Lektion 10 · Etappe 1: Die Grundlagen
Fähigkeit mit „can / could“
AnfängerAbility with “can / could”
Form & Gebrauch
can/could + Verb — was jemand kann oder früher konnte
1.Form
Can + Grundform (ohne to). Can ist ein Modalverb: Es ist für jedes Subjekt gleich, bekommt nie ein -s und braucht in Fragen kein do.
| Beispiele | |
|---|---|
| Bejaht | I / you / he / she / we / they can swim. |
| Verneint | can't (= cannot, ein Wort) swim |
| Frage | Can you swim? · What can you see? |
| Kurzantwort | Yes, I can. / No, I can't. |
can und can't heraushören: Im bejahten Satz ist can schwach /kən/, und das Verb danach wird betont (I can SWIM). Can't ist immer betont: /kɑːnt/ (UK) oder /kænt/ (US) — I CAN'T swim.
2.Wann du es benutzt
1. Fähigkeiten — wissen, wie man etwas macht
My grandma can speak French.
Meine Oma kann Französisch.
I can't ride a motorbike.
Ich kann nicht Motorrad fahren.
You can see the whole city from the rooftop.
We can't go out — it's pouring.
Wir können nicht raus — es schüttet.
3. Um Erlaubnis bitten, sie geben oder verweigern
Can I sit here?
Kann ich mich hierhin setzen?
You can't park in front of the gate.
Vor dem Tor darfst du nicht parken.
4. Jemanden bitten, etwas zu tun (locker)
Can you pass me the salt?
Kannst du mir mal das Salz geben?
3.can see, can hear…
Bei den Sinnen see, hear, smell, taste, feel und bei remember, understand benutzt das Englische oft can statt der Verlaufsform.
I can hear music next door.
Ich höre Musik von nebenan. (nicht: I'm hearing)
Can you smell something burning?
Riechst du, dass da etwas anbrennt?
4.Vergangenheit: could / couldn't
She could read when she was four.
Mit vier konnte sie schon lesen.
I couldn't sleep last night. It was too hot.
Letzte Nacht konnte ich nicht schlafen. Es war zu heiß.
Wenn du sagen willst, dass dir eine bestimmte Sache bei einer bestimmten Gelegenheit gelungen ist, nimmst du was / were able to oder managed to, nicht bejahtes could:
The exam was hard, but I managed to finish it.
(nicht: I could finish it)
The fire spread quickly, but everyone was able to get out.
In der Verneinung passt couldn't für beide Fälle: I tried, but I couldn't open the jar.
5.Can hat keine Zukunfts- und keine Perfektform
Anders als das deutsche „können“ hat can nur zwei Formen: can und could. „will can“, „to can“ oder „have could“ gibt es nicht. Wenn du so eine Form brauchst, nimm be able to — siehe die nächste Lektion.
One day I'll be able to speak English fluently.
I'd love to be able to cook.
Ich würde so gern kochen können.
6.Typische Fehler

can bekommt nie ein -s.
I can to swim.I can swim.
Nach can kein to.

Bei can kein do.

Für die Zukunft nimmst du will be able to.
