This is the most over -engineered part of the iPhone and all it does is unlock your phone.
2
That spot used to be a thick strip on top of the display,
3
then it became the notch and now it's the dynamic island which holds the key parts of Face ID.
4
There's the regular front camera for selfies and next to it a dot projector, a flood illuminator and an infrared camera.
5
Those last three together are called the true depth camera.
6
It sounds like a lot just to unlock a phone
7
but every part of Face ID is there to stop one specific attack.
8
Let's say someone wants to get into your phone and the first thing they try is a photo of your face.
9
A photo like that is easy to get because you probably have dozens of them on your Instagram.
10
With a regular camera, this trick would actually work.
11
A regular camera only records colors and brightness, so it has no way to tell how far away things are.
12
For that camera, a sharp printed photo of your face and your real face look almost exactly the same.
13
Face ID deals with this by measuring distance, which basically means it checks how far every single point of your face is from the phone.
14
To do that, it uses infrared, which is a kind of light that your eyes can't see, but a special camera can.
15
When you pick up your phone, the first part that turns on is the flood illuminator.
16
Its job is to light up your whole face with infrared light, a bit like a flashlight that you can't see.
17
Thanks to that, the infrared camera can take a clear picture of your face even when you're lying in a completely dark bedroom.
18
Right after that, the dot projector turns on
19
and inside it there's a tiny infrared laser with a special
20
lens in front of it the lens splits the single laser beam into more than 30 ,000 separate dots
21
and those dots land all over your face.
22
Then the infrared camera takes a second picture and this time it shows exactly where each dot landed.
23
So how does a picture of dots turn into distances?
24
The dot projector and the infrared camera sit a small fixed distance apart from each other
25
and the phone already knows where each dot would show up in the picture if you pointed it at a flat wall.
26
Take the dot that lands on the tip of your nose.
27
Your nose is much closer to the phone than that flat wall would be so in the camera's picture,
28
this dot shows up shifted to the side.
29
A dot that lands on your cheek is a little farther away, so it's shifted a little less.
30
The phone measures the shift for every one of those 30 ,000 dots.
31
Then it uses basic geometry, which is called triangulation, to turn each shift into a distance.
32
When you put all of those distances together, you get a 3D map of your face, and this map is called a depth map.
33
With the printed photo, all of those dots land on the same flat sheet of paper
34
so the depth map comes out as one flat surface without a nose that sticks out and face ID rejects it.
35
Since a flat photo doesn't work, the attacker's next idea is to use a real face that looks a lot like yours, for example your brother's.
36
A depth map alone can't tell two similar faces apart and this is the job of a neural network.
37
That network gets to know your face when you set up face ID for the first time.
38
The phone asks you to slowly move your head in a circle and then to do it one more time.
39
During those two scans, the phone captures your face from a lot of different angles.
40
The network then turns everything it saw into a long list of numbers, and you can think of that list as a description of your face
41
From then on, the same thing happens every time you unlock your phone
42
The network takes the fresh infrared picture and the fresh depth map, and it turns them into a new list of numbers
43
Then it compares the new list with the one it saved during setup, and if the two lists are close enough to each other,
44
the phone treats it as a match
45
According to Apple, the chance that a random stranger's face is close enough to unlock your phone is less than 1 in a million.
46
But your brother has a much better chance than a random stranger, because he shares a lot of your features, so fooling the camera doesn't work.
47
And the attacker tries a different approach.
48
If they manage to hack the phone's software, maybe they can copy your face data out of memory and use it later.
49
This doesn't work either, because your face data lives in a part of the phone that iOS can't reach.
50
Inside Apple's main chip, there's a separate small processor called the Secure Enclave, and it has its own memory and even its own operating system.
51
iOS can't look into that memory at all,
52
and the only thing it can do is send the Secure Enclave a request and wait for an answer.
53
Apple built it this way so that even if an attacker takes full control of iOS, they still can't read anything inside the Secure Enclave.
54
The list of numbers that describes your face is encrypted, and only the Secure Enclave has the key.
55
That data never leaves your phone and it's not included in your iCloud backup either.
56
The secure enclave is also the part that actually unlocks your phone.
57
The files on your iPhone are encrypted and each time you lock the phone,
58
the keys to your most sensitive files get locked with one more key.
59
That extra key is kept inside the secure enclave where iOS can't touch it.
60
When your face matches, the secure enclave uses
61
that extra key to unlock the keys to your files and only then can iOS open them.
62
So basically, a successful match gives the phone back the keys to your own data.
63
Regular apps get even less than iOS does because when your banking app asks for face ID, the only thing it gets back is a yes
64
or a no. The app never gets to see your face at any point.

Что такое техника Shadowing?
