Hey there!
2
I'm Emma from mmmEnglish.
3
This is an imitation lesson.
4
You'll practise speaking with me about a common everyday topic, shopping.
5
And you'll also get to practise using five really useful common phrasal verbs naturally in conversation just as a native speaker would.
6
Okay, here's how we'll practise together using the imitation technique.
7
You'll hear my story three times in three different ways.
8
First, you'll listen.
9
You're just listening to get the sound of the story into your ears and ready for your lips.
10
Secondly, you'll repeat after me.
11
You'll hear the same story except there'll be a pause where you can repeat back what you heard out loud.
12
Copying my pronunciation, my intonation.
13
Third, shadow me.
14
Now this is the tricky one where you speak along with me at exactly the same time.
15
Just like we're singing the same song together.
16
As we go, listen out for these five phrasal verbs.
17
To splash out, to try something on,
18
to set someone back, to sell out and to take something back.
19
In step one, just listen, listen for new words, listen to the tone of my voice.
20
I've got my cousin's wedding next month and since it's a special occasion, I thought I'd splash out a bit.
21
It's been a while since I bought something new And I found this gorgeous green dress.
22
The second I tried it on, I just knew.
23
The only problem, it was going to set me back four hundred dollars.
24
Four hundred.
25
I stood there having this whole conversation with myself in the fitting room.
26
Do I need it?
27
No. Do I want it?
28
Absolutely.
29
I've never felt so good in a dress before.
30
The shop assistant told me that if I took that dress, they'd be completely sold out of the style.
31
So I did it.
32
I bought it.
33
But honestly, by the time I got home, I felt sick.
34
I couldn't believe I'd spent that much on a dress.
35
I think I'm going to take it back.
36
I don't need to drop that kind of money on an outfit for a wedding, honestly.
37
Now in step two, repeat after me.
38
You'll hear me say the line and then there'll be a pause after so you can copy me exactly as you hear.
39
On the screen, you can see some words are in bold text.
40
These are the words that are stressed in the sentence so they are spoken a little louder and clearer than the others.
41
There is a letter underlined in some words.
42
This is the stressed syllable if the word has more than one syllable.
43
I've got my cousin's wedding next month And since it's a special occasion,
44
I thought I'd splash out a bit.

59
Honestly.
60
Now, try to shadow me, speak along with me, following the rhythm and the intonation of my voice.

78
So I splashed out on the dress of my dreams, it set me back a small fortune.
79
The style sold out when I bought it
80
and now I've got to take it back because I feel so guilty about my purchase.
81
Have you ever had that happen?
82
Do you think that I should have kept the dress?
83
Let me know down in the comments.
84
In fact, tell me if you have ever splashed out on something and if you did, how much did it set you back?
85
Using these phrasal verbs yourself for your own stories is how you're going to lock them into your own memory.
