It's perfect!
2
Perfect?
3
What's so perfect?
4
Your highness, don't you see?
5
We could send someone to get help!
6
Leave the island?
7
Now why didn't I think of that?
8
Oh, because it's suicide!
9
She's right!
10
We never leave the island!
11
Never leave!
12
There's snakes and birds and bigger bugs out there!
13
Exactly!
14
Bigger bugs!
15
We can find bigger bugs to come here and fight!
16
And forever rid us of Hopper and his gang!
17
Ludicrous!
18
Who would do a crazy thing like that?
19
I'll volunteer, I'd be very happy to volunteer!
20
You got a lot of spunk, kid, but no one's gonna help a bunch of ants.
21
At least we could try.
22
Oh, I could travel to the city, I could search there!
23
THE FAMILY.
24
Oh yeah, I'm Ethan your RealLife English Fluency Coach, and today we're learning English with a Pixar classic, Bugs Life.
25
So Flick has really buggered things up.
26
See, every year the ants need to prepare extra food to pay the grasshoppers for their protection.
27
Or rather, so that the grasshoppers don't hurt them.
28
Flick accidentally destroyed the colony's offering.
29
And now Princess Ada and the colony need to figure out what to do.
30
That's when Flake gets his brilliant or maybe it's crazy, idea.
31
He'll travel to the city and find tough bugs to defend them from the grasshoppers.
32
By the way, do you ever get into a conversation
33
and a word that you know you've learned simply won't come to you when you most need it, I've learned six languages myself.
34
So I've been there.
35
I totally know how you feel.
36
That's why we created our real life app where we have several tools
37
that help you to learn all the expressions you see highlighted in blue and never forget them.
38
That way, you can commonly use them all.
39
I'll tell you more about that in just a little bit.
40
But for now, let's learn all of the advanced expressions from that scene.
41
"Exactly!
42
Bigger bugs!
43
We can find bigger bugs to come here and fight
44
and forever rid us of Hopper and his gang !" When you rid someone of something, you're removing or freeing them from something unwanted.
45
It's like getting rid of a problem for someone.
46
For example, when Marvel introduced Spider -Man in the MCU, they were ridding the franchise of the history of the previous film versions
47
and giving fans a fresh start with a new Peter Parker played by Tom Holland.
48
followers.
49
A gang is a group of people who hang out together and often do bad things.
50
In this case, the grasshopper gang bully the ants.
51
You'll hear this word used in different contexts.
52
For example, in a friendly way, you might say "I'm going to the movie with my gang," meaning your group of friends.
53
But it can also refer to criminal groups, like street gangs in big cities.
54
By the way, the grasshopper's leader is appropriately called hopper.
55
This, along with the insect's name, comes from the verb to hop.
56
Some animals, like rabbits, hop.
57
It's like a small jump.
58
Now here's a fantastic advance word: "Ludicrous" means completely ridiculous or absurd.
59
So foolish that it's almost laughable.
60
When the council member says this about Flick's plan, he's basically saying it's totally crazy and unreasonable.
61
Check out this other example.
62
Next, I wanted to help you speak more naturally and understand native speakers better with something called connected speech.
63
That's how we natives cut, reduce, and link our words together in fluent speech.
64
We have several examples throughout the lesson, like this: We have a common pattern here.
65
When a "T" is followed by "U", they usually morph into a "choo".
66
"Choo".
67
And then "link".
68
So instead of "don't you see", Flick says, "Don't you see?
69
Don't you see?" Your speaking will only improve with lots of practice.
70
So listen again and try to say that just like Flick.
71
Your Highness, don't you see?
72
Your Highness, don't you see?
73
Now before we continue, let's test your understanding with a quick quiz.
74
You got a lot of spunk, kid, but no one's gonna help a bunch of ants.
75
What do you think spunk means here?
76
Intelligence or cleverness?
77
courage and determination, foolishness or recklessness, you .
78
you That's right,
79
the Queen is saying that Flick has Spunk because he's brave enough to volunteer for a dangerous mission, even though everyone thinks that his idea is crazy.
80
Another famous character with Spunk is Hermione.
81
She's always willing to stand up for what's right, and take on challenges.
82
even when others doubt her.
83
Now there's an important grammar point that I want to highlight here.
84
Did you notice how the Queen said, "You got a lot of spunk?" In formal English, this should be "you've got" or "you have".
85
But in casual spoken English, native speakers often drop the have and just say "you got." This is super common in everyday conversation.
86
You'll hear things like "you got this." I got a meeting at 3.
87
She got a point.
88
So when you hear "you got" without the apostrophe "ve" don't worry you're not missing anything.
89
That's just how we natives speak casually.
90
We also have another really nice connected speech example here.
91
You got a lot of spunk kid, but no one's gonna help a bunch of ants.
92
First off, "of" is often reduced to just an "uh" sound.
93
Then we have two tapped "ts" here, which sounds like a soft "duh"
94
This usually occurs when a T is between two vowel sounds
95
and they all link together so we hear "you got a lot of spunk." you got a lot of spunk.
96
Listen to that again and try to say it just like the Queen.
97
"You got a lot of spunk, kid." "You got a lot of spunk, kid." So Flick actually goes through with his crazy plan.
98
He leaves Ant Island, something no ant has done before, and heads to the big city to find warriors.
99
But there's just one problem.
100
The bugs he finds aren't actually warriors, they're circus performers.
101
When Flick met them, he misunderstood how they defeated some menacing flies.
102
So, he offers them the job to protect the colony.
103
"Will you help us?" "Where are they?" "We'll take the job !" "Yeah, come on !" "Really?" "No,
104
no, no !" "You can explain the details on the way." "Heh heh !" "Okay, come on everyone, break a leg !" "Whoa!
105
You're vicious !" "Hold on, Mr. Ant !" "Amazing!
106
This is too good to be true !" See, the circus performers believe that Flick is offering them a theatrical job, Flick said that he's scouting for bugs,
107
which means he's searching for them they understand he's a talent scout, someone who looks for talented individuals.
108
For example, scouts might go to university football games to find someone to join their professional team.
109
In theater, there's a superstition that it's bad luck to wish someone good luck before a performance.
110
Instead, we say "break a leg." However, Luke takes this literally and thinks he really has found some strong bugs that can defend them.
111
That's why he says "you're vicious." Let's watch what happens when Flick brings the warriors back to the colony.
112
We're gonna need a miracle!
113
That's right, we need a miracle!
114
Run for your life!
115
Ta -da!
116
Once again, our reputation precedes us.
117
Hey, everybody!
118
Hey!
119
I'm back!
120
Hey, guys!
121
Hey!
122
Look who's here with me!
123
Flick!
124
Flick, Flick, you're back!
125
I knew you could do it!
126
Ha!
127
Flick has returned!
128
He's back?
129
And he's accompanied by savage insects.
130
What?
131
How?
132
He wasn't supposed to actually find someone?
133
Oh, look at this, look at this, this is great, look.
134
Oh, my tickler!
135
Oh, kids, he's kinda ticklish.
136
Come on now, careful.
137
Well, my boy, you came through.
138
Acy and I are fun.
139
Very impressed.
140
- I had it!
141
Did you see that really big bug over there?
142
- He looks absolutely ferocious.
143
- They're our ticket out of this mess!
144
- They came just in time.
145
- That's right!
146
So Princess Atta, what do you think?
147
No, no, no, wait.
148
This was not supposed to happen.
149
Mayday, mayday.
150
We're losing the job.
151
We gotta sweeten the deal.
152
Your Majesty!
153
Ladies and gentlemen, Boys and girls of all ages!
154
Our true peer guarantees a performance like no other.
155
Why, when your grasshopper friends get here, We are gonna knock them dead!
156
Boy, these folks are sure hard up for entertainment.
157
Alright, let's learn all the expressions from this chaotic scene and understand the humor.
158
Ta -da!
159
Once again, our reputation precedes us.
160
Now, when someone says, "Our reputation precedes us," They mean that people have already heard about them before they arrive somewhere.
161
It means that your reputation arrives before you do.
162
The answer ran away scared, so he believes this must be because of their terrible performance.
163
When the Beatles first came to America in 1964, their reputation preceded them.
164
American teenagers had already heard about their music and fame in Britain, so by the time they arrived, they were greeted by thousands of screening fans.
165
Flick has returned!
166
He's back?
167
And is accompanied by savage insects!
168
Let's look at this word "savage".
169
It means wild and untamed.
170
like a dangerous animal.
171
When the ants see these big bugs, they think they look brutal and ferocious, like warriors who could really fight.
172
It's meant as a compliment here: they're impressed.
173
Earlier, Flick used a very similar word: vicious.
174
In modern slang, savage has taken on a new meaning too: People use it to describe someone who's bold, doesn't care what others think, or says something brutally honest.
175
For example, if someone makes a really clever comeback in an argument, their friends might say, "Ooh, that was savage !" Check out this other example.
176
This card has a lot of memories.
177
and you're just gonna throw it all away because you want to kiss some basic girl?
178
Savage!
179
Brixley isn't just some girl.
180
We're probably gonna get married!
181
Let's see another connected speech example.
182
Look at this, look at this, this is great, look!
183
When a word ending with "t" is followed by a word beginning with "th", we usually drop the "t" so that it flows together.
184
So, Flix says a smooth, Look at this.
185
Look at this.
186
Try to say that just like him.
187
Look at this.
188
Look at this.
189
This is great.
190
Look.
191
Look at this.
192
Look at this.
193
This is great.
194
Look.
195
"Look at this, look at this, this is great, look." "Oh my ticker !" Ticker is an informal, old -fashioned word for your heart.
196
When someone says, "Oh my ticker," they're expressing that something is so exciting, surprising, or scary that it's affecting their heart.
197
It's the kind of expression an older person might use.
198
"Oh, kids, he's kinda ticklish.
199
Let's come on out, be careful !" In this scene,
200
they're referring to Dim, the rhino beetle, who reacts when the young ants run beneath him.
201
Most people are ticklish on the bottom of their feet, their sides, or under their arms.
202
Alright, let's check out our final connected speech example for today.
203
"Let's come on now, careful !" Phrasal verbs like this almost always connect.
204
"come" and "on" sound like one word.
205
Come on!
206
"Come on, come on." And often when a word ends with a T, we cut the sound at the back of the throat.
207
This is called a glottal T.
208
Let me give you some more examples.
209
Say them after me.
210
Fight!
211
Kat.
212
Mute.
213
So this phrase sounds like, Come on out.
214
Come on out, listen again and say it just like Rosie the Spider.
215
And here we have another great come phrasal verb: Listen to what the Queen said.
216
To come through means to successfully do what was needed or expected of you.
217
It means you delivered on your promise or completed a difficult task.
218
The Queen is praising Flick for actually accomplishing his mission bringing back tough bugs.
219
Think about when the Avengers needed someone to go back in time and get the infinity stones in Endgame.
220
When they succeeded, you could say they really came through when it mattered most.
221
Here's another example.
222
By the way, the queen's pet is called Aphy, it's because he's an aphid.
223
a small insect that eats plant juices which damages and weakens them.
224
Now let's test your knowledge again with another quiz.
225
Listen to this line:
226
"He looks absolutely ferocious !" "Dar I take it out of this mess !" What do you think ferocious means?
227
Friendly and kind?
228
Fierce and scary?
229
Tired and weak?
230
you .
231
Exactly.
232
Ferocious is another word similar to savage and vicious.
233
It's often used to describe dangerous animals or intense behavior.
234
In The Lion King, Scar is ferocious when he's angry.
235
Or think about how ferocious a protective mother Bear is when defending her cubs.
236
And we heard another great idiomatic expression here.
237
"He looks absolutely ferocious !" "They're our ticket out of this mess !" When something is your ticket out of a situation, it means it's your solution or escape from a problem.
238
is what's going to rescue or fix things.
239
For example, when someone wins the lottery, people might say, "That's their ticket out of poverty." "No, no, no, wait!
240
This was not supposed to happen !" "Mayday, mayday, we're losing the job !" Mayday is an international distress signal used in emergencies especially by ships
241
or aircraft in serious trouble.
242
It's what you say when you need urgent help.
243
Here, The circus bugs are using it dramatically to express that their job opportunity is falling apart.
244
If you ever watched Titanic, you remember hearing Mayday when the ship was sinking and calling for help.
245
"We gotta sweeten the deal." When you sweeten the deal, you make an offer more attractive by adding something extra.
246
It's like adding sugar to make something taste better.
247
you're making the arrangement more appealing or beneficial.
248
Francis is saying they need to make their offer sound better to convince the ants to give them the job.
249
Think about when companies try to recruit talented employees.
250
They might sweeten the deal by offering a signing bonus, extra vacation days, or the ability to work from home.
251
Now the next line offers some great theatrical expressions that only confuse the ants more.
252
To knock them dead means to greatly impress someone or do something extremely well.
253
It's an expression performers use, like saying "we're going to give it an amazing performance."
254
Or imagine your co -worker is about to give a presentation and is really nervous.
255
You might encourage them by saying "knock 'em dead." Of course there's dramatic irony here
256
because the circus bugs mean it literally as a performance, while the ants think they mean defeating grasshoppers.
257
Finally, when you're hard up for something, you're desperately in need of it or lacking it.
258
The circus bugs are observing that the ants must really need entertainment if they're this excited about a circus performance.
259
eats plain crackers for dinner, you might joke, "Wow, you must be really hard up for food." And just a reminder that you can get more confident,
260
natural English by practicing all of today's expressions with your AI coach.

263
All right, and this is the moment of truth.
264
We're going to watch both scenes again without subtitles, and I'm going to ask you some quiz questions to see how much you've absorbed.
265
Let's do this.
266
What does ludicrous mean?
267
Extremely serious and important.
268
Completely ridiculous and absurd.
269
Somewhat reasonable but risky.
270
you you
271
Oh, ow, ow.
272
You're perfect!
273
Oh, great ones!
274
I have been scouting for bugs with your exact talents!
275
A Talon Scout!
276
My colony is in trouble!
277
Grasshoppers are coming!
278
We've been forced to prepare all this food!
279
Genius!
280
Here, Jeff!
281
Food?
282
Please!
283
WILL YOU HELP US? Where are they?
284
We'll take the job!
285
Yeah, we are!
286
Really?
287
You can explain the details on the way.
288
Okay, come on everyone, break a leg!
289
Whoa!
290
You're vicious!
291
Hold on, Mr. Ant!
292
Amazing!
293
This is too good to be true!
294
We're gonna need a miracle!
295
That's right, we need a miracle!
296
Ta -da!
297
"Ugh, once again our reputation precedes us." When someone says "our reputation precedes us" they mean: They're famous for being early.
298
People have heard about them before they arrived.
299
They're always running behind schedule.
300
Hey everybody!
301
Hey!
302
I'm back!
303
Hey guys!
304
Hey!
305
Look, look, look who's here with me!
306
Flick!
307
Flick, Flick, you're back!
308
I knew you could do it!
309
Ha!
310
Flick has returned!
311
He's back?
312
And he's accompanied by savage insects.
313
What?
314
How?
315
I - He wasn't supposed to actually find someone?
316
Oh, look at this, look at this, this is great, look.
317
Oh my dicker!
318
Oh, kids!
319
He's kinda ticklish!
320
Let's come in now, careful!

When you successfully complete a difficult task that someone asks you to do, you come through.
328
- Well, my boy, you came through.
329
Acy and I are very impressed.
330
- I'm glad, did you see that really big bug over there?
331
- He looks absolutely ferocious.
332
- They're our ticket out of this mess.
333
- They came just in time.
334

335
So, Princess Atta, what do you think?
336
No, no, no, wait!
337
This was not supposed to happen!
338
Mayday, mayday, we're losing the job.
339
We gotta sweeten the deal.
340

Ladies and gentlemen, Boys and girls of all ages!
342

343
Why, when your grasshopper friends get here, We are gonna knock them dead!
344
Match the expression to its meaning: you
345
"Boy, these folks are sure hard up for entertainment !" True or false?
346
If you're hard up for something, it means you have plenty of it and don't need more.
347
False.
348
It means you desperately need it or are lacking it.
349
Awesome job today!

Shadowing?
