Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Today365.
2
You're watching our Read Aloud series where we pick one awesome book each month to read, learn and think together.
3
Today, we're diving into chapter 6 of Matilda, the platinum blonde man.
4
When he sees himself in the mirror, he's horrified, while Matilda secretly laughs.
5
Alright, let's dive in.
6
The Platinum Blonde Man
7
There was no doubt in Matilda's mind that this latest display of foulness by her father deserves severe punishment.
8
And as she sat eating her awful fried fish and fried chips and ignoring the television, her brain went to work on various possibilities.
9
By the time she went up to her bed, her mind was made up.
10
The next morning, she got up early and went into the bathroom.
11
As we already know, Mrs. Wormwood was dyed a brilliant platinum blot,
12
very much the same glistening silvery color as the female tightrope workers tied in the circus.
13
The big dying job was done twice a year as the hairdressers.
14
But every moment or so in the between, Mrs. Wormwood used to freshen it up by giving it a
15
reason in the wash basin with something called platinum blonde hair dye, extra strong.
16
This also served to dye the nasty brown hairs that keep growing from the root underneath.
17
The bottle of platinum blonde hair dye, extra strong, was kept in the cupboard in the bathroom.
18
And underneath the title on the label were written the words, Caution, this is peroxide.
19
Keep away from children.
20
Matilda had read it many times with fascination.
21
Matilda's father had a fine crop of black hair which she parted in the middle and of which she was exceedingly proud.
22
Good strong hair, he was fond saying, means there's a good strong brain underneath.
23
like shakespeare matilda had once said to him like who shakespeare
24
daddy was he brainy fairy daddy he had messes of hair did he he was bald daddy to
25
which the father had snapped if you can't talk sense then shut up
26
anyway mrs warmut kept his hair looking bright and strong
27
or he thought by rubbing into it every morning large quantities of a lotion called oil of violets hair tonic
28
A bottle of the smelly purple mixture always stood on the shelf above the sink in the bathroom alongside all the toothbrushes.
29
And a very vigorous sculpt message with oil of violets took place daily after shaving was completed.
30
This hair and sculpt message was always accompanied by loud masculine grunts and heavy breathing and gasps of,
31
ah, that's better, that's the stuff, rub it right into the roots,
32
which could be clearly heard by Matilda in her bedroom across the corridor.
33
Now, in the early morning privacy of the bathroom,
34
Matilda unscrewed the cap of her father's oil of violets and tipped three quarters of the contents down the drain.
35
Then she filled the bottle up with her mother's platinum blonde hair dye extra strong.
36
She carefully left enough of her father's original hair tonic in the bottle so that when she gave it a good shake,
37
the whole thing still looked reasonably purple.
38
She then replaced the bottle on the shelf above the sink, taking care to put her mother's bottle back in the cupboard.
39
So far, so good.
40
At breakfast time, Matilda sat quietly in the dining room table, eating her cornflakes.
41
Her brother sat opposite her with his back to the door, the boring hunks of bread smirtered with a mixture of peanut butter and strawberry jam.
42
The mother was just out of sight, around the corner in the kitchen, making Mr. Wormwood's breakfast,
43
which always had to be two fried eggs on fried bread with three pork sausages
44
and three stripes of bacon and some fried tomatoes.
45
At this point, Mr. Wormwood came noisily into the room.
46
He was incapable of entering any room quietly, especially at breakfast time.
47
He always had to make his appearance felt immediately by creating a lot of noise and clutter.
48
One could almost hear him saying it's me here i come
49
the great man himself the master of the house the wage
50
earner the one who makes it possible for all the rest of you to live so well
51
notice me and pay your respects on this occasion he strut in
52
and set his son on the back
53
and shouted well my boy he's in for another great money-making
54
day to-day at the garage i've got a few little beauties
55
i'm going to flock to the idiots this morning where's my
56
breakfast it's coming treasure mrs warmut called from the kitchen matilda
57
kept her face bent low over her cornflakes she didn't dare
58
look up in the first place she wasn't at all sure what she was going to see And secondly, if she did see what she thought she was going to see,
59
she wouldn't trust herself to keep straight face.
60
The son was looking directly ahead out of the window, stuffing himself with bread and peanut butter and strawberry jam.
61
The father was just moving around to sit at the head of the table
62
when the mother came sweeping out from the kitchen carrying a huge plate piled high with eggs
63
and sausages and bacon and tomatoes.
64
she looked up she caught sight of her husband she stopped dead then she let out a scream
65
that seemed to lift her right up into the air
66
and she dropped the plate with a crash
67
and a splash on the floor everyone jumped including mr warmood
68
what the heck's the matter with you woman he shouted look
69
at the mess you made on the carpet your hair the
70
mother was shrieking pointing a quivering finger at her husband look
71
at your hair what you've done to your hair what's wrong
72
with my hair for heaven's sake he said oh my god
73
dad what you've done to your hair the son shouted a
74
splendid noisy scene was building up nicely in the breakfast room
75
matilda said nothing she simply sat there admiring the wonderful effect
76
of her own handiwork mrs warmood's fine crop of black hair was now a dirty silver
77
the color this time of a tightrope worker's tights
78
that had not been washed for the entire circus season you've
79

80

81
a freak what the blaze are you talking about the father yelled putting both hands to his hair
82
i most certainly had not dyed it what do you mean i've dyed it what's happened to it
83
or is this some sort of a stupid joke his face
84
was turning pale green the color of sour apples you must
85
have dyed it dad the son said it's the same color
86
as mom's only much dirtier looking of course he dyed it the mother cried It can't change color all by itself.
87
What on earth were you trying to do?
88
Make yourself look handsome or something?
89
You look like someone's grandmother gone wrong.
90
Get me a mirror, the father yelled.
91
Don't just stand there, shrieking at me.
92
Get a mirror.
93
The mother's handbag lay on the chair at the other end of the table.
94
She opened the bag and got out a powder compact that had a small round mirror on the inside of the lid.
95
She opened the compact and handed it to her husband.
96
He grabbed it and held it and in doing
97
so spilled most of the powder all over the front of his fancy tweed jacket.
98
Be careful, shrieked the mother.
99
Now look what you've done.
100
That's my best Elizabeth Arden face powder.
101
Oh my God, yelled the father, staring into the little mirror.
102
What's happened to me?
103
I look terrible.
104
I look like you gone wrong.
105
I can't go down to the garage and sell car like this.
106
How did it happen?
107
He stared round the room.
108
First at the mother, then at the son, then at Matilda.
109
How could it be happened?
110
He yelled.
111
I imagine, Daddy, Matilda said quietly,
112
that you weren't looking very hard and you simply took Mommy's bottle of hair stuff off the shelf instead of your own.
113
Of course that's what happened, the mother cried.
114
Well, really, Harry, how stupid can you get?
115
Why didn't you read the label before you start splashing the stuff all over you?
116
Mine's terribly strong.
117
I'm only meant to use one tablespoon of it in a whole basin of water
118
and you've gone and put it all over your head neat.
119
It'll probably take all your hair off in the end.
120
Is your skull beginning to burn dear?
121
You mean I'm going to lose all my hair, the husband yelled.
122
I think you will, the mother said.
123
Peroxide is a very powerful chemical.
124
It's what they put down the lavatory to disinfect the pan.
125
Only they give it another name.
126
What are you saying?
127
The husband cried.
128
I'm not a lavatory pen.
129
I don't want to be disinfected.
130
Even diluted like I use it.
131
The mother told him.
132
It makes a good deal of my hair fall out.
133
So goodness knows what's going to happen to you.
134
I'm surprised it didn't take the whole of the top of your head off.
135
What shall I do?
136
Well, the father, tell me quick what to do before it starts falling out matilda said i've give it a good wash dad
137
if i were you with a soap and water
138
but you'll have to hurry will that change the color back the father asked anxiously
139
of course it won't you twit the mother said then what
140
do i do i can't go around looking like this forever you'll have to dye it black the mother said
141
but wash it first or there won't be any dare to dye right the father shouted
142
springing into action get me an appointment with your hairdresser this
143
instant for a hair-dying job tell them it's an emergency they've
144
got to boot someone else off their list i'm going upstairs to wash it now
145
with that the man dashed out of the room
146
and mrs formwood sighing deeply went to the telephone to call
147
the beauty parlor he does do some pretty silly things now and again doesn't he mommy matilda said The mother, dialing the number on the phone,
148
said, I'm afraid men are not always quiet as clever as they think they are.
149
You will learn that when you get a bit older, my girl.
150
In this chapter, Matilda secretly puts platinum blonde dye in her father's hair tonic, leaving him furious and embarrassed.
151
This clever prank shows her bold spirits and reminds us that even the smallest person can fight back with intelligence and courage.
152
In the next chapter, Matilda's cleverness grows and her parents keep underestimating her, but she has even more surprises ahead.
153
Hope you enjoyed.
154
See you soon.
