1
On Friday, during a state visit by Prime General Secretary and President Tô Lâm to Canada, the two nations elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
2
Built on eight pillars, the landmark upgrade places trade, investment and high technology front and center.
3
Here's a look at the joint efforts already driving that momentum on the ground.
4
in august 2026 a major vietnamese technology group extended its partnership
5
with a leading canadian ai research institute deepening their research collaboration after six years of cooperation
6
that collaboration has already produced over 160 scientific papers five international patents
7
and trained dozens of researchers the push to turn research into to practical applications is also attracting other Canadian innovators to Vietnam.
8
A Canadian medical technology company has developed a breakthrough molecular analysis platform for cancer care.
9
Now, they are setting their sights on Vietnam.
10
Canada has tons of competency in developing unique technology and science.
11
And what we saw in Vietnam is that ability and that competency in engineering, in scaling, in technology, in manufacturing.
12
So we really appreciate the opportunity to join both countries to bring a technology
13
that is built in Canada or developed in Canada and built in Vietnam with superior engineering, manufacturing and quality.
14
The synergy is equally strong in digital security.
15
With over 400 million devices protected and 10 billion annual transactions monitored globally,
16
a Canadian cybersecurity leader has established a solid presence in Vietnam, actively investing in the development of local engineering talent.
17
We also are now starting to do work in the government sector around protecting against all the threats
18
that AI is bringing into.
19
So we've always held close ties.
20
I think we've always been optimistic
21
that having those good relationships is going to continue to help us as we scale the business.
22
Trade is a key pillar of the bilateral relationships.
23
Vietnam is currently Canada's sixth largest source of imports globally and is largest in ASEAN,
24
accounting for 43 .6 % of Canada's total imports from the region.
25
This clearly signals that businesses on both sides are turning to each other for intermediate inputs in processing.
26
This allows them to better leverage cumulative roles of origin in their production and sourcing strategies.
27
Cooperation is also expanding into previously untapped fields, such as energy, critical minerals and dual -use defense industries.
28
Only 18 percent of Vietnamese shipments currently claim CPTPP tariff preferences,
29
while more than 40 percent of bilateral cargo still passes through third countries.
30
What both Vietnam and Canada need to do is to develop our strategic capabilities
31
so that we can continue to have national economic security and economic resilience.
32
And the way that we do that is by reducing our dependence or vulnerability to any one particular market,
33
but diversifying our economic partners.
34
And we just happen to be very like -minded countries that have shared values, a shared commitment to rules -based trade.
35
That's a good foundation for Canada -Vietnam cooperation.
36
And we see Vietnam as a gateway to Southeast Asia and to the Indo -Pacific more broadly.
37
Vietnam and Canada are entering a new chapter in their relationship,
38
with both sides looking to move beyond traditional trade and build deeper cooperation in technology and innovation for businesses.
39
Now the question is how these ambitions can translate into practical partnerships and new opportunities.
40
Our reporter spoke with Zach Herbers, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, to have a closer look.
41
So first of all, thank you very much for joining us for this interview.
42
Thanks for being here, it's a pleasure.
43
So as the bilateral ties between Vietnam and Canada are entering a new stage this week,
44
what are the top opportunities for Canadian businesses to look at in Vietnam right now?
45
A lot of Vietnam's priorities in the medium and long term match Canada's expertise.
46
So whether that's food and energy security, tech, research development, artificial intelligence.
47
Currently, Vietnam is Canada's largest trading partner within the ASEAN region.
48
It has been for quite some time.
49
That amount has reached over 20 billion Canadian dollars.
50
From Canada, it's a lot of commodity resource -based products.
51
From Vietnam, it's a lot in terms of manufactured goods.
52
But again, we're looking to the future to continue that growth, but also move towards new partnerships in energy, food security, tech and R &D, and much, much more.
53
For both countries, and when we look at the historical trade between Canada and Vietnam, it tends to be very much transactional,
54
focused mostly on commodities and short -term sort of trade.
55
While that's been growing year over year and will continue to,
56
I think the challenge is for both countries to take the time to invest in developing longer -term relationships built on trust.
57
And I think through that will come more long -term investments and strategic initiatives across, again, all sectors.
58
So AI and semiconductors are two of the top priorities of Vietnam right now.
59
Where do you see the most realistic form of cooperation between the two sides in these fields?
60
Well, Canada has a lot of world -class expertise, especially in the artificial intelligence space.
61
For example, Amy in Edmonton, Mila in Montreal, who are actually a partner of FPT, of course, one of Vietnam's leading IT and software companies.
62
University of Waterloo in Ontario and others.
63
There's been years and years of development taking place.
64
So Canada is always eager to look at opportunities to commercialize and to develop further with international partners.
65
We know Vietnam of course is investing a lot in these areas as well, upgrading its manufacturing clusters and advanced manufacturing capabilities,
66
rapid development of the workforce.
67
So we look forward, I think there's a lot of synergy to see what we can do together.
68
And looking at the bigger pictures, what are the potentials for fields between Vietnam and Canada in decarbonization or the circular economy?
69
When you look at energy, for example, decarbonization, nuclear, carbon capture, utilization, storage, LNG,
70
there's a lot there in terms of education and training
71
and development that can be done together to help meet Vietnam's strategic goals.
72
Same would be true in other areas, you know, waste or water technologies.
73
But again, these can't just be one -sided arrangements.
74
They have to be beneficial for both countries
75
and that's where the long -term trust and relationship comes in
76
and that's what we've been seeing build and build and build over the past decades.
77
As the relationship between Canada and Vietnam grows, as trust and long -term partnership develops,
78
there will be a lot of opportunities for the two countries to work collaboratively for mutual benefit on energy security.
79
So once again, thank you very much for joining this interview.
80
Thanks for having me, it was a pleasure.

About This Lesson

This lesson helps you practice language learning through real-world content, focusing on speaking practice and pronunciation practice. You’ll analyze a video about Vietnam-Canada relations, improving your ability to understand and replicate formal, analytical speech. By the end, you’ll feel more confident with complex topics like trade and technology, while honing your listening and speaking skills.

Key Vocabulary & Phrases

  • Strategic partnership: A long-term collaboration between countries or businesses with shared goals.
  • Tariff preferences: Special tax reductions on imported goods, often part of trade agreements.
  • Economic resilience: A country’s ability to recover from economic shocks, like market changes or shortages.
  • Synergy: The combined effect of two elements working together, which is greater than their individual effects.
  • Dual-use: Technologies or products that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

Practice Tips

The video features formal, informative speech with a moderate pace, making it ideal for shadowing technique practice. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Focus on intonation in key terms: Words like "strategic partnership" or "economic resilience" are emphasized to convey importance. Repeat these phrases, mimicking the rise and fall of the speaker’s voice to sound more natural in formal contexts.
  • Pause and break down complex sentences: Sentences about trade statistics (e.g., "Vietnam is currently Canada's sixth largest source of imports globally") can be long. Pause after each clause, then repeat the entire sentence to build fluency with structured speech.
  • Imitate clear pronunciation of technical terms: Terms like "CPTPP" (a trade agreement) or "molecular analysis" require precise enunciation. Listen closely to how the speaker pronounces each syllable, then repeat until your pronunciation matches. This will boost your confidence in discussing specialized topics.
  • Match the speaker’s calm tone: The video’s analytical tone demands a steady, clear delivery. Practice speaking at a similar pace—neither too fast nor too slow—to ensure your message is understood. This helps with speaking practice in professional or academic settings.

By focusing on these elements, you’ll not only improve your pronunciation and fluency but also gain confidence in using specialized vocabulary—key skills for effective English communication.
