Ders 11 · Aşama 1: Temeller
“Be able to”
BaşlangıçKalıp ve kullanım
be able to + fiil — her zamanda yetenek
1.Yapısı
be able to + yalın fiil — yapabilmek, bir şeyi yapabilecek durumda olmak. Zamana göre sadece be değişir (am / is / are, was / were, will be, have been…); able to ve ondan sonraki fiil hep aynı kalır.
| Zaman | Olumlu | Olumsuz | Soru |
|---|---|---|---|
| Şimdiki zaman | She's able to walk again. | She isn't able to walk. | Is she able to walk? |
| Geçmiş zaman | We were able to help. | We weren't able to help. | Were you able to help? |
| Gelecek zaman | I'll be able to come. | I won't be able to come. | Will you be able to come? |
| Present Perfect | I've been able to save a bit. | I haven't been able to sleep. | Have you been able to rest? |
Kısa cevaplarda be / will / have tekrarlanır: Yes, I was. / No, I won't. / No, I haven't. Olumsuz hal unable to ile de yapılabilir (biraz resmî): I'm unable to attend the meeting.
Öğrenciler sık sık “I able to…” ya da “I don't able to…” yazar. Doğrusu: I'm able to… / I'm not able to…
2.be able to ne zaman gerekir
“‘can / could’ ile yetenek” dersinde gördüğümüz gibi can'in sadece iki hali var: can ve could. Geri kalan her durumda can yerine be able to kullan.
1. Gelecek zaman — will be able to / won't be able to
After this course, you'll be able to order food in English.
Bu kurstan sonra İngilizce yemek siparişi verebileceksin.
Sorry, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.
Kusura bakma, cumartesi gelemeyeceğim.
Gelecek için şu an bir şey ayarlarken ya da karar verirken can yine doğal durur: I can see you tomorrow at ten. Ama yetenek henüz yoksa ve ancak daha sonra gelecekse (kurstan sonra, iyileşince, araban olunca…) will be able to kullan.
2. Perfect zamanlar — have / has been able to
I haven't been able to reach him all day.
Bütün gün ona ulaşamadım.
Since she got glasses, she's been able to read the board clearly.
Gözlük takmaya başladığından beri tahtayı net okuyabiliyor.
3. Başka bir modal fiilden sonra — might / may / should / must + be able to (iki modal fiil yan yana gelemez)
Ask Minh — he might be able to fix it.
Minh'e sor — belki o tamir edebilir. (might can değil)
Nurses must be able to stay calm.
Hemşireler sakin kalabilmeli.
4. to'dan sonra ve -ing halinde — to be able to, being able to
I want to be able to talk to my customers in English.
Müşterilerimle İngilizce konuşabilmek istiyorum.
Being able to drive makes life much easier.
Araba kullanabilmek hayatı çok kolaylaştırıyor.
Aynısı used to için de geçerli: My grandpa used to be able to walk for hours. (Eskiden yapabiliyordu — artık yapamıyor.)
3.Şimdiki zaman: can mi, am / is / are able to mu?
I can speak a little Japanese.
Biraz Japonca konuşabiliyorum. (günlük konuşmadaki söyleyiş)
Customers are able to change their booking online.
Müşteriler rezervasyonlarını internetten değiştirebilir. (duyuru / resmî)
After the operation, Grandpa is able to walk again.
Ameliyattan sonra dedem yeniden yürüyebiliyor. (vurgu: artık yapabiliyor)
4.Geçmiş zaman: could mi, was able to mu, managed to mu?
| Ne demek istiyorsun | Kullan | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Bir dönem boyunca genel yetenek (yapmayı biliyordun) | could ya da was / were able to | At ten, I could swim a kilometre. |
| Belirli bir şeyi tek bir seferde başarmak | was / were able to, managed to (could değil) | The road was flooded, but we were able to get home. |
| Başaramamak (iki durumda da) | couldn't ya da wasn't / weren't able to | I couldn't find a parking space. |
Minh could run really fast when he was a kid.
Minh çocukken çok hızlı koşabiliyordu. (genel yetenek)
Yesterday Minh managed to catch the last train.
Dün Minh son trene yetişmeyi başardı. (tek bir sefer; could catch değil)
It was a tough match, but we were able to win.
Zor bir maçtı ama kazanmayı başardık.
The box was heavy, but I managed to carry it upstairs.
Kutu ağırdı ama onu yukarı taşımayı başardım.
Managed to + yalın fiil, işin zor olduğunu ve çaba gerektirdiğini vurgular. Olumsuzu: didn't manage to (= couldn't).
İstisna: see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, remember ile could tek bir sefer için de kullanılabilir: When I opened the door, I could smell smoke.
Hızlı test: cümleye “in the end” (sonunda) ya da “on that day” (o gün) ekleyebiliyorsan, belirli tek bir seferden söz ediyorsun → was able to / managed to. “O zamanlar … yapmayı biliyordum” demek istiyorsan → could.
5.Sık yapılan hatalar
I able to swim.I'm able to swim.
Able bir sıfattır — be gerekir.
We weren't able find the hotel. We weren't able to find the hotel.
able'dan sonra her zaman to gelir.
I don't able to come.I'm not able to come.
Olumsuz hal don't ile değil, be + not ile yapılır.
I hope I can be able to visit you.I hope I'll be able to visit you.
can ile be able to'yu birlikte kullanma.
The bus was late, but I could arrive on time. The bus was late, but I managed to arrive on time.
Belirli tek bir sefer → could değil, managed to / was able to.

Perfect zaman: has been able to.
