The generation gap problem is a problem that began to be analyzed in the late 1960s.

In fact, the phrase generation gap dates from 1967, as far as we can tell.

Jonathan Green, who's a lexicographer, puts it at that particular year,

and that's very significant because that's the year of the summer of love of hippies

and all of the efflorescence of the Beatles and Sgt Pepper

and also it's a year when political protest was gaining momentum

so young people were defining themselves for the first time in

living memory over against the variation of their parents way of living their parents generation

if you like and that was all to do with the legacy of the Second World War, recovering from the austerity of World War II.

And young people with a bit more economic freedom, but also with the pill coming on stream and sexual permissiveness, were beginning to say, we have another way of living.

And so the so -called baby boom generation took hold.

And analysts from that point onwards began to see generational difference in terms of antipathy between the generations.

It hadn't been quite so acute before then, but it became quite acute after that.

And ever since, there's been a sort of analysis around every 20 years a new generation having to come through.

So Generation X followed the baby boomers.

So millennials followed Generation X.

And now people are starting to talk about Generation Z.

And they're all assumed to have their own characteristics and their own particular psyche.

But I would want to say that that's prone to really massive generalisation and we need a more biblical view of things.
