1
Do you feel time moves faster when you get older?
2
I actually do feel that.
3
When I'm writing a journal, I unconsciously write down the year 2016.
4
I was like, oh my god, why is my memory still stuck there?
5
And every year when I have my birthday, I feel like I was a teenager not that long ago.
6
And my memories from my childhood and teenage years seem to be more vivid.
7
Now I'm more than 30 years old, I feel like time moves even faster.
8
Why does this happen?
9
One reason is that our perception of time changes as we get older.
10
When we are 10 years old, one year is just 10% of the life we've already lived.
11
And when you are 31 years old, like me, one year is just 3% of your life so far.
12
And another factor is that as you get older, your life becomes more stable and repetitive.
13
You enter the job market, you stay in the same position for several years, you get along with the same co-workers or friends, and you do the similar things over and over again.
14
So there's nothing new in your life.
15
But when you were a teenager, there are so many firsts.
16
You probably remember your first trip, your first day at a new school, your first birthday party, your first kiss,
17
and the first time experiences tend to leave more memories than the repetitive ones.
18
There have also been several moments in my life where I felt time really stopped.
19
I think that is related to the overloads of information and emotions.
20
You know, when you are experiencing very strong emotions like fear, nervousness, excitement, or happiness, time tends to slow down.
21
I still remember one experience I didn't expect it to happen at all.
22
I was in a very serious car accident.
23
I still remember the moment when I was sitting in a car and two trucks hit my car from the back.
24
and I remember how the windows were shattered.
25
So that also reminded me that when you go through extremely emotional and traumatic events,
26
your brain automatically flashes back to them vividly.
27
Anyway, our time perception and memories are related to the strengths of emotions that we experience at particular moments.
28
I'm not asking you to do anything extreme, but I'm saying that maybe sometimes you can bring some novelty into your life, Maybe take a new project,
29
find a new job, meet new people, and try new foods or try a new kind of coffee.
30
These little changes may make you feel like your life is not just one repetitive routine.
31
But it doesn't matter how many new experiences we create for ourselves, how exciting our life is, how wonderful the world is.
32
We all face the same dilemma.
33
We don't feel we have enough time for life.
34
This problem is often described as time poverty.
35
While modern society contributes to the problem, I think it has more to do with the nature of being human.
36
No matter where you live, where you come from, and how much money you have, we have to face the brutal fact, which is our life is finite.
37
I always remember a good point from the book, 4,000 Weeks.
38
As human beings, we are given the gift of creativity, imagination, and all kinds of capabilities.
39
But we also seem to have infinite ambitions, and our ambitions seem to always exceed the limits of time we we have omers.
40
So there's always a fundamental contradiction between our physical limits and our imagination.
41
And as intelligent creatures, we have to endure the pain of time limits.
42
So this reminded me of ancient Chinese wisdom.
43
爱无生之事,互相长江之无穷
44
It translates into we grieve over the brevity of our own lives while looking at the endless flow of the Yangtze River.
45
And the modern society makes this contradiction even stronger as it offers
46
so many opportunities and so many new things for us to try.
47
There's so many books I want to read, so many hobbies I want to develop, so many songs I want to sing, and so many new things I want to learn,
48
but there's simply not enough time for all of them.
49
Even now, I am very lucky to have a flexible job as an entrepreneur and content creator.
50
I still constantly feel that I don't have enough time for everything I want to do in my life.
51
You know, brainstorming, researching, writing books, creating videos, and creating courses, all of these things take a large amount of time.
52
If I spend more time on a productive work, I have less time for my personal hobbies like drawing, singing, playing the piano, etc. We have to admit
53
that time is one of few things that is fundamentally limited for every one of us.
54
I don't think the ultimate solution is to become more productive.
55
You will find that even if you are super productive, you will always have more tasks to complete.
56
You will always have more ambitious desires and things you want to do, and you still end up with a full to-do list.
57
So you can always maximize your productivity, but you will always hit a ceiling.
58
So we have to ask ourselves a more fundamental question.
59
How do we spend our limited time on earth on the things that really matter?
60
So sometimes we don't need addition, we need subtraction.
61
There's research suggesting that having two to five hours of discretionary time every day is associated with higher well-being.
62
If you are too busy, you will feel stressed out, anxious.
63
If you have too much free time, you will feel you lack a sense of purpose and you feel unmotivated.
64
So maybe give yourself some space in your day.
65
Give yourself two hours to do the things that are unrelated to your work.
66
Take a walk, walk your dog, draw, sing, meditate, anything you like.
67
We don't have eternal life, we are human beings.
68
Maybe we have to learn to accept the limits and work within them.
