La capacità con “can / could”

Principiante

Ability with “can / could”

Forma e uso

can/could + verbo — ciò che qualcuno sa fare, o sapeva fare

1.Forma

Can + forma base (senza to). Can è un verbo modale: è uguale per tutti i soggetti, non prende mai la -s e nelle domande non usa do.

Esempi
AffermativaI / you / he / she / we / they can swim.
Negativacan't (= cannot, tutto attaccato) swim
DomandaCan you swim? · What can you see?
Risposta breveYes, I can. / No, I can't.

Sentire la differenza tra can e can't: in una frase affermativa can è debole /kən/ e l'accento cade sul verbo che segue (I can SWIM). Can't è sempre accentato: /kɑːnt/ (UK) o /kænt/ (US) — I CAN'T swim.

2.Quando si usa

1. Capacità e abilità: saper fare qualcosa

  • My grandma can speak French.

    Mia nonna sa parlare francese.

  • I can't ride a motorbike.

    Non so andare in moto.

2. Possibilità in una situazione: quando le circostanze lo permettono

  • You can see the whole city from the rooftop.

Dal tetto si vede tutta la città.

  • We can't go out — it's pouring.

    Non possiamo uscire: sta diluviando.

3. Chiedere, dare e negare il permesso

  • Can I sit here?

    Posso sedermi qui?

  • You can't park in front of the gate.

Non puoi parcheggiare davanti al cancello.

4. Chiedere a qualcuno di fare qualcosa (informale)

  • Can you pass me the salt?

    Mi passi il sale?

3.can see, can hear…

Con i verbi dei sensi see, hear, smell, taste, feel e con remember, understand, l'inglese usa spesso can al posto della forma continuous.

  • I can hear music next door.

Sento della musica dai vicini. (non: I'm hearing)

  • Can you smell something burning?

    Senti odore di bruciato?

4.Passato: could / couldn't

Could = capacità generale nel passato (saper fare qualcosa per un certo periodo). Couldn't = non riuscire a fare qualcosa.

  • She could read when she was four.

    Sapeva leggere a quattro anni.

  • I couldn't sleep last night. It was too hot.

Stanotte non sono riuscito a dormire. Faceva troppo caldo.

Per dire che sei riuscito a fare una cosa precisa in un'occasione precisa, usa was / were able to o managed to, non could alla forma affermativa:

  • The exam was hard, but I managed to finish it.

L'esame era difficile, ma sono riuscito a finirlo. (non: I could finish it)

  • The fire spread quickly, but everyone was able to get out.

L'incendio si è propagato in fretta, ma tutti sono riusciti a uscire.

Alla forma negativa couldn't va bene in entrambi i casi: I tried, but I couldn't open the jar.

5.Can non ha futuro né forme perfect

Can ha solo due forme: can e could. Non esistono “will can”, “to can” o “have could”. Quando ti servono, usa be able to: vedi la prossima lezione.

  • One day I'll be able to speak English fluently.

Un giorno riuscirò a parlare inglese in modo fluente.

  • I'd love to be able to cook.

    Mi piacerebbe tanto saper cucinare.

6.Errori comuni

  • He cans play the guitar.

    He can play the guitar.

can non prende mai la -s.

  • I can to swim.

    I can swim.

    Niente to dopo can.

  • Do you can help me?

    Can you help me?

    Non usare do con can.

  • I will can come tomorrow.

I'll be able to come tomorrow.

Il futuro si esprime con will be able to.

  • She can sings well.

    She can sing well.

    Forma base dopo can.

Esempi

  • My little sister is five, but she can swim very well.
  • Sorry, I can't hear you. The music is too loud.
  • Can you speak Japanese?
  • A: Can your dad cook? B: Yes, he can. He makes great fish soup.
