Mistakes that worked.
4
Have you ever made a mistake that actually turned out to be something good?
5
Believe it or not, a lot of things we use every day were simply accidents.
6
Here are two of these amazing stories.
7
Alexander Fleming, the Scottish scientist, was experimenting with bacteria in 1928.
8
Being a rather sloppy scientist, he used to leave his culture plates all around his lab and then forget about them.
9
One day after he returned from a vacation, he noticed that there was some mold on one of the bacteria samples, which had been left by an open window.
10
He took a closer look and saw that there was something around the mold.
11
This made him realize that the mold was able to destroy the harmful bacteria.
12
That's how he discovered penicillin.
13
Since then, his discovery has helped millions of people around the world recover from infections.
14
Percy LeBaron Spencer, a self-taught engineer, was visiting a lab in 1946.
15
As he stood in front of a magnetron, a power tube that drives a radar set,
16
he noticed the chocolate bar in his pocket had started to melt.
17
Spencer got curious.
18
He sent a boy out for some popcorn kernels.
19
When he held them near the magnetron, the popcorn exploded all over the lab.
20
The next morning he brought in a kettle, cut a hole in the side, and put an egg into the pot.
21
He then moved the magnetron against the hole and the egg burst.
22
Spencer realized that we can use microwave radio signals to cook with, and he developed the microwave in 1947.
