, then tried again.
269
A perfect little tune played from the cap.
270
No way.
271
Jasper grinned.
272
Okay, that's actually awesome.
273
Where do you even find something like that?
274
It was a gift.
275
But you can totally get one too.
276
Amazon links in the description.
277
Jasper shook his head, amused.
278
All right.
279
So is that a yes?
280
Yes!
281
Awesome!
282
I'll pick you up in an hour.
283
We can go to the lookout point.
284
I nodded, still holding my harmonica bottle like it had just revealed a secret superpower.
285
Because apparently, it kind of had.
286
I think I visibly gulped.
287
The lookout point?
288
Could this be it?
289
My first kiss?
290
But I was getting ahead of myself.
291
First, I had to finish my take -home algebra test.
292
There was no way I could do it in an hour.
293
So I improvised a little.
294
The janitor had the master key to every room in the school.
295
So when I saw him in the hallways, I just casually froze time and unclasped the keys from his belt.
296
But this time, the pain in my ear was really bad.
297
I had to act quick.
298
I unlocked the teacher's office, carefully searching for the test results, making sure not to move things too badly.
299
Finally, I found it.
300
But just as I was taking photos of the answers, my ears started ringing piercingly loud.
301
I collapsed onto the desk, trying to withstand the pain.
302
But I accidentally knocked the teacher's mug over, spilling old coffee all over the test.
303
I ran out of the office, locked the door, and clasped the keys back onto the janitor's belt before I fell again.
304
Then I put my earpiece back in and fled the school before anyone saw me.
305
I got home and waited for Jasper to pick me up.
306
But he never showed.
307
I'd been stood up.
308
Go figure it out.
309
Furious, I borrowed my neighbor's bike to the lookout.
310
And there Jasper was, wearing his sunglasses at night, sitting on the ridge, desperately clasping Molly's hand.
311
Oh, hey Jasper.
312
So, you stood me up for Molly?
313
Awesome.
314
Wait, are you guys in on this together?
315
Trying to humiliate me?
316
Ashley, no, that's not what this is.
317
Then what is it?
318
What are you really hiding behind your sunglasses?
319
You said you were sensitive to the sun.
320
Well, it's nighttime.
321
Leave us alone, freak.
322
I yanked my earpiece out when the coast was clear and pulled
323
Jasper's sunglasses down from his face.
324
But suddenly, I felt someone's hand grab my wrist.
325
It was Jasper's.
326
Startled, I quickly pushed his glasses back over his face.
327
His hand fell limp.
328
Had he unfrozen?
329
Shoot, shoot, shoot.
330
When I was safely down the hill, I unfroze everything.
331
I'd almost given myself away today.
332
I was getting too careless.
333
I needed to know what was wrong with me before something disastrous happened.
334
So that night, while my parents were sleeping, I sort of froze time to make sure they wouldn't wake up.
335
And I did some digging.
336
In my dad's office, I was shocked to find adoption papers from when I was three years old.
337
I couldn't believe it.
338
I only had more questions.
339
The next morning, mom stormed into my room, livid.
340
Ashley, the school said they caught you sneaking into your teacher's office.
341
Someone spilled coffee on the test answers.
342
What were you thinking?
343
I just wanted to do well in school so I didn't disappoint you and dad.
344
Well, this is disappointing.
345
I said you were putting too much pressure on her.
346
And your backseat parenting method is really working, huh?
347
Guys, stop.
348
I know the truth.
349
You can stop fighting.
350
What are you talking about?
351
Uh, that I was adopted?
352
Did you know about my power?
353
What happens when I take this out?
354
My parents went silent, and I hadn't even stopped time.
355
Guys!
356
It's, uh, complicated.
357
Why don't you sit down?
358
You did know!
359
Seriously?
360
Am I some sort of science experiment?
361
Honey, don't come near me!
362
I couldn't even trust my own parents!
363
I needed to know the truth, and it seemed only
364
Jasper might have the answers.
365
I ran out the front door.
366
When it occurred to me, I had no idea where Jasper lived.
367
Before I reached the end of the road, someone was flashing their headlights at me.
368
Honeywell, explain.
369
Just come home.
370
I started running faster and faster, with Mom tailing behind.
371
Out of breath, I pulled my earpiece out.
372
But amidst the chaos, I dropped it on the road, and then I heard a crunch.
373
Mom's car had stopped, but my hearing device had been crushed.
374
Underneath the front wheel of her car, it was completely destroyed.
375
I desperately tried putting it back into my ear.
376
Come on, come on.
377
But it wasn't working.
378
Time wouldn't start up again.
379
I had to find Jasper, fast.
380
He wasn't at the lookout, so I went to Molly's house.
381
She was sitting on her porch, crying.
382
I pulled her phone out of her pocket and set it in front of her face to unlock it.
383
There was about 20 missed calls from Jasper.
384
I found his address and her contacts, grabbed my bike, and rushed over there.
385
When I arrived at his house, I was stunned.
386
It was basically a shed.
387
I squeezed through the window to find
388
Jasper alone on his couch, frozen in place as he was holding a photo of himself as a child, surrounded by a huge family.
389
I ran to him and removed his glasses, and he unfroze.
390
Huh?
391
Ashley, is that you?
392
What are you doing here?
393
What's going on?
394
I ran outside to see if anything was moving, but time was still frozen.
395
Can you freeze time too?
396
Huh?
397
I grabbed his hand and took him outside to show him.
398
Dead silence.
399
Birds frozen in the sky.
400
But Jasper didn't seem surprised.
401
Oh, wow.
402
I had a feeling you had it too.
403
I haven't met anyone with...
404
What?
405
What's happening?
406
Why did you stand me up for Molly?
407
Does she know?
408
Ashley, I am so sorry.
409
I didn't stand you up.
410
I was scared.
411
Molly is just a former friend who's been making me do stuff for her since she found out about my secret.
412
But it's little stuff.
413
Harmless.
414
Like making her prom queen and voted most lovable in the middle school yearbook.
415
Basically, buying her popularity.
416
What was happening the night I saw you on the bench?
417
I was pleading with her not to spill my secret.
418
I said I didn't want to help her cheat or hack into her ex's phone and sabotage him.
419
You were born October 4th, right?
420
Yeah.
421
Me too.
422
And a handful of others.
423
Anyone in that nursery that day was exposed to some weird chemical that gave us this power to freeze time.
424
These glasses prevent that.
425
Your hearing aid.
426
When my parents found out, they used me.
427
They threatened to expo - expose me, take me to the government or whatever, if I didn't do what they asked.
428
I help them steal and cheat people and get rich.
429
I don't want to hurt anyone, but it seems everyone keeps hurting me.
430
I get that.
431
My parents never even told me I was adopted, and I had to find out about my power on my own.
432
They told me I had hearing issues.
433
It sounds like they were just trying to protect you.
434
I ran away when I was 14, and I have been on my own ever since.
435
It's been excruciating being alone.
436
But now, I found you.
437
Jasper was right.
438
My parents were probably just trying to protect me from the world.
439
It's what they must have been fighting about all this time.
440
I need to save my parents.
441
How do we reverse this?
442
Now that we know the truth about each other, we don't have to.
443
We can get out of this town now.
444
Wherever we are, we'll have the power.
445
And once we are far enough, the town and your parents will unfreeze and go back to normal.
446
It didn't sound half bad, but I couldn't just run from my problems forever.
447
No, I'm sick of manipulating things.
448
Making you like me because I cheated at soccer, making friends because they think I have cool interests, taking shortcuts.
449
It's all a lie.
450
I don't like you because you won at soccer.
451
I like you because you have a pure, genuine heart.
452
I felt I could trust you the moment I met you.
453
If that's true, then help me, please.
454
We have to start time again without running away.
455
And these powers, they need to end.
456
I saw him turn away from me.
457
He looked conflicted.
458
There is a way.
459
My parents made me freeze time
460
and steal a master device from the lab where your hearing device and my glasses were made.
461
They just wanted as much control over my power as they could have.
462
I took it with me when I ran away from home.
463
Activating the master device will restart time but it will overpower our devices, making them useless.
464
Which means I'll lose my powers.
465
Then I'd just be normal.
466
Jasper, there's nothing normal about you.
467
If our powers were in the wrong hands, imagine.
468
But we got them, and it led us to each other.
469
Isn't that enough?
470
Jasper didn't seem so sure, so I did it.
471
I faced my fears, leaned in, and kissed him.
472
And it was super awkward.
473
We both chuckled.
474
See, doesn't it feel nice to be generic?
475
We're just like every other awkward teenager.
476
He kissed me back.
477
And this time, it felt anything but normal.
478
It was magical.
479
Not so normal, huh?
480
Okay, Ashley.
481
Just promise me we can face this world together.
482
No matter what.
483
There's just one thing I think we should do first.
484
Together, we snuck into the school and tied up some loose ends.
485
Then, Jasper took out the master device and activated it.
486
Suddenly, things started to move slowly again.
487
He dropped it to the ground and stomped on it, then threw his glasses on the ground and stepped on them too.
488
I joined him till we smashed them to bits, and everything around us was in motion as usual.
489
Oh, thank goodness.
490
When I got home, my parents were sitting at the kitchen table holding hands.
491
Honey, oh my gosh, I'm so happy you're safe.
492
This is all your fault, Joe.
493
If you hadn't...
494
Stop!
495
Stop blaming each other.
496
I know everything.
497
I know you've both been arguing about how to keep me safe.
498
I just want to know, how come you adopted me?
499
Your birth mom gave you up for adoption when she found out you were different.
500
She was scared.
501
We were competing with another family, a corrupt family, to adopt you so we could protect you.
502
Shoot.
503
Tears were welling up in my eyes.
504
The best way you can protect me is by being nice to each other.
505
We just have different ideas about what's best.
506
And at the end of the day, I appreciate it.
507
I was lucky to be raised by both of you.
508
But I've decided what's best for myself.
509
I saw my parents link arms in anticipation.
510
I destroyed my earpiece.
511
You what?
512
I just want to be normal.
513
With all the pain and beauty that comes with it.
514
My parents clasped hands.
515
I thought they'd be pissed.
516
But instead, they scooped me into a hug.
517
That makes me so happy to hear.
518
Me too.
519
For the first time, it felt like we were all united.
520
Shortly after, Jasper and I started to date.
521
And even though we couldn't freeze time, it seriously felt like time was frozen whenever I'd look into his eyes.
522
I know, so sappy.
523
Don't worry, my mischievous spirit didn't die overnight.
524
That sneaking into the school charade we pulled before smashing his glasses?
525
This year's homecoming queen is...
526
Ashley!
527
What?
528
Jasper?
