In today's lesson, you
2
and I will be going on an adventure together as we explore the highs
3
and lows of the illustrious Canada whilst improving your everyday English.
4
Now, if you don't know what illustrious means,
5
don't worry, because by the end of the video you will,
6
along with a bunch of other native expressions and advanced pieces of vocabulary
7
that will help you to sound so much more fluent.
8
Now, as always, everything from today's lesson will be included in a completely free PDF,
9
and the link to that is in the top comment.
10
Okay then, let's do this.
11
Let's start off in Toronto, the capital.
12
Although it isn't actually the capital,
13
I feel like it really should be,
14
you know, it's definitely the most well-known place in Canada.
15
It's kind of like how in Australia,
16
the capital city isn't Sydney or Melbourne,
17
which, you know, why not?
18
These are the two most famous places in that country.
19
Never mind.
20
Anyway, this was my first impression of Toronto.
21
And you know what?
22
It actually looks really nice.
23
So your first impression of something is your initial opinion of it when you experience it for the first time.
24
And when we say, you know what,
25
this is just a natural phrase we use when we want to introduce a new thought or opinion,
26
often when what we're about to say may sound slightly surprising.
27
Right then, so the first thing we need to do is get some food,
28
and this is what I went for.
29
Now, I'm just going to be honest,
30
on this trip I went absolutely pasta crazy crazy.
31
I could not get enough of it.
32
So if you say that you are something crazy,
33
such as pasta crazy, it just means that you really,
34
really like that thing.
35
And this is a very native piece of everyday slang.
36
And secondly, if you say that you can't get enough of something,
37
it means that you enjoy it so much that you always want more of it and you never feel satisfied.
38
Not like an addiction, but well, like a light-hearted addiction.
39
Anyway, after my meal I went to visit possibly the most underwhelming landmark in the entire universe.
40
Seriously, this is just rubbish, bro.
41
So if something's underwhelming it just means that it's disappointing or not as good as you expected it to be.
42
And secondly, rubbish is a British way of referring to trash,
43
which is the American way.
44
Or, as is the case here,
45
it can also be British slang to say that something isn't very good.
46
But you know what isn't rubbish?
47
This video!
48
Ah, thank you, I appreciate that.
49
No, no, well this video isn't rubbish, obviously.
50
But also, the nature in Canada is not rubbish.
51
In fact, it's actually quite brilliant.
52
And it also provides the perfect opportunity to teach you some new vocabulary.
53
So let's start off with Niagara Falls,
54
which honestly was kind of incredible.
55
It was even better than I expected.
56
So yeah, this was definitely not underwhelming,
57
but it wasn't overwhelming either.
58
Let me explain.
59
So as we know, underwhelming means disappointing,
60
which is of course negative.
61
So you might assume that the opposite word,
62
overwhelming, means that it is positive.
63
Well, no, because it actually means that something can be
64
so intense or powerful or strong that is actually quite hard to process or handle.
65
You become overwhelmed, which isn't a good thing.
66
So whilst it can sometimes be positive if you are speaking about something good,
67
such as the support was overwhelming or the kindness of the people was overwhelming,
68
to be honest, I'd say that more often than not it actually suggests
69
that something is too much to take in
70
and it's too much for your senses or emotions to handle and therefore you become overwhelmed which as mentioned is negative.
71
So for example a very natural way of using this would be the noise in the city was overwhelming
72
or the amount of work I had to do was overwhelming.
73
So in these examples it's not positive.
74
It means there's so much happening that it feels difficult to cope with.
75
Anyway, let me just show you a few more shots of nature,
76
and in this case, shots refers to video footage or photos of something,
77
and then we'll find some natural and native ways to describe them.
78
So firstly, let's look at this woodland bridge thing,
79
which was actually in Vancouver.
80
Now, this place was breathtaking,
81
serene, and honestly quite invigorating.
82
Breathtaking means it's beautiful, so beautiful it takes your breath away.
83
Serene means beautiful and also peaceful,
84
and if something's invigorating, it makes you feel fresh,
85
alive, and full of energy.
86
So next up we have these guys, the parrot...
87
No, I shouldn't be on the screen,
88
it should be showing the video for...
89
Thank you, thank you, god.
90
It's not hard, is it?
91
Anyway, here are some parrots,
92
who are not only very cute,
93
but also vibrant, meaning very colourful,
94
exotic, meaning interesting because they're from a distant place,
95
and finally mesmerising, meaning they are so fascinating that you can't stop looking.
96
Now, of course, you can't make a video about Canada without talking about these guys.
97
Yes, we have actual grizzly...
98
Bro, I told you, I shouldn't be on the screen.
99
It should be the footage of the bears.
100
Bears.
101
Yes, thank you.
102
Thank you.
103
God, really?
104
Twice?
105
Anyway.
106
You can describe these bears as adorable, intimidating, or docile.
107
I'll give you a second to read the definitions,
108
you can pause the video if you want.
109
But honestly, they weren't actually very intimidating,
110
because they were being quite docile.
111
Yep, they were just chilling.
112
Now one thing I will say about Canada is that the food is really, really nice.
113
Yes, it's It's delicious.
114
It's unreal.
115
It's exquisite.
116
And those are the most common ways of saying that food tastes nice,
117
all with slightly different nuances,
118
which you can see on the screen now.
119
So apart from the tasty food, what else is there?
120
Well, let's wrap up by looking at some small,
121
random, everyday things, starting with this pizza vending machine.
122
Yep, that's pretty cool.
123
I thought these only existed in Japan, to be honest.
124
We also have this extremely weird and realistic sculpture of some people,
125
which honestly really scared me the first time I saw it.
126
We have loads of cute things,
127
which, you know, I'm all about.
128
That's kind of my vibe.
129
And last but definitely not least, we have...
130
Alcohol.
131
No, wait, that's bad.
132
Food.
133
Oh, no, wait, we've already done that.
134
Art.
135
We have art, okay?
136
And I'll put some of that on the screen now.
137
Very nice.
138
Anyway, you may have noticed that I used the phrase last but not least,
139
and this is a very common expression for when you're talking about the final thing that you wanted to mention,
140
just to make it very clear that it is as important as everything else before it.
141
So you're saying it's the last thing,
142
yes, but it's definitely not the least important thing.
143
And I also said, let's wrap this up,
144
and that just means that we're going to finish something or bring it to an end.
145
So it's often used when ending a conversation,
146
a meeting, or in this case, a brilliant YouTube video.
147
Yeah, so overall, Canada is great.
148
It's full of lovely people.
149
Toronto is fun, vibrant, crazy, and exciting.
150
Whereas Vancouver is boring, boring,
151
boring, and bo- I'm joking.
152
I actually prefer Vancouver, and it isn't boring at all.
153
It's just more chill, relaxed but there is still a lot going on.
154
In fact I'm genuinely considering moving there.
155
Yeah that would be nice.
156
Anyway and there we have it.
157

169

170

171
