Lezione 11 · Tappa 1: Le basi
“Be able to”
PrincipianteForma e uso
be able to + verbo — la capacità, in ogni tempo
1.Forma
be able to + forma base: riuscire a fare qualcosa, essere in grado di farla. Cambia solo be a seconda del tempo verbale (am / is / are, was / were, will be, have been…); able to e il verbo che segue restano uguali.
| Tempo | Affermativa | Negativa | Domanda |
|---|---|---|---|
| Presente | She's able to walk again. | She isn't able to walk. | Is she able to walk? |
| Passato | We were able to help. | We weren't able to help. | Were you able to help? |
| Futuro | I'll be able to come. | I won't be able to come. | Will you be able to come? |
| Present perfect | I've been able to save a bit. | I haven't been able to sleep. | Have you been able to rest? |
Le risposte brevi ripetono be / will / have: Yes, I was. / No, I won't. / No, I haven't. I'm unable to attend the meeting.
Able è un aggettivo (come tired o happy), quindi vuole sempre be davanti, proprio come dici I am tired. Molti studenti scrivono “I able to…” o “I don't able to…”. Le forme corrette sono I'm able to… / I'm not able to…
2.Quando serve be able to
Come hai visto nella lezione “La capacità con ‘can / could’”, can ha solo due forme: can e could. In tutti gli altri casi, al posto di can usa be able to.
1. Il futuro: will be able to / won't be able to
After this course, you'll be able to order food in English.
Sorry, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.
Mi dispiace, sabato non riuscirò a venire.
Quando organizzi o decidi adesso qualcosa per il futuro, can va ancora benissimo: I can see you tomorrow at ten. Ma quando la capacità non c'è ancora e arriverà solo più avanti (dopo un corso, quando sarai migliorato, quando avrai la macchina…), usa will be able to.
2. I tempi perfect: have / has been able to
I haven't been able to reach him all day.
Since she got glasses, she's been able to read the board clearly.
3. Dopo un altro verbo modale: might / may / should / must + be able to (due verbi modali non possono stare insieme)
Ask Minh — he might be able to fix it.
Chiedi a Minh: magari riesce a ripararlo lui. (non: might can)
Nurses must be able to stay calm.
Gli infermieri devono saper mantenere la calma.
4. Dopo to e nella forma in -ing: to be able to, being able to
I want to be able to talk to my customers in English.
Voglio riuscire a parlare in inglese con i miei clienti.
Being able to drive makes life much easier.
Lo stesso vale per used to: My grandpa used to be able to walk for hours. (Una volta ci riusciva, adesso non più.)
3.Presente: can o am / is / are able to?
I can speak a little Japanese.
Parlo un po' di giapponese. (il modo di tutti i giorni)
Customers are able to change their booking online.
I clienti possono modificare la prenotazione online. (avviso / formale)
After the operation, Grandpa is able to walk again.
(enfasi: adesso ci riesce)
4.Passato: could, was able to o managed to?
| Cosa vuoi dire | Usa | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| Capacità generale per un periodo (sapevi farlo) | could o was / were able to | At ten, I could swim a kilometre. |
| Riuscire a fare una cosa precisa, in un'unica occasione | was / were able to, managed to (non could) | The road was flooded, but we were able to get home. |
| Non riuscire (in entrambi i casi) | couldn't o wasn't / weren't able to | I couldn't find a parking space. |
Minh could run really fast when he was a kid.
Da bambino Minh correva velocissimo. (capacità generale)
Yesterday Minh managed to catch the last train.
Ieri Minh è riuscito a prendere l'ultimo treno. (un'occasione; non: could catch)
It was a tough match, but we were able to win.
The box was heavy, but I managed to carry it upstairs.
Negativa: didn't manage to (= couldn't).
Eccezione: con see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, remember, could va bene anche per una singola occasione: When I opened the door, I could smell smoke.
Test veloce: se alla frase potresti aggiungere “in the end” (alla fine) o “on that day” (quel giorno), si tratta di un'occasione precisa → was able to / managed to. Se intendi “all'epoca sapevo…” → could.
5.Errori comuni
I able to swim.I'm able to swim.
Able è un aggettivo: vuole be.
We weren't able find the hotel. We weren't able to find the hotel.
Dopo able c'è sempre to.
I don't able to come.I'm not able to come.
La negativa si fa con be + not, non con don't.
I hope I can be able to visit you.I hope I'll be able to visit you.
Non mettere insieme can e be able to.
The bus was late, but I could arrive on time. The bus was late, but I managed to arrive on time.
Un'occasione precisa → managed to / was able to, non could.
She has able to drive since last year. She has been able to drive since last year.
Tempo perfect: has been able to.
