1
Plastic isn't the problem we've been told it is.
2
We've been told it's this terrible stuff that won't naturally rot away
3
and contaminate our environment for hundreds if not thousands of years.
4
But recent research has made it increasingly clear that this just isn't so.
5
The true stories both better and worse.
6
I have a brief summary.
7
Environmental protection organizations have preached for half a century that plastic degrades very, very slowly.
8
The Worldwide Fund for Nature, for example, says that plastic bottles last 450 years.
9
According to the United Nations Environment Program, it can take thousands or even tens of thousands of years for plastic to degrade.
10
And according to Greenpeace, plastic never goes away.
11
You may ask, indeed, I think you should ask, how do they know, given that plastic didn't become widely used until about a century ago?
12
And haven't any of these people ever seen plastic garden furniture?
13
You can basically see the stuff rotting away with your own eyes.
14
So what's really going on?
15
We think of plastic as the epitome of an artificial product, but I think that artificial is not a helpful terminology.
16
We're part of nature and I don't see why something we produce is any less natural than what other living beings produce.
17
I think it makes more sense to refer to plastic as man -made
18
or human -made if you want to be politically super correct.
19
Plastics made of long chains of molecules called polymers and primarily produced from fossil fuels.
20
That makes it what chemists call organic.
21
Though plastics that we use in everyday life almost always contain other chemicals, many inorganic, to add color or elasticity or stability.
22
That's right, plastics often have other chemicals added to make them more durable.
23
This already tells you that the idea that plastics don't decay is somewhat questionable.
24
Indeed, we know today that plastics begin to break down into smaller and smaller fragments incredibly quickly,
25
giving rise to micro and later nanoplastics that have now spread around the entire globe.
26
When this was first reported in 1972 by Edward Carpenter and Kenneth Smith, Other scientists weren't just surprised.
27
They were openly hostile.
28
According to Carpenter, the colleagues thought that the paper should never have been published and he was told to stick to biology.
29
They were perfectly right, though.
30
Micro and nanoplastics are now to be found anywhere from the Sahara Desert to the Arctic to the oceans.
31
We literally eat and breathe the stuff.
32
Now, that plastic fragments doesn't mean that it entirely chemically decays,
33
but it does effectively increase the surface of the plastic and that means it becomes much more susceptible to sunlight, abrasion and chemical reactions.
34
The shedding of micro and nanoplastics happened surprisingly quickly.
35
A 2016 researcher showed
36
that it took less than two months for a plastic coffee cup to shed nanoparticles
37
when in water and exposed to UV light.
38
Last year then, a group from Northeastern University measured how fast these particles undergo photodegradation in water,
39
that is, how fast the polymers break apart into carbon dioxide other gases and other organic and inorganic substances.
40
They estimated that a polystyrene particle with about one millimeter diameter would need about five and a half years,
41
whereas a polypropylene particle with merely 100 nanometers diameter would fall apart in about half a year.
42
This is roughly compatible with a finding from 2024,
43
which found that a millimeter -sized plastic particle takes about half a year to decompose in water illuminated by light.
44
It's also roughly compatible with a 2026 study from a Chinese group
45
that looked at the decay of thin sheets of polypropylene and found a half -life of about a month.
46
These are all data for specific types of plastic under specific circumstances.
47
They don't tell us, for example, what happens to trash buried in soil.
48
But my takeaway is that it's probably not going to take 10 ,000s of years for plastic to decompose.
49
Let me be clear that I'm not saying that plastic is not a problem.
50
It very clearly is.
51
It's terrible for birds and fish who swallow it and even if it dissolves, it leaves behind potentially toxic chemicals.
52
I'm not saying that plastic is not a problem.
53
I'm just saying that the problem isn't that plastic doesn't decay.
54
Indeed, I'd go so far to say that it'd be better if it wouldn't decay, that'd make it easier to remove,
55
and it'd keep the carbon stored.
56
We have also known for a decade that some bacteria have evolved the ability to digest plastic.
57
There's also been a story that mealworms can do this too, but this hasn't been independently reproduced and has remained somewhat controversial.
58
In any case, seeing that plastics contain a lot of usable chemical energy,
59
it seems likely to me that some soil microbes will soon learn to digest it.
60
What about the health effects of ingesting microplastics?
61
I went through this in a recent video.
62
And to make a long story short, there's currently no convincing evidence that microplastics have detrimental health effects.
63
This does not mean they have no health effects.
64
It merely means that the evidence is weak or non -existent.
65
The story
66
that plastic could take tens of thousands of years to rot was widely spread despite not having any evidence behind it whatsoever.
67
It's only now that we get to see the numbers.
68
Unfortunately, it might just be that the myth will live longer than the plastic itself.
69
I find it difficult to think about how much we've damaged our environment, but I feel much better since I have joined
70
Planet Wild, because it shows me that together we can help nature recover.
71
Planet Wild is a community -based environmental protection organization.
72
They're funding the restoration of ecosystems to preserve our nature and wildlife by partnering with different organizations every month.
73
I've been part of their community for years now, and I've been really impressed by their work.
74
They document all their projects with video reports that you can find right here on YouTube, so you can see your impact right away.
75
In their recent mission, they brought wildlife back to the city of Bristol by planting wetlands.
76
This is a lovely example of the hands -on work that
77
Planet Wild is doing.
78
Joining Planet Wild is a simple yet effective way to help this planet.
79
So if you want to do something that matters, join Planet Wild.
80
You can contribute whatever amount feels right.

Từ vựng và ghi chú luyện nói cho bài học này

Bài luyện nói này dựa trên video “Plastic Isn’t The Problem You’ve Been Made To Believe”.
