125
We're traveling in late June and haven't seen much rain.
126
At least not yet.

136
We're gonna try it later tonight at dinner.

Most passengers were continuing their journey onward to Oslo, so they had a train to catch, but we have other plans.
138
We left Bergen at 8.30 this morning and arrived here in Flam about six hours later, and that means we still have plenty of time to explore.
139
Great first day.
140
Made it here to Flam, which is our stop overnight.
141
Tomorrow we'll make our way onto Oslo.
142
We'd booked a room here at the Fretheim Hotel, located right in the heart of town, but we didn't want to stay in this room too long.
143
There's just too much to see out there.
144
So while you could cover the entire route between Bergen and Oslo in a single, full day, We chose to stay overnight in Flam, give ourselves some time to explore a little, so we're going on a hike.
145
I don't know about you, but this is just absolutely incredible.
146
Watch out for the cow poop.
147
The best part of taking this break was the chance to see Norway a little closer.
148
So far, we've been moving so fast, we've missed these details.
149
We even got a glimpse of the train we'll be on tomorrow.
150
But at this point, we were ready for a workout.
151
It's time to climb.
152
Is it time to burn off those hot dogs one step at a time?
153
Yes it is.
154
Burn off those dogs one step at a time.
155
The Brekkafossen waterfall hike is a short distance from Flom
156
and is a great way to stretch our legs at the end of this day.
157
I think I highly understand why they said don't go chasing waterfalls.
158
After about 20 minutes of steady climbing, we reached our destination.
159
At a bit more than 500 feet over the valley, we enjoyed a commanding view.
160
The view from the top is always worth the effort.
161
That was a pretty steep climb, which makes sense.
162
We're on the side of a fjord.
163
As you do in Norway.
164
As we began our hike back down to town, the rain started in earnest.
165
There's no bad weather, only bad clothes.
166
We're both wearing the right shoes, that's most important, and we've got the right outer layer for the rain, which we didn't expect until later.
167
But hey, Norway's got a Norway, you know what I mean?
168
I've got toilets everywhere in Norway.
169
This country is just incredible in terms of infrastructure.
170
You've got nothing to worry about when you come here.
171
Norway for the win.
172
Before long, we were back in town, right near the train station where we'll leave tomorrow.
173
I've never seen this before.
174
That's a device to wash train windows.
175
It's a good sign.
176
Hopefully, we'll get some good views tomorrow.
177
You might have heard that Norway is expensive, and it definitely is.
178
There's a grocery store in town and some takeaway spots where you can eat on the cheap.
179
We're going to treat ourselves tonight and eat out at a restaurant.
180
So let's check it out, and we'll let you know what it costs.
181
We ate at the local brew pub.
182
Their menu featured local dishes made with ingredients from nearby farms.
183
Like this salad with goat cheese from the town we'd seen in the ferry earlier today.
184
I had the lamb sausages, which I've been dreaming about ever since.
185
And Suzanne had the pork wing, which was equally delicious.
186
Now sure, everything is expensive here, but this meal is one we're going to remember for a long time to come.
187
And that's a wrap on day one.
188
It was so jam-packed.
189
I don't know why they call it a nutshell.
190
It needs a name that's way bigger than that.
191
This was a lot.
192
But we're going to head to bed now to wake up tomorrow for another journey.
193
This time, two trains on the way to Oslo.
194
The sun continued to shine well into the night.
195
It won't set until after 11 o'clock tonight.
196
And the next day came quickly.
197
Sunrise was before 4 a.m.
198
We enjoyed a buffet breakfast with international and local favorites before striking out on another adventure.
199
We are about to hop on the Flamsbana, that's about an hour-long train.
200
It'll take us up 3,000 feet up the side of the fjord.
201
Some amazing views there.
202
before we hop on the other train today, on to Oslo.
203
So, hope you'll join us for another day here in Norway in a nutshell.
204
I don't think that's our train.
205
I think our train is over there.
206
Is that right?
207
Yeah, that's our train, that's our train.
208
You know, somebody's always gonna be first in line and today it's Suzanne.
209
We really weren't sure what time to show up.
210
There's no assigned seats on this train, so we wanted to be here definitely early.
211
Now we arrived at 7.45 for our train's scheduled departure at 8.20 this morning.
212
It's an hour long trip up to Myrdal.
213
Our train is the first one out of Flam this morning, which is a great hack we'd recommend to you to avoid crowds.
214
You see, Flam is a major cruise destination, and these trains can fill up with cruisers.
215
It's a really good idea to book an early train before the cruise ships are even in port.
216
There was space at the front of our car for suitcases, and our backpacks fit easily over our seats.
217
This is a really cool, older train.
218
The best advice we dug up encouraged us to sit on the right side of the train for this leg, but more about that later.
219
In no time, Flam was behind us, and we were in the beautiful countryside where we'd hiked yesterday.
220
Now, every phone with a camera was aimed out the windows.
221
This was the best scenery we'd encountered yet, and that's really saying something, because we've seen so much already.
222
The Flam Railway is a true engineering marvel.
223
It's the steepest railway run on regular gauge in the world.
224
80% of the journey is at an incredibly steep 5.5% gradient.
225
The line is a mere 12.5 miles, but we'll pass through 20 tunnels that twist underneath and and through mountains.
226
This is absolutely one of the world's most beautiful train journeys.
227
Construction began in 1924 but wasn't finished until 1940.
228
You can still spot the road used to build the railway.
229
We stepped off briefly at the Shostfassen waterfall, where everyone who wants gets a free shower.
230
Oh, well, that'll wake you up.
231
Our destination, Myrdal, is where you can connect to the main line to Bergen or Oslo.
232
This town is inaccessible by road.
233
The only way to get here is by train, which made it even more impressive to see the massive crowd we encountered as we stepped off.
234
Everyone got here by rail.
235
And that right there is why you want to take the first train.
236
There's a lot of hype around this train.
237
It's been named the most scenic multiple times.
238
And my standards are kinda high, but I gotta say, jam-packed scenery start to finish.
239
for the right side of the train, but it's not like the left side is disappointing at all.
240
It's sort of divided into thirds, I would say.
241
The beginning third is good on the right side coming up, the middle third good on the left side, and then the final third good on the right side.
242
So that's why I think people say the right side, but you're going to be happy either way.
243
On to Oslo.
244
The train that brought us up the mountain began its journey back down, and we waited about 30 minutes for our train to arrive.
245
The train to Oslo should come out of that tunnel right there any minute now.
246
This will be the longest leg of the journey.
247
It should take about five hours to reach Oslo.
248
This is the first time since the train from Bergen when we had assigned seats.
249
We'd upgraded this leg of the trip to plus class, which affords a bit more leg room and free coffee and tea.
250
The bathrooms on board were clean and, for lack of a better word, forested.
251
There were also plugs at each seat.
252
And once more, we easily found space for our luggage and settled in for even more amazing scenery.
253
Now, it was during this lag that I became most grateful we'd broken up our trip with an overnight in Flamme.
254
Had we continued on yesterday without stopping, I might have fallen asleep and missed some of my favorite scenery of this whole trip.
255
Because we're climbing even higher, we're anticipating alpine views, and we certainly were not disappointed.
256
A quick reminder here, this is late June.
257
These landscapes couldn't be more different from the ones we've seen so far.
258
We're arriving at Finca.
259
This is the highest point on this line at 4,200 feet.
260
Sometimes, the scenery should just speak for itself.
261
But as impressive as the views outside were, we decided to explore the train a bit.
262
There's a car specially built for families, complete with a playground.
263
How great is that?
264
But we discovered what we were looking for, the cafe car.
265
There's a selection of snacks, along with a menu with cold items and one with hot items.
266
Susanne ordered the lasagna.
267
But if you've watched this channel before and you saw this menu, you knew I couldn't pass up the meatballs.
268
We lingered in the cafe car over views that didn't let up as we sped closer to Oslo.
269
Now before we talk about what we paid for this trip, let's start where we began this trip.
270
Let's start where we began.
271
Is it worth the hype?
272
Most definitely.
273
It has to be one of the most jam-packed with scenery.
274
It's also relatively accessible, well-organized, and as a result fairly easy for most tourists to do.
275
But that means a trade-off.
276
You won't be alone.
277
Expect crowds, and big ones, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go.
278
Follow our lead and travel early in the day.
279
That way you may have a better chance at finding some elbow room along the way.
280
Now, taking this trip in a single day from Bergen to Oslo, or vice versa, costs around $350 per person for transportation only.
281
That's the tickets on the trains, bus, and ferry.
282
You can book it using the Norway in a Nutshell website.
283
However, we wanted to extend our trip and spend some time along the way, so we got help customizing our nutshell from railbookers.
284
They help with everything from booking our preferred hotel in Oslo right next to the train station to advising on
285
which side of the train to sit on along the way.
286
A trip like ours, over four days and three nights starts at $1,150.
287
But for the specific dates and hotels that we selected, we paid about $1,500 each.
288
If you'd like help planning this trip or any other rail adventures worldwide, head to railbookers.com slash greenergrass.
289
If you choose to book with them, we'll earn a small commission, which we'll use to bring you even more videos.
290
And it's time to start working on our next one because we've arrived in Oslo right on time.
291
Between now and the next time, see you on the rails.
292
Only husbands will understand.
293
Can't miss the shot.
294
Hiking paused.
295
Are you gonna miss the shot?
296
Not gonna miss my shot.
297
Rick said this was the Sunbelt compared to Bergen.
298
I don't know if I was expecting such an intense hike.
299
I was not fully expecting that we were gonna be taking a true hike.
300
I thought it was a little walk around town.
301
So I am not dressed appropriately, but it was totally worth it.
302
What'd you think of the flumps, bottom?
303
Bottom.
304
Bono.
305
Let me try that again.
306
Behind the scenes.
307
That's how the magic happens.
308
We like long layovers between our traits.
309
Why? For this.
