“Be able to”

1.형태

be able to + 동사원형 — ~할 수 있다, ~할 능력이 있다. 시제에 따라 바뀌는 것은 be뿐입니다(am / is / are, was / were, will be, have been…). able to와 뒤에 오는 동사는 그대로입니다.

She's able to walk again. She isn't able to walk.Is she able to walk?
과거We were able to help.We weren't able to help. Were you able to help?
미래I'll be able to come.I won't be able to come. Will you be able to come?
I've been able to save a bit.I haven't been able to sleep.Have you been able to rest?

짧은 대답은 be / will / have를 다시 씁니다: Yes, I was. / No, I won't. / No, I haven't. 부정은 unable to로도 쓸 수 있습니다(조금 격식 있는 표현): I'm unable to attend the meeting.

학습자들이 “I able to…”나 “I don't able to…” I'm able to… / I'm not able to…

2.be able to가 필요한 경우

「“can / could” 능력」 레슨에서 보았듯이 can의 형태는 can과 could 두 가지뿐입니다. 그 밖의 경우에는 can 대신 be able to를 씁니다.

1. 미래 — will be able to / won't be able to

  • Sorry, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.

I can see you tomorrow at ten. 에는 will be able to를 씁니다.

2. 완료 시제 — have / has been able to

  • I haven't been able to reach him all day.

  • Since she got glasses, she's been able to read the board clearly.

3. 다른 조동사 뒤 — might / may / should / must + be able to(조동사 두 개를 나란히 쓸 수 없습니다)

  • Ask Minh — he might be able to fix it.

(might can은 틀림)

  • Nurses must be able to stay calm.

4. to 뒤와 -ing 형태 — to be able to, being able to

used to 뒤도 마찬가지입니다: My grandpa used to be able to walk for hours.

3.현재: can일까, am / is / are able to일까?

  • I can speak a little Japanese.

부정: didn't manage to(= couldn't).

예외: see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, remember와 함께라면 한 번의 일에도 could를 쓸 수 있습니다: When I opened the door, I could smell smoke.

간단한 확인법: 문장에 “in the end(결국)”나 “on that day(그날)”를 붙일 수 있으면 특정한 한 번의 일 → was able to / managed to.
