Shadowing Practice: Why Don't Our Bones Keep Growing Forever? - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Fish, amphibians, and reptiles –actually, almost all vertebrates– get  bigger throughout their lives; they generally keep on growing until they die.
2
Then, there are humans, who, by the age of 20 or  so, just stop getting bigger… or at least taller.
3
Why do we stop growing partway through life?
4
Hi, I'm Cameron, and this is MinuteEarth.
5
We can think about the question of why humans stop growing –like a lot of other questions  about the world around us– in two ways.
6
Like, on an individual level, what actually stops our bones from  getting longer at some critical moment?
7
But then also, on a grander scale, why do humans stop growing at a certain  point, while other animals don’t?
8
Let's start with the first one.
9
Many bones have special layers of cells  on each end known as "growth plates"; these cells are constantly dividing  and turning into brand-new bone.
10
That's what makes both you  and, say, an alligator grow.
11
And for the alligator, that growth  continues throughout its life.
12
But in humans, once puberty is complete,  our bodies release hormones that harden our growth plates permanently, turning  them into "no-more-growth" plates.
13
Occasionally, some medical problem –like a hormone imbalance– will block this  normal process from happening; that’s how the tallest  people that have ever lived, like nine-foot-tall Robert Wadlow,  reach their towering heights.
14
But, assuming things work as they should, the hardening of your growth plates  means you can’t get any taller.
15
Now, here's where –if you're thinking what  I'm thinking– you're contemplating that bigger question of why this whole growth-stopping  process happens at all in us humans.
16
And it has to do with the fact that  humans –along with other mammals, and birds– are energy-hungry critters.
17
Our fast metabolisms allow us to  run –or swim or fly– long distances, but they require a lot of energy to  sustain, even when we’re at rest.
18
And burning all that energy  produces a lot of heat.
19
And if you recall, as an animal grows, its volume,  and therefore the amount of heat it produces, increases much faster than its surface area does  – surface that's needed to vent that heat outward.
20
Getting too big would burn us up, so it makes sense that there’s a biological  process that limits our growth.
21
But other vertebrates –like alligators– have much slower metabolisms that don’t  burn much energy most of the time.
22
Even as they grow bigger – and their  relative surface area decreases – they’re generally able to vent the limited  amount of heat their bodies produce.
23
And since being big does confer a lot of benefits, they might as well keep on  getting bigger throughout life.
24
Bigger might be better for us humans too.
25
After all, it would be nice to be  able to reach the highest fruit on the tree or change lightbulbs  without a ladder, or something.
26
Unfortunately, we just can't take the heat.
27
If there’s anything that won’t stop growing, it’s the ridiculous amount of browser  tabs I have open at any one time.
28
But that’s alright because I use Tab  for a Cause, a simple browser extension that lets users raise money for charity  for free just by opening browser tabs.
29
Right now, Tab For a Cause is  working with The Humane League to help end animal cruelty in factory farms.
30
Simply download Tab for a Cause  at the link in the description, and every tab you open will raise money that  will go toward improving the lives of animals.

Who Is This Video For?

This video is perfect for intermediate English learners focusing on english speaking practice and clear communication. The conversational tone and scientific topic make it ideal for practicing complex ideas in simple language—great for building fluency. Whether you’re using a shadowing app or the shadowing technique, the steady pace and natural pauses let you mimic pronunciation and rhythm effectively.

Words & Idioms Worth Stealing

The video uses standout phrases like "no-more-growth plates" (a playful term for hardened growth plates) and "confer a lot of benefits" (mean "give advantages"). "Take the heat" (handle stress or consequences) is a common idiom—note how it’s used metaphorically here. These expressions add color to your speech and are easy to practice with shadowspeak (repeating phrases aloud to match tone).

How to Get the Accent Right

Focus on the speaker’s clear vowel sounds, especially in words like "hormones" (HOR-mohnz) and "metabolisms" (meh-TAB-uh-liz-uhmz). Notice the stress on the second syllable in "critical" (KRIT-ih-kuhl) and "permanently" (PUR-muh-nuhnt-lee). Use the shadowing technique: pause after each sentence, repeat it, and match the rising intonation in questions like "Why do we stop growing partway through life?" This helps improve English pronunciation by training your mouth to form sounds naturally. For tricky terms, slow down—break "vertebrates" (VUR-tuh-brayts) into syllables. With consistent practice, you’ll master the rhythm and clarity of the speaker’s style. Practicing with this video using a shadowing app or just a notebook will boost your confidence in explaining complex ideas. Remember: shadowspeak isn’t just about repetition—it’s about capturing the energy and flow of natural speech. Keep at it, and you’ll see progress in no time!
