In today's lesson, you

and I will be going on an adventure together as we explore the highs

and lows of the illustrious Canada whilst improving your everyday English.

Now, if you don't know what illustrious means,

don't worry, because by the end of the video you will,

along with a bunch of other native expressions and advanced pieces of vocabulary

that will help you to sound so much more fluent.

Now, as always, everything from today's lesson will be included in a completely free PDF,

and the link to that is in the top comment.

Okay then, let's do this.

Let's start off in Toronto, the capital.

Although it isn't actually the capital,

I feel like it really should be,

you know, it's definitely the most well-known place in Canada.

It's kind of like how in Australia,

the capital city isn't Sydney or Melbourne,

which, you know, why not?

These are the two most famous places in that country.

Never mind.

Anyway, this was my first impression of Toronto.

And you know what?

It actually looks really nice.

So your first impression of something is your initial opinion of it when you experience it for the first time.

And when we say, you know what,

this is just a natural phrase we use when we want to introduce a new thought or opinion,

often when what we're about to say may sound slightly surprising.

Right then, so the first thing we need to do is get some food,

and this is what I went for.

Now, I'm just going to be honest,

on this trip I went absolutely pasta crazy crazy.

I could not get enough of it.

So if you say that you are something crazy,

such as pasta crazy, it just means that you really,

really like that thing.

And this is a very native piece of everyday slang.

And secondly, if you say that you can't get enough of something,

it means that you enjoy it so much that you always want more of it and you never feel satisfied.

Not like an addiction, but well, like a light-hearted addiction.

Anyway, after my meal I went to visit possibly the most underwhelming landmark in the entire universe.

Seriously, this is just rubbish, bro.

So if something's underwhelming it just means that it's disappointing or not as good as you expected it to be.

And secondly, rubbish is a British way of referring to trash,

which is the American way.

Or, as is the case here,

it can also be British slang to say that something isn't very good.

But you know what isn't rubbish?

This video!

Ah, thank you, I appreciate that.

No, no, well this video isn't rubbish, obviously.

But also, the nature in Canada is not rubbish.

In fact, it's actually quite brilliant.

And it also provides the perfect opportunity to teach you some new vocabulary.

So let's start off with Niagara Falls,

which honestly was kind of incredible.

It was even better than I expected.

So yeah, this was definitely not underwhelming,

but it wasn't overwhelming either.

Let me explain.

So as we know, underwhelming means disappointing,

which is of course negative.

So you might assume that the opposite word,

overwhelming, means that it is positive.

Well, no, because it actually means that something can be

so intense or powerful or strong that is actually quite hard to process or handle.

You become overwhelmed, which isn't a good thing.

So whilst it can sometimes be positive if you are speaking about something good,

such as the support was overwhelming or the kindness of the people was overwhelming,

to be honest, I'd say that more often than not it actually suggests

that something is too much to take in

and it's too much for your senses or emotions to handle and therefore you become overwhelmed which as mentioned is negative.

So for example a very natural way of using this would be the noise in the city was overwhelming

or the amount of work I had to do was overwhelming.

So in these examples it's not positive.

It means there's so much happening that it feels difficult to cope with.

Anyway, let me just show you a few more shots of nature,

and in this case, shots refers to video footage or photos of something,

and then we'll find some natural and native ways to describe them.

So firstly, let's look at this woodland bridge thing,

which was actually in Vancouver.

Now, this place was breathtaking,

serene, and honestly quite invigorating.

Breathtaking means it's beautiful, so beautiful it takes your breath away.

Serene means beautiful and also peaceful,

and if something's invigorating, it makes you feel fresh,

alive, and full of energy.

So next up we have these guys, the parrot...

No, I shouldn't be on the screen,

it should be showing the video for...

Thank you, thank you, god.

It's not hard, is it?

Anyway, here are some parrots,

who are not only very cute,

but also vibrant, meaning very colourful,

exotic, meaning interesting because they're from a distant place,

and finally mesmerising, meaning they are so fascinating that you can't stop looking.

Now, of course, you can't make a video about Canada without talking about these guys.

Yes, we have actual grizzly...

Bro, I told you, I shouldn't be on the screen.

It should be the footage of the bears.

and this is a very common expression for when you're talking about the final thing that you wanted to mention,

just to make it very clear that it is as important as everything else before it.

So you're saying it's the last thing,

And I also said, let's wrap this up,

and that just means that we're going to finish something or bring it to an end.

So it's often used when ending a conversation,

Yeah, so overall, Canada is great.

It's full of lovely people.
