1
do not pronounce these letters at the ends of words in english we all know
2
that english is so annoying the way a word is written
3
and the way a word is pronounced can be two very different things
4
that is why i've created this lesson to make life easier
5
for you today we're focusing on silent letters at the end
6
of words i am going to teach you the rules so
7
that you can identify silent letters
8
and pronounce words more clearly remember i'm teaching my pronunciation of
9
these words i speak english with a modern received pronunciation accent and
10
if you want an accent like mine i think you'll be
11
interested in my five day british accent boot camp it's five
12
days of five focused pronunciation lessons each day is really practical and full of interactive exercises to help you master vowel sounds,
13
consonant clarity and the way British English naturally flows from word to word.
14
At the moment, I am offering two things.
15
One, a huge discount and two, lifetime access.
16
I know these two things are very important to my students.

18
I will see you inside.
19
Let's begin with the letter B, the silent B.
20
Do any come to mind?
21
Well, they all end with MB.
22
Words like, and repeat after me, bomb, comb, and climb.
23
We don't say bomb, comb, or climb.
24
The letter B is completely silent, so each of these words ends with a m sound.
25
Bomb, comb, climb.
26
Here are some more examples.
27
We have tomb with the long oo sound.
28
Womb, again with the long oo.
29
Lamb with the short a vowel sound.
30
And And limb with the short i sound.
31
We also have a few words with the uh vowel sound, as in up.
32
For example, and repeat after me,
33
crumb, numb, thumb, dumb, and succumb.
34
Notice the stress on the second syllable there, succumb.
35
And finally, one more actually, plumb.
36
Now, plumb is a word that I hear mispronounced all the time.
37
What do we call a person who fixes water pipes?
38
A person who plums, right?
39
A plumber.
40
Plumber.
41
The B stays silent, even when we add the letters ER.
42
So it's plumber, not plumber.
43
In fact, the letter B usually stays silent if we add a suffix to these words.
44
For example, bomb, bomber.
45
Climb, climbing.
46
We do have to be careful though because sometimes the B sound does come back when we add a suffix.
47
For example, crumb, crumble, crumbling, and bomb, bombardment.
48
Oh, and I have one last silent B word for you.
49
Now, I know the letter B isn't strictly at the end, but students make mistakes with this all the time.
50
It's this word.
51
Doubt.
52
Never pronounce the B here.
53
Doubt, not doubted which is hard to say.
54
It's much easier to say without the b.
55
Doubt.
56
Let's move on to the silent e at the end of words.
57
What do all of these words have in common?
58
Well, the e that appears at the end of these words isn't exactly silent.
59
It's magic.
60
Yeah, this e can have magical powers we do genuinely call it the magic E.
61
It changes the vowel sound before it, so it's pronounced like the letter of the alphabet,
62
as in A, E, I, O, and U.
63
Notice how the vowel sound changes is when we add an E to these words.
64
Tap, tape, hid, hide, rob, robe, cub,
65
cube.
66
Now, the magic E doesn't always work, but treat it as a guide.
67
It can help you figure out the pronunciation of many words that end with E.
68
Now, the E has no magical powers with these next words.
69
Never pronounce the E at the end of VE words like have, love, and give.
70
ME words normally have a silent E too.
71
For example, welcome and handsome.
72
Now notice the silent D in the middle there, handsome, not hand -some.
73
Be careful with these exceptions though.
74
Epitome and gimme, the informal contraction of give me, both end in E.
75
There's also this word that causes a lot of confusion.
76
What do we call the instructions you use to help you cook something?
77
It's a recipe, not receipt or recite.
78
Another exception is the word anime, which ends with the A diphthong.
79
Next, we have the silent H at the end of words.
80
In In English, the H sound can't come at the end of a word.
81
The letters A -H are usually just pronounced as a schwa.
82
Like in the names Sarah, Hannah, Noah and Mika.
83
The H is silent.
84
We can also see this A -H combination at the end of words like hurrah and cheetah.
85
You'll also see quite a few words ending in the letters C, H.
86
Here, the H isn't technically silent.
87
Instead, it combines with the letter C to make a k sound,
88
like in stomach, patriarch, and monarch.
89
Interestingly, all of these words have come to English via Latin from Greek.
90
Next, we have the silent N.
91
Never pronounce the letter N at the end of words like dam,
92
hymn, solemn, condemn, autumn, and column.
93
These words all end in the letters MN but just finish with a mm sound.
94
And remember, be careful when adding a suffix to these words because sometimes the silent N reappears.
95
For example, autumn, autumnal.
96
Column, columnist.
97
Although a lot of people prefer to just say columnist.
98
It's technically columnist, but columnist is very common.
99
Use whichever works best for you.
100
There's only one word that ends with a silent P and it's a word with French origins.
101
Coup.
102
Coup.
103
It's also silent in the phrase coup d 'etat.
104
Notice the silent T at the end there too.
105
More on silent T's soon.
106
Let's practice the silent H, N and P words now.
107
Shadow me or listen, pause and repeat after me.
108
Sarah wrote a solemn column this autumn, condemning the Patriarch's coup d 'etat.
109
Did you notice the silent T at the end of coup d 'etat?
110
More on that soon.
111
Now for the silent R at the end of words.
112
Well, in my modern received pronunciation accent, all R's are silent at the end of words like in guitar tower
113
and armor i only pronounce the letter r before a vowel sound
114
i've made a whole video on this i've put a link in the description check it out
115
if you're still not sure about the silent r next up
116
is the silent s at the end of words we have a few words from French that end in a silent S.
117
We have a few nouns like debris or daybri, corps, faux pas, and rendezvous.
118
Take care with these nouns.
119
Even though debris ends with a silent S, it's an uncountable noun.
120
Corps, faux pas, and rendezvous are all countable, but don't change their spelling in the plural.
121
But we do pronounce the S when they're plural, and each plural is pronounced with the voiced zz sound,
122
cause, faux pas, and rendezvous.
123
We've also got the preposition vis -a -vis, meaning in relation to, and the US states Illinois and Arkansas.
124
Never pronounce the S at the end of these words.
125
Let's look at some silent T words now.
126
Continuing with the French theme,
127
never pronounce the letter T at the end of these words ballet gourmet buffet i hear these words pronounced ballot
128
and buffet all the time but the t is silent
129
so the word ends in the a vowel sound ballet gourmet
130
buffet some people do choose to pronounce the t in buffet
131
buffet uh it's not very common you will find it in some dictionaries Some more A words are crochet and chalet.
132
And then we also have depot and rapport.
133
Time to practise the silent R, S and T at the end of words.
134
Shadow me or repeat after me.
135
The ballet dancer from Arkansas made a faux pas when he forgot to prepare gourmet sandwiches for the buffet.
136
We don't really have any silent U words, but we do have a lot of words ending in a silent UE.
137
Words like league and colleague,
138
rogue and vague, also catalogue and dialogue.
139
In these words, the letters G and U combine to make a G sound.
140
The letters UE are silent, so they all end with a G sound.
141
In fact, catalogue and dialogue both end with the letter G in North American spelling, just like this.
142
We also have tongue that ends with the NG sound, tongue.
143
we have a couple of words with a silent x at
144
the end shoe yes it sounds like a shoe you put on your foot
145
but this is a kind of pastry faux as in fake
146
and faux pas and you guessed it they are french
147
and finally just one silent zed word shay shay this is
148
another french word we use in english meaning at the house of.
149
Let's practice those silent letters now.
150
Shadow me or repeat after me.
151
She thanked her colleague for the shoe pastry with a faux smile.
152
Right, my lovely students, that brings us to the end of today's pronunciation lesson.
153
