Lektion 11 · Etappe 1: Die Grundlagen

„Be able to“

Anfänger

“Be able to”

Form & Gebrauch

be able to + Verb — Fähigkeit, in jeder Zeitform

1.Form

be able to + Grundform — etwas tun können, die Fähigkeit haben, etwas zu tun. Nur be verändert sich mit der Zeitform (am / is / are, was / were, will be, have been…); able to und das Verb danach bleiben gleich.

ZeitformBejahtVerneintFrage
GegenwartShe's able to walk again. She isn't able to walk.Is she able to walk?
VergangenheitWe were able to help.We weren't able to help. Were you able to help?
ZukunftI'll be able to come.I won't be able to come. Will you be able to come?
Present PerfectI've been able to save a bit.I haven't been able to sleep.Have you been able to rest?

Kurzantworten wiederholen be / will / have: Yes, I was. / No, I won't. / No, I haven't. I'm unable to attend the meeting.

Able ist ein Adjektiv (wie tired oder happy) und braucht deshalb immer be davor — genau wie bei I am tired. Lernende schreiben oft „I able to…“ oder „I don't able to…“. Richtig ist I'm able to… / I'm not able to…

2.Wann du be able to brauchst

Wie du in der Lektion „Fähigkeit mit ‚can / could‘“ gesehen hast, hat can nur zwei Formen: can und could. Überall sonst nimmst du be able to statt can.

1. Die Zukunft — will be able to / won't be able to

  • After this course, you'll be able to order food in English.

  • Sorry, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.

I can see you tomorrow at ten. Wenn die Fähigkeit aber noch nicht da ist und erst später kommt (nach einem Kurs, wenn es dir besser geht, sobald du ein Auto hast…), nimm will be able to.

2. Perfekt-Zeitformen — have / has been able to

  • I haven't been able to reach him all day.

  • Since she got glasses, she's been able to read the board clearly.

3. Nach einem anderen Modalverb — might / may / should / must + be able to (zwei Modalverben können nicht zusammen stehen)

  • Ask Minh — he might be able to fix it.

Frag Minh — vielleicht kann er es reparieren. (nicht: might can)

  • Nurses must be able to stay calm.

    Pflegekräfte müssen ruhig bleiben können.

4. Nach to und in der -ing-Form — to be able to, being able to

  • I want to be able to talk to my customers in English.

  • Being able to drive makes life much easier.

Dasselbe gilt für used to: My grandpa used to be able to walk for hours. (Früher konnte er das — heute nicht mehr.)

3.Gegenwart: can oder am / is / are able to?

  • I can speak a little Japanese.

Ich kann ein bisschen Japanisch. (so sagt man es im Alltag)

  • Customers are able to change their booking online.

Kunden können ihre Buchung online ändern. (Hinweis / förmlich)

  • After the operation, Grandpa is able to walk again.

Nach der Operation kann Opa wieder laufen. (Betonung: jetzt kann er es wieder)

4.Vergangenheit: could, was able to oder managed to?

Was du meinstWas du nimmstBeispiel
Allgemeine Fähigkeit über einen Zeitraum (du wusstest, wie es geht)could oder was / were able toAt ten, I could swim a kilometre.
Eine bestimmte Sache bei einer bestimmten Gelegenheit schaffenwas / were able to, managed to (nicht could)The road was flooded, but we were able to get home.
Etwas nicht schaffen (beide Fälle)couldn't oder wasn't / weren't able toI couldn't find a parking space.
  • Minh could run really fast when he was a kid.

Als Kind konnte Minh richtig schnell rennen. (allgemeine Fähigkeit)

  • Yesterday Minh managed to catch the last train.

  • It was a tough match, but we were able to win.

  • The box was heavy, but I managed to carry it upstairs.

Verneint: didn't manage to (= couldn't).

Ausnahme: Bei see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, remember passt could auch für eine einzelne Gelegenheit: When I opened the door, I could smell smoke.

Schnelltest: Wenn du „in the end“ oder „on that day“ in den Satz einfügen könntest, geht es um eine bestimmte Gelegenheit → was able to / managed to. Meinst du „damals wusste ich, wie…“ → could. Achtung: Im Deutschen sagst du in beiden Fällen „konnte“ — im Englischen nicht.

5.Typische Fehler

  • I able to swim.

    I'm able to swim.

Able ist ein Adjektiv — es braucht be.

  • We weren't able find the hotel.

We weren't able to find the hotel.

    Nach able kommt immer to.

  • I don't able to come.

    I'm not able to come.

Die Verneinung bildest du mit be + not, nicht mit don't.

  • I hope I can be able to visit you.

I hope I'll be able to visit you.

can und be able to nicht zusammen benutzen.

  • The bus was late, but I could arrive on time.

The bus was late, but I managed to arrive on time.

Eine bestimmte Gelegenheit → managed to / was able to, nicht could.

  • She has able to drive since last year.

She has been able to drive since last year.

Present Perfect: has been able to.
