「be able to」
初級“Be able to”
時制によって変わるのは be の部分だけです(am / is / are, was / were, will be, have been…)。
|---|---|---|---|
She's able to walk again. | She isn't able to walk. | Is she able to walk? |
We were able to help. | We weren't able to help. | Were you able to help? |
I'll be able to come. | I won't be able to come. | Will you be able to come? |
I've been able to save a bit. | I haven't been able to sleep. | Have you been able to rest? |
答え方では be / will / have をくり返します:Yes, I was. / No, I won't. / No, I haven't. 否定は unable to でも表せます(少しかたい言い方):I'm unable to attend the meeting.
「I able to…」や「I don't able to…」 I'm able to… / I'm not able to… です。
2.be able to が必要なとき
レッスン『「can / could」の能力』で見たように、can の形は can と could の2つだけです。それ以外の場合は、can の代わりに be able to を使います。
1. 未来 — will be able to / won't be able to
After this course, you'll be able to order food in English.
Sorry, I won't be able to make it on Saturday.
I can see you tomorrow at ten. は will be able to を使います。
2. 完了形 — have / has been able to
I haven't been able to reach him all day.
Since she got glasses, she's been able to read the board clearly.
3. ほかの助動詞の後ろ — might / may / should / must + be able to(助動詞を2つ並べることはできません)
Ask Minh — he might be able to fix it.
(might can とは言わない)
Nurses must be able to stay calm.
4. to の後ろと -ing 形 — to be able to, being able to
I want to be able to talk to my customers in English.
Being able to drive makes life much easier.
My grandpa used to be able to walk for hours.(昔はできたけれど、今はもうできない。)
3.現在:can か、am / is / are able to か
am / is / are able to
I can speak a little Japanese.
Customers are able to change their booking online.
After the operation, Grandpa is able to walk again.
4.過去:could か、was able to か、managed to か
|---|---|---|
| ある期間の一般的な能力(やり方を知っていた) | could または was / were able to | At ten, I could swim a kilometre. |
| ある1回の場面で、特定のことに成功した | was / were able to, managed to(could は使わない) | The road was flooded, but we were able to get home. |
| できなかった(どちらの場合も) | couldn't または wasn't / weren't able to | I couldn't find a parking space. |
Minh could run really fast when he was a kid.
Yesterday Minh managed to catch the last train.
It was a tough match, but we were able to win.
The box was heavy, but I managed to carry it upstairs.
否定は didn't manage to(= couldn't)です。
例外:see, hear, smell, taste, feel, understand, remember といっしょなら、1回の場面でも could を使えます:When I opened the door, I could smell smoke.
簡単なチェック方法:文に「in the end(結局)」や「on that day(その日)」を加えられるなら、特定の1回の場面 → was able to / managed to。
I able to swim.I'm able to swim.
We weren't able find the hotel. We weren't able to find the hotel.
I don't able to come.I'm not able to come.
否定は don't ではなく、be + not で作ります。
I hope I can be able to visit you.I hope I'll be able to visit you.
can と be able to をいっしょに使わないでください。
The bus was late, but I could arrive on time. The bus was late, but I managed to arrive on time.
特定の1回の場面 → could ではなく managed to / was able to。
She has able to drive since last year. She has been able to drive since last year.
完了形:has been able to。
